For a local OBS setup, use VLC Video to loop a playlist and Advanced Scene Switcher to automate timed or state-based actions. Those tools can automate playback and scene changes, but they do not make a computer, network connection, or OBS crash-proof. YouTube Studio scheduling also does not start OBS by itself: the encoder still has to connect, and YouTube’s scheduled workflow includes a manual Go live step.
What OBS can automate—and what it cannot
OBS can play prerecorded media, repeat a playlist, and run actions when specified conditions are met. VLC Video is the built-in OBS source intended for playlists; Advanced Scene Switcher adds condition-and-action macros for tasks such as changing scenes or responding to a timer. These are separate functions, so combine them only if your workflow needs both.
Neither plugin guarantees unattended uptime. A local setup still depends on the computer staying powered on, OBS continuing to run, and the internet connection remaining available. The cited plugin and YouTube materials describe features and setup workflows, not long-duration reliability tests.
Prepare OBS and YouTube
Check versions and prerequisites
- Advanced Scene Switcher’s OBS resource lists version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, and a minimum requirement of OBS Studio 31.1.1. Check the current release notes and your installed OBS version before installing because compatibility can change. Advanced Scene Switcher resource

- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a broadcast and use the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder workflow. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream. Choose an output you can sustain
Set OBS’s video and output settings to match the quality you intend to send and the upload capacity available at the streaming location. The sources cited here do not provide a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe recipe for every channel and connection, so do not treat a single setting as suitable for all streams. Confirm the current YouTube encoder recommendations and validate the result in Live Control Room before relying on an unattended schedule.

Build a repeating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS, then open OBS and select the scene where the video should appear.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist in the order you want them played. Use the available playlist controls to choose ordered playback or shuffle, and enable looping so playback repeats.
- Position and size the source in the scene. Preview playback and confirm that the files advance and the playlist returns to the beginning as expected.

Test the actual files and transitions before going live: the documentation establishes the controls, not that every media format or file in a particular collection will behave as intended.
Automate scenes and actions with Advanced Scene Switcher
Advanced Scene Switcher automates tasks through macros made of conditions and actions. Its resource lists timer, streaming, source, and scene-related conditions. It is an automation layer, not a video playlist, and it does not independently keep OBS or the computer running.

- Verify your OBS version meets the plugin’s current minimum, then install a compatible release using the plugin’s current instructions. Restart OBS if the installation instructions require it.
- Open the plugin’s Advanced Scene Switcher window and create a macro for the task you want to automate.
- Select a condition appropriate to the trigger—for example, a timer or a streaming, source, or scene state—and add the action the macro should perform.
- Enable the macro and test it in a non-live session. Confirm both the trigger and the resulting action before depending on it during a broadcast.

Connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast.
- Copy the broadcast’s YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming service settings. Keep the key private.
- Start streaming from OBS so the encoder connects to YouTube, then check the preview and status in the Live Control Room.
- For a scheduled broadcast, follow YouTube’s workflow and select Go live when the preview is ready. Scheduling a broadcast in Studio is not documented as scheduling OBS to launch or as an unattended encoder-start command.

Plan for archives and interruptions
Know the archive limit
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a stream longer than that will produce one complete automatic archive; check YouTube’s current guidance if preserving the full program as a VOD matters. YouTube encoder help

Design for local failure points
With OBS on a local computer, a power loss, computer restart, OBS failure, or internet outage can interrupt the encoder. The cited sources do not establish automatic recovery for a particular OBS setup. Test how your own system behaves after a controlled interruption, and have a way to restart OBS and reconnect the encoder if continuous availability matters.
Alternatives when OBS is not the right fit
For a local OBS workflow, VLC Video handles repeating playlists and Advanced Scene Switcher handles condition-based automation. If the requirement is to run prerecorded video without keeping a computer on, YouTube identifies these alternatives:

Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is missing or will not load: install VLC separately and make sure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and check the source again. OBS VLC Video documentation
- The playlist does not repeat: check the VLC Video source’s loop setting and test the end-of-playlist transition in preview.
- A macro does not fire: confirm the macro is enabled, its condition is being met, and its action targets the intended scene or source. Test outside a live broadcast, then check plugin and OBS compatibility.
- YouTube shows no incoming preview: verify OBS is streaming, the selected server URL and stream key match the intended broadcast, and Live Control Room reports an incoming encoder connection. Keep the stream key private.
- The scheduled broadcast is not live: a scheduled listing does not itself start OBS. Connect the encoder and follow the Live Control Room preview and Go live steps in YouTube’s workflow. YouTube encoder help
- The stream stops after a computer or network problem: local OBS depends on that machine and connection, and the cited materials do not promise crash or outage recovery. Restore power or connectivity, restart or reconnect OBS, and check the Live Control Room before assuming the broadcast resumed.

Keep prerecorded content eligible for live streaming
Automation does not change YouTube’s content rules. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before putting a long-running program on air. A playlist’s technical ability to loop does not establish that its contents comply with those rules or that it will qualify for monetization.
