If OBS says “YouTube server disconnected,” first check whether OBS is actually losing its connection to YouTube’s ingest server: watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. Rising dropped frames or a yellow/red indicator points toward an unstable network route or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Then check bitrate, ingest-server selection, your local network and interfering software, and the YouTube stream key and URL. The message alone does not identify the cause.
What “YouTube server disconnected” means in OBS
Here, “server” means YouTube’s ingest server—the endpoint receiving the video feed—not a server operated by OBS Project. OBS says the stream connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service; it does not pass through OBS Project servers (OBS Help).
A disconnect can involve the route from your computer to YouTube, upload capacity, a selected ingest server, local network or ISP conditions, VPN or security software, or an incorrect stream key or URL. Without an OBS log, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and details of your network and encoder setup, the error cannot identify which one is responsible.
Fix it in this order
-
Read OBS’s connection indicators
During a failure, note the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. If dropped frames rise while the indicator turns yellow or red, investigate the network path and sustainable bitrate first. OBS says dropped frames of this kind are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. If the counter does not rise, continue through the stream-configuration checks below rather than assuming this is a bandwidth problem (OBS connection troubleshooting).

Reduce bitrate to a sustainable level
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS’s general troubleshooting guide suggests beginning at 75% of total upload speed as a diagnostic starting point. This is not a guarantee: upload capacity can vary, and YouTube has recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
For context, YouTube’s encoder settings page, checked 2026-10-03, recommends H.264 video bitrates of 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that bitrate caused your disconnect. Check the current table for your actual output mode and codec before choosing a target (YouTube encoder settings).

YouTube’s page also lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. These settings help match the encoder to YouTube’s requirements, but changing them will not repair an unstable route by itself.

Try another ingest server if OBS offers one
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and try a different server if the service or encoder exposes that choice. This tests whether a particular route works better; it does not establish that the original server was down globally. OBS’s troubleshooting guide also describes bind-to-IP and, in appropriate cases, IPv4-only tests. These options are platform- and setup-dependent, so do not treat them as universal menu steps (OBS connection troubleshooting).

Isolate local-network and software interference
If possible, test a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi to see whether the local wireless link is involved. OBS also identifies VPNs and security software, including firewalls, as possible sources of interference. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the result changes.
If you suspect a VPN or security product, temporarily disable the suspected software only for a controlled test. Restore protection afterward. If the test supports a firewall conflict, add a narrow exception for OBS and re-enable protection. A wired test or software change cannot fix an ISP routing fault, an incorrect key, or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.

Verify the YouTube stream and credentials
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that you have the intended stream selected and copy its current stream key into OBS. Treat the key as a password. If it may have been exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it and update the encoder (YouTube stream settings).
If you use RTMPS, confirm that the server URL is the RTMPS endpoint and that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube also provides port-443 guidance for some SSL errors (YouTube RTMPS guide).

Test and monitor before the next broadcast
Before a scheduled documentary premiere or other broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and broadcast. If the connection still fails after checking the encoder and local setup, OBS’s guide recommends contacting your internet service provider. Keep the OBS log and YouTube messages available when you ask for help; they can make diagnosis more specific (YouTube encoder settings).
How to narrow down the cause
| What you observe | What to investigate first | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames rise and the indicator turns yellow or red | Network route or bitrate beyond stable upload capacity | Lower bitrate, then compare with YouTube’s recommendations for your codec and output mode. |
| The connection improves after choosing another server | A route-specific difference | Test and monitor the new selection; do not infer a global server outage. |
| The connection improves on Ethernet or after a controlled VPN/security-software test | Local Wi-Fi or software interference may be involved | Change one variable at a time; restore protection and use a narrow OBS exception only if the test supports it. |
| YouTube does not receive the intended stream, or the URL uses the wrong protocol | Stream selection, key, or RTMPS configuration | Copy the current key from YouTube Studio and verify the endpoint and encoder support. |
These are diagnostic clues, not definitive root-cause findings. A changed result after one test points to a direction for further checking; it does not prove the wider service was at fault.
What not to assume
- A yellow/red indicator or rising dropped-frames counter does not by itself identify your ISP, Wi-Fi, VPN, security software, or YouTube as the cause.
- Reinstalling OBS, changing DNS, or buying hardware is not established as a general fix for this message.
- Dynamic bitrate adjustment, which OBS describes as a beta option, may lower quality during a connection problem; it does not resolve the underlying network issue.
- Do not leave security protection disabled after a test. Re-enable it and make only a narrow exception if evidence supports that change.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded documentary or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option from troubleshooting an OBS broadcast. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
