Start by checking the playlist source and whether the blank appears in OBS’s preview at a file boundary. If it persists, prepare the clips as one continuous video and test that file before going live; this avoids separate file handoffs, but is a practical workaround—not a guaranteed fix.
Check which OBS source is playing the files
OBS’s built-in Media Source supports MP4 files, while its VLC Video source can play a list of media files. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; OBS’s guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- In OBS, select the scene that plays the clips and inspect the Sources list.
- If the clips are meant to play as a playlist, confirm that the source is VLC Video rather than assuming a single Media Source will manage a playlist.
- If VLC Video is unavailable, install the VLC version matching OBS’s architecture, then reopen OBS and check the source again.
OBS describes VLC Video as allowing a playlist “similar to an Image Slideshow.” That confirms playlist support, not seamless transitions.
Check playlist order, looping and source visibility
In the VLC Video source’s properties, confirm that the intended files are present and in the intended order. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; verify these if the sequence or restart behavior seems wrong.

Also check whether a scene change or source visibility change coincides with the blank. OBS documents that playback can stop when a source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. That behavior may matter if the playlist source is hidden and shown around a transition; it does not establish that every file handoff creates a black frame.
Find out whether the blank comes from a file handoff
- Watch the OBS preview or output while the playlist runs. Note whether the black segment occurs exactly as one file ends and the next begins.
- Inspect the end of the outgoing clip and the beginning of the incoming clip. A black frame already present in either file will remain black regardless of playlist settings.
- If the OBS preview is clean but viewers report a black gap on YouTube, compare the YouTube playback with OBS’s output. YouTube’s encoder stream key, URL and latency controls concern delivery and viewer playback; the cited YouTube live-stream settings guide does not describe a setting for removing a local OBS source transition.
Try one continuous video for persistent handoff gaps
Combine the clips into a single continuous video before the stream, then play that file as one source. This removes the separate file boundaries from the playback sequence, so OBS does not have to hand off between playlist items. OBS notes that an inactive Media Source can briefly show nothing while it reloads; avoiding separate file loads is a reasonable workaround when transitions are the problem.

The OBS documentation does not guarantee that a combined file will eliminate every black frame. Check the combined video itself for unwanted black frames, confirm it plays correctly in OBS, and preview the stream output before going live. Troubleshoot common cases
- The VLC Video source is missing: VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. OBS’s guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Source.
- The clips play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly: Check the list order and verify Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents looping on and shuffling off by default. Source.
- The blank appears when a scene changes: Check whether the playlist source becomes hidden and visible. OBS documents stop-and-restart behavior for source visibility changes. Source.
- The black frame is inside one clip: Inspect the relevant clip’s start and end frames. A playlist setting cannot remove black video that is part of the media itself.
- OBS preview is clean, but YouTube playback is not: Compare the OBS output with the YouTube playback and review YouTube’s stream settings, including latency. The cited guide does not establish a YouTube control for local file transitions. YouTube Help.
- A plugin seems to continue playback but gaps remain: Check that the installed plugin version supports your OBS version and review its release notes. Documented fixes are not a promise that every transition will be seamless. Plugin update notes.
