For prerecorded video sent to YouTube as a live broadcast, use YouTube’s live encoder settings for the outgoing feed—not its separate video-upload settings. You need a live encoder that plays the recording and sends it to YouTube over a live-ingestion connection. YouTube does not publish a separate encoding profile just for prerecorded live streams.

Which YouTube encoding settings apply?

A prerecorded video becomes a live stream when an encoder plays the file and sends its output to YouTube as a live feed. The settings that matter are therefore the settings of that outgoing feed: its codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format.

YouTube’s upload recommendations apply when you upload a video directly to YouTube. They are not a substitute for the live-encoder recommendations. For example, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for a standard-frame-rate 1080p upload, while its live H.264 recommendation for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps.

YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, at up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe every two seconds; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and requirements.

Recommended H.264 live bitrates

Choose the row matching the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. These are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingestion recommendations, not its direct-upload bitrates. The page does not state a publication year; check it for current guidance if exact limits are critical.

Output resolution and frame rate Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps 7 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 8 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps 11 Mbps
2160p60 50 Mbps 14 Mbps

The bitrate should match the encoder’s ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. These figures are for H.264; do not assume the same bitrate is right for a different codec. Allow network headroom above the selected bitrate: YouTube’s preparation guidance recommends about 20% additional upload bandwidth.

Other encoder settings to check

  • Rate control: Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where possible; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Picture format: Use square pixels and progressive scan.
  • H.264 profile details: YouTube’s encoder recommendations specify two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
  • SDR color: Use Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR.
  • HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S), and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. HLS may be an alternative for relevant codec or HDR cases; it is a distinct workflow with different requirements.
  • Audio: For RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC or MP3; use AAC if sending 5.1 surround audio.

For the full codec-specific recommendations, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings page.

How to send a prerecorded video as a YouTube live stream

  1. Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. A person must be at least 16 to livestream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until broadcast day. Check YouTube Studio for your account’s current eligibility and status. YouTube’s live-streaming start guidance.
  2. Create or schedule a live event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Scheduling can help promote the event and lets viewers set reminders, but it does not send the video by itself: the encoder still needs to connect and provide the feed at the event time. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Choose an encoder that can play the recording. Use software or a hardware encoder that can feed the prerecorded file into a live output. YouTube supports both; dedicated hardware is optional, not a prerequisite. Confirm that the tool can keep playback running for the duration you need and can send the selected codec and settings.
  4. Copy the connection details into the encoder. In the Live Control Room, find the server URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s live-stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast on your channel.
  5. Set the output format and bitrate. Match the encoder output to your chosen resolution and frame rate, then select the corresponding YouTube live bitrate for the codec. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS. Check that your available outbound upload capacity can sustain the stream with headroom.
  6. Preview and test before the event. Start the encoder, inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room, and check both picture and audio. YouTube recommends setting up in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Its guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube’s stream preparation tips.
  7. Go live and monitor stream health. When the preview is correct, start the event in Live Control Room as appropriate for the scheduled stream. Watch the health messages and verify that playback continues, audio is present, and the stream remains connected.

When HLS is different from the standard RTMP workflow

HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion method, not another name for RTMP. YouTube documents it for HDR or codecs that are not supported by RTMP. It requires a compatible encoder and a different delivery format: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte range. HLS also has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed. Do not apply these segment rules to a standard RTMP/RTMPS stream. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Copyright, archives, and live-stream checks

Confirm you have the rights to the recording

Using a prerecorded file does not make its contents exempt from YouTube’s rules. Make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music, images, and other material in the recording, and review YouTube’s applicable policies before scheduling. A successful encoder preview confirms the feed is reaching YouTube; it does not establish that the content is cleared for broadcast.

Keep a separate recording backup

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that archive as your only copy. Keep the source file and any separate recording you need independently. YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No incoming preview The encoder has not started, or its connection details are wrong. Confirm the encoder is sending, then recheck the server URL and stream key in the Live Control Room. Do not expose the key publicly.
Buffering or unstable stream Available upload bandwidth is too close to the stream bitrate or fluctuates. Check sustained outbound capacity, preserve about 20% headroom, and lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed.
Picture quality is poor or the stream drops frames The encoder output may not match the selected bitrate or the available connection. Verify resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together against the matching live-ingestion recommendation; test before the event.
Audio is missing or incompatible The encoder’s audio format or channel configuration may not be supported for the chosen ingestion path. For RTMP/RTMPS, try AAC or MP3; for 5.1 surround, use AAC. Check the encoder preview and audio meters before going live.
HDR or codec does not work over RTMP(S) The selected codec or HDR mode may not be supported through that ingestion path. Review YouTube’s current codec guidance; H.265 is recommended for HDR over RTMP(S), AV1 is not supported for HDR, and HLS may apply to relevant cases.
The event is scheduled but no video appears A scheduled event does not itself provide the live feed. Start the encoder at the event time and confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast.
First stream cannot be activated immediately Initial live-streaming activation may still be processing. Enable the feature well in advance; YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
