Spoiler warning: This guide gives progressively stronger hints and then the full answers for NYT Connections #646, published on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
The 16 words in this puzzle included several misleading overlaps. DIE could belong to more than one apparent group, while LICE looked like it might fit with the animal plurals. The key is to separate animals whose singular and plural spellings stay the same from irregular plurals that change completely.
Hints for NYT Connections #646
Try these clues before reading the solution. They identify the four categories without immediately listing every word.
| Color | Hint |
|---|---|
| Yellow | Something exceptional or one of a kind |
| Green | Words from another language that English speakers commonly recognize |
| Blue | Animals whose singular and plural forms are spelled the same |
| Purple | Plurals with notably different singular forms |
How to solve this Connections puzzle
- Begin with the synonym group. REMARKABLE, SINGULAR, SPECIAL and UNIQUE all describe something unusual, outstanding or exceptional. That gives you the yellow group.
- Watch the word DIE. It can be an English verb, the singular form of DICE, or a German definite article. In this puzzle, it belongs with the German words, not with DICE.
- Look for unchanged animal plurals. DEER, SHEEP, SHRIMP and SQUID can each refer to one animal or multiple animals without changing their spelling.
- Use the remaining irregular plurals. DICE, LICE, MICE and OXEN have singular forms that are substantially different: die, louse, mouse and ox.
NYT Connections #646 answers
Yellow: EXCEPTIONAL
- REMARKABLE
- SINGULAR
- SPECIAL
- UNIQUE
Each of these words can describe something unusual, outstanding or one of a kind. SINGULAR is particularly useful as a decoy because it also relates conceptually to singular and plural forms, a theme used elsewhere in the puzzle.

Green: GERMAN WORDS
- ANGST
- DIE
- KINDER
- WURST
These are German words that are also familiar to English speakers. Angst means fear or anxiety, die is a German definite article, Kinder means children, and Wurst means sausage.
Blue: PLURAL ANIMALS IDENTICAL TO THEIR SINGULAR FORMS
- DEER
- SHEEP
- SHRIMP
- SQUID
The spelling does not change when the quantity changes: you can say “one deer” and “two deer,” or “one sheep” and “two sheep.” SHRIMP and SQUID work the same way in this category.

- Gel pen with no smear, no bleed technology
- Intensely bold gel ink colors offer always vivid writing
- Contoured rubber grip for a comfortable writing experience
- Perfect for home, office, and school
Purple: PLURAL WORDS WITH VERY DIFFERENT SINGULAR FORMS
- DICE
- LICE
- MICE
- OXEN
The singular forms are die, louse, mouse and ox. This is the puzzle’s most deceptive group because DIE appears elsewhere as a German word, and LICE may initially seem to belong with the animal group.
