NYT Connections answers for October 27, 2025
Yellow: EMANATE
BRANCH, FAN, RADIATE, SPREAD
These words can describe something extending, issuing, or moving outward from a central point or source. Something can emanate from a source, a tree can branch outward, a fan can spread or radiate from a center, and something can spread away from its origin.
This group is deliberately slippery because BRANCH, FAN, and SPREAD can all suggest outward movement in different contexts.
Rank #2
Green: IN THE SLIGHTEST
JUST, MERELY, ONLY, SIMPLY
Each word can express a minimal degree, limitation, or small qualification. For example, “just a little,” “merely an example,” “only one,” and “simply the minimum” all point toward the idea of something slight or limited.

CHERRY, MINT, OLIVE, TWIST
A cherry, sprig of mint, olive, or citrus twist can be used as a cocktail garnish or drink embellishment. This is the most concrete group in the puzzle and is a useful place to start solving.
Purple: ___ FOUR
CONNECT, FAB, FANTASTIC, PETIT
Each word forms a familiar phrase or title when paired with Four:
Rank #3
- Only Connect — the title of a quiz show.
- Fab Four — a familiar term for The Beatles.
- Fantastic Four — the Marvel superhero team.
- Petit Four — a small French confection.
The purple category is the trickiest because it is not based on a shared definition. Instead, the four words complete recognizable expressions when combined with “Four.”
How to solve this puzzle efficiently
- Identify the obvious drink-related words. CHERRY, MINT, OLIVE, and TWIST make a strong set of cocktail garnishes.
- Look for words that indicate a small amount or limited degree. JUST, MERELY, ONLY, and SIMPLY have closely related limiting meanings.
- Group the outward-motion words. BRANCH, FAN, RADIATE, and SPREAD can all describe movement or extension from a central point.
- Inspect the remaining four tiles. CONNECT, FAB, FANTASTIC, and PETIT each pair with “Four,” producing the purple category.
This order is a solving strategy inferred from the confirmed groupings, not an official ranking of the puzzle’s difficulty. One contemporary puzzle guide described this edition as hard and reported that its writer made one mistake, but that was an individual reaction rather than an official New York Times difficulty score.

Why the October 27 puzzle was challenging
The puzzle’s main difficulty came from overlapping possible interpretations. BRANCH can refer to a division extending from a main structure, while FAN and SPREAD can also describe things widening outward. Those associations can make the yellow group look less certain until the cocktail-garnish and minimal-degree groups have been removed.
Rank #4
The purple group uses a different mechanism altogether. Rather than matching meanings, it asks players to complete familiar names, titles, and phrases with “Four.” That makes PETIT especially important: once “Petit Four” is recognized as a confection, the remaining words point toward the same phrase-completion pattern.
