OBS portable mode can keep a dedicated Windows OBS setup—its profiles and scene collections—separate from your everyday OBS configuration. It does not make OBS a 24/7 reliability system: it will not keep a computer powered on, supervise the stream, or automatically recover if YouTube disconnects it. For an isolated DIY setup, use a separate portable folder plus a dedicated profile and scene collection, then test the launch behavior with your installed OBS version.
What portable mode separates—and what it does not
OBS portable mode stores its configuration beside the application. A separate extracted OBS folder can therefore have its own profiles and scene collections, without mixing those settings with another OBS installation. The OBS Project documents portable mode for Windows and says it is unsupported on macOS and Linux. OBS: Running in Portable Mode
Portable mode does not bundle the media files referenced by your scenes. As the OBS Project guide puts it: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” If you move the folder, update the scene collection’s paths or use a common path available from both locations.
Set up a separate portable OBS folder on Windows
- Download the Windows ZIP package from OBS and extract it to a folder you can access, such as a folder under your user directory. The portable-mode guide advises against extracting it to Program Files. See the OBS portable-mode guide.
- Enable portable mode. In the application root—the folder containing OBS’s application files—create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, launchbin/64bit/obs64.exewith the--portableswitch. - Start OBS from that folder and create or select the configuration you want for the continuing stream. Keep this folder distinct from any other OBS folder you use.
- Check media paths. Add the images, video and audio sources your scenes need, then verify they resolve from this folder and on the computer where the stream will run. Portable mode does not copy those files for you.
Pair a profile with a scene collection
A separate setup needs both pieces, because they store different things. OBS profiles save most settings related to output, including Stream, Video and Output settings; profiles do not save scenes. OBS: Profiles

Scene collections save scenes and sources, including global audio sources, but do not save output settings. OBS: Scene Collections
- Use a dedicated profile for this stream’s connected account or stream settings, video settings and output settings.
- Use a dedicated scene collection for the stream’s scenes, media and other sources.
- Maintain them as a pair. Selecting the right profile does not select the right scenes, and vice versa.
Launch a chosen profile and collection
OBS documents command-line switches for portable mode, profile selection, scene-collection selection and starting a stream. A Windows example is:

Replace the executable path and quoted names with your actual folder, profile and collection names. The switches are documented on the OBS Launch Parameters page. The command requests that OBS start streaming; it does not provide a watchdog, restart OBS after a crash, or guarantee that a YouTube stream stays connected.

Verify before unattended use
Test the exact command with the OBS version installed on the streaming computer. Confirm that the intended profile and collection are visibly active before allowing the stream to start. A Windows user report opened September 23, 2026 describes OBS 32.2.2 portable mode retaining the previously active profile and collection despite the switches. That is a version-specific report, not confirmation of a general OBS defect, so treat the command as something to validate rather than assume. Read the OBS forum report.
What this setup does—and does not—solve for 24/7 streaming
Portable mode is a way to isolate configuration. A continuous DIY stream still depends on the computer and its power, OBS staying open, the network connection, and the stream remaining connected to YouTube. The documented launch switches do not add automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Plan for those operational dependencies separately; do not mistake a separate configuration for uptime protection.
