Hints for Connections #975
Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The categories become progressively less obvious: yellow is usually the most accessible, followed by green, blue, and purple. You can make up to four incorrect guesses.
- Yellow: Events where objects or exhibits may be displayed or sold.
- Green: Words whose spellings represent spoken letter initialisms.
- Blue: Features commonly associated with DVD releases.
- Purple: Words beginning with parts of a wheel.
One answer from each group
These four words can help confirm the intended connections without revealing the entire board:
#1 Best Overall
- FAIR belongs with events where items or exhibits are displayed or sold.
- EMCEE sounds like the initials “M.C.”
- OUTTAKES are a familiar type of DVD extra.
- RIMSHOT begins with “rim,” a part of a wheel.
Answers for NYT Connections #975
The four categories are: EXHIBITION, WORDS SPELLING OUT INITIALISMS, DVD BONUS FEATURES, and STARTING WITH PARTS OF A WHEEL.
Yellow: EXHIBITION
CONVENTION, EXPOSITION, FAIR, SHOW
Each of these words can describe an event at which products, artwork, vehicles, objects, or other exhibits are presented, displayed, or sold. A convention or exposition may also be a large gathering organized around a particular subject or industry.
Rank #2
Green: WORDS SPELLING OUT INITIALISMS
DEEJAY, EMCEE, KAYO, OKAY
This group depends on pronunciation rather than meaning. Each word is a phonetic spelling of letters:
- DEEJAY sounds like “D.J.,” short for disc jockey.
- EMCEE sounds like “M.C.,” short for master of ceremonies.
- KAYO sounds like “K.O.,” meaning knockout.
- OKAY sounds like “O.K.,” meaning acceptable or satisfactory.
Blue: DVD BONUS FEATURES
COMMENTARY, INTERVIEW, OUTTAKES, TRAILER
These are supplementary materials commonly associated with DVD releases. A disc might include creator or audio commentary, an interview with cast or filmmakers, humorous or deleted outtakes, and a promotional trailer. The category is specifically about DVD bonus features, rather than movie extras in general.

Rank #3
Purple: STARTING WITH PARTS OF A WHEEL
HUBBUB, RIMSHOT, SPOKESPERSON, TIRESOME
The connection is hidden at the beginning of each word. Remove the remainder and the wheel-related starts become visible:
- HUB + bub = HUBBUB
- RIM + shot = RIMSHOT
- SPOKE + sperson = SPOKESPERSON
- TIRE + some = TIRESOME
This is the trickiest group because the complete words have unrelated meanings; the category relies only on their prefixes or beginnings.

How to approach a difficult Connections board
- Look for an unmistakable group of four. On this board, the event words—CONVENTION, EXPOSITION, FAIR, and SHOW—provide the most direct starting point.
- Watch for words that sound like letters. DEEJAY, EMCEE, KAYO, and OKAY look like ordinary words but represent D.J., M.C., K.O., and O.K. when spoken.
- Separate broad media terms carefully. COMMENTARY, INTERVIEW, OUTTAKES, and TRAILER fit the narrower DVD-bonus-feature category, while other words might tempt you toward a broader “film” or “television” group.
- Inspect the first few letters of the leftovers. HUB, RIM, SPOKE, and TIRE reveal the purple category once the other groups have been removed.
- Use elimination strategically. The game allows four mistakes, but a word can appear to fit multiple themes. Confirm all four members before submitting a guess whenever possible.
