NYT Connections #644 was published on Sunday, March 16, 2025. The full solution is below, including graduated hints, the 16-word grid, all four categories, and explanations of the puzzle’s trickiest overlaps.
Spoiler warning: The answers appear farther down the page. If you are still solving, start with the light hints and stop before the answer section.
Light hints for Connections #644
Connections asks you to divide 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are commonly arranged by approximate difficulty: yellow is usually the most accessible, followed by green and blue, while purple is often the most deceptive.
For this puzzle, the hints progress from broadest to strongest:
#1 Best Overall
- Yellow: Think of a bunch, gathering, or assemblage.
- Green: These words end with a letter whose final sound disappears when you pronounce them.
- Blue: These are titles associated with films about serial killers.
- Purple: Look for words that begin with the names—or shortened names—of constellations.
The most important warning is that CONSTELLATION is a decoy. It looks as though it belongs with the hidden-constellation answers, but it is actually part of the broad yellow group.

Answers for NYT Connections #644
Spoilers begin here.
Yellow: BUNCH
CLUSTER, COLLECTION, CONSTELLATION, GROUP
All four words can describe an assemblage or bunch of things. A cluster is a group gathered closely together; a collection is an assortment; and a group is a set of people or things. A constellation can also mean an arrangement or collection of related things, in addition to its astronomical meaning.
Why it is a trap: CONSTELLATION strongly points toward astronomy, but the puzzle uses it here. The purple group does not contain the word CONSTELLATION at all; instead, its entries hide constellation names at their beginnings.

BALLET, DEBUT, RAPPORT, TAROT
This is a pronunciation-based group rather than a meaning-based group. In standard English pronunciations, the final t is not pronounced in each word:
- ballet — the final sound is “lay,” not a pronounced final t.
- debut — the word ends with the sound “boo.”
- rapport — the final sound is generally “por” or “pore,” without a final t.
- tarot — the final t is not sounded in common English pronunciations.
Reading the remaining words aloud is the quickest way to find this category. The label refers to the final letter’s sound, not merely to the spelling pattern.
Rank #3
Blue: SERIAL KILLER MOVIES
MONSTER, PSYCHO, SEVEN, ZODIAC
These are film titles connected with serial-killer stories or investigations:
- Monster is the title of the 2003 crime drama about serial killer Aileen Wuornos.
- Psycho is Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 thriller centered on Norman Bates.
- Seven—also styled Se7en—is the 1995 crime thriller about a murderer whose crimes follow the seven deadly sins.
- Zodiac is the 2007 David Fincher film about the investigation into the Zodiac Killer.
MONSTER is the least immediately distinctive entry because it is also an ordinary descriptive word. PSYCHO, SEVEN, and ZODIAC make the movie-title connection easier to recognize.
Purple: STARTING WITH CONSTELLATIONS
DRACONIAN, HYDRANT, LEONARDO, LIBRARY
Each word begins with the name of an official constellation, sometimes using a shortened constellation name:
Rank #4
- DRACONIAN begins with Draco.
- HYDRANT begins with Hydra.
- LEONARDO begins with Leo.
- LIBRARY begins with Libra.
The full words are not constellations. The category depends on their opening letters: Draco + nian, Hydra + nt, Leo + nardo, and Libra + ry.
How to solve the puzzle’s main traps
- Start with the conspicuous pronunciation group. BALLET, DEBUT, RAPPORT, and TAROT have an unusual feature in common when spoken: their final written t is silent.
- Recognize the film titles. PSYCHO, SEVEN, and ZODIAC are strong signals. MONSTER completes the movie group.
- Do not immediately remove CONSTELLATION as an astronomy answer. It is needed for the yellow BUNCH category.
- Inspect the leftover beginnings. DRACONIAN, HYDRANT, LEONARDO, and LIBRARY reveal Draco, Hydra, Leo, and Libra.
This order is useful because the yellow category is deliberately broad. If you take CONSTELLATION out too early, the final four words may not make sense.
