Every Christmas Eve, a North American military command turns radar, satellites and fighter aircraft into the cast of a Santa-tracking story. The tradition began with a mistaken phone call to an air-defense center in 1955; today, NORAD presents Santa’s journey through a website, apps, social media and a volunteer hotline. The technology behind the story is real. The public-facing sleigh track is not evidence of military sensors detecting Santa.
A wrong number reached the wrong command
According to NORAD’s official account, a department-store newspaper advertisement in 1955 invited children to call Santa, but the number directed callers to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) operations center in Colorado Springs. Colonel Harry Shoup answered and had staff respond with Santa’s supposed location. The calls became a tradition. The first calls went to CONAD—not NORAD, which did not yet exist. When the binational North American Aerospace Defense Command was formed in 1958, it carried the custom forward.
Popular retellings often describe the advertisement as a Sears ad with a misprinted number. NORAD’s account supports the broad story of an advertisement and an accidental connection, but the exact ad and details of the error should be treated as part of the institution’s repeated origin story, not as independently established here.

NORAD is a U.S.–Canada binational command responsible for aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning for North America. Its ordinary work is serious surveillance and defense. The Santa mission is a seasonal public-outreach tradition layered onto that structure—not a separate defense task or evidence that the command treats Santa as a threat.

The mistaken call gave operators a chance to reassure and entertain children. It is tempting to say the tradition began as a deliberately designed Cold War public-information campaign, but NORAD’s published history emphasizes the accidental calls and the custom that followed. Over time, the event became a conspicuous form of community engagement: NORAD describes it as one of the Department of Defense’s major outreach programs, with visitors to its site from more than 200 countries and territories.
Radar, satellites and Rudolph’s nose: the technology in the story
NORAD says its Santa narrative uses the same broad categories of systems associated with aerospace defense—radar, satellites and military aircraft. That does not mean the public map is a window into operational command systems, or that actual sensor records of a sleigh have been released. The distinction is between real capabilities and a playful explanation built around them.

Radar and the North Warning System
Radar sends radio signals and receives their reflections to help detect and track objects. NORAD’s holiday explanation begins with the North Warning System, a radar network across Alaska and northern Canada. A Department of Defense feature describes the system as having 47 installations and says the Christmas narrative has radar detect Santa departing the North Pole.

Infrared satellites and Rudolph
NORAD’s holiday account says satellites use infrared sensors to follow Santa, with Rudolph’s bright red nose serving as the distinctive beacon. The underlying capability is real: infrared sensing can detect heat signatures, including those associated with rocket or missile launches. Rudolph’s nose as an identifiable satellite target is the festive fiction. Public sources do not document a technical sensor lock on a flying sleigh.
Fighter jets as escorts
NORAD’s account describes U.S. F-15, F-16 and F-22 aircraft and Canadian CF-18s meeting Santa near Newfoundland and escorting him through North American airspace. This is a holiday narrative and a vivid way to connect the story with the command’s aerospace role—not evidence that aircraft are diverted from active defense missions to accompany an actual sleigh. The Canadian aircraft also reflect that NORAD is a bilateral command, not simply a U.S. military project.

Three meanings of “tracking”
- Operational tracking: NORAD’s real aerospace surveillance and warning work.
- Narrative tracking: the Christmas story in which radar, satellites and aircraft follow Santa.
- Digital presentation: a public website or app that shows a Santa route and location to visitors.
These meanings are related, but not interchangeable. NORAD’s reference to the same types of systems does not establish that classified sensor feeds are exposed to the public, that the site displays live command-and-control data, or that Santa is handled as an unidentified aircraft. The public sources describe a holiday experience, not a technical audit of the map’s data pipeline. Santa’s global route is likewise a storytelling extension beyond NORAD’s ordinary North American defense responsibility.

From hotline to global digital event
The tradition began with a telephone call, but its presentation grew as communications technology changed. By the 1990s and 2000s, websites and online maps had extended the experience beyond the hotline. Mobile apps, social media, mapping integrations, voice assistants and vehicle services later widened access. The precise launch dates of individual apps and integrations are not necessary to the larger story: NORAD’s once-local phone custom became a multi-platform event for a global audience.

The scale has varied by year and by what is counted. NORAD’s Santa page says the site receives several million unique visitors from more than 200 countries and territories, and that volunteers typically answer more than 130,000 hotline calls. A Department of Defense feature reported roughly 70 contributors helping establish the site, apps and phone lines, and more than 500 uniformed personnel, Defense Department civilians, families and supporters volunteering on Christmas Eve. The same feature cited 2020 figures of over 11 million website visitors, over 20,000 calls, more than 12.3 million Alexa requests and about 12,400 OnStar requests. A separate 2018 account cited more than 1,500 Christmas Eve volunteers and 126,103 calls in 2017. Those figures refer to different years and potentially different measures; they should not be collapsed into one supposedly typical total.
Latest confirmed access details: the 2025 season
NORAD’s November 28, 2025 announcement marked the program’s 70th anniversary and described the following channels and schedule for that season:
- Website: noradsanta.org, with its 2025 season launching December 1.
- App: NORAD’s official mobile app, listed for Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
- Phone: 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723). Live operators were scheduled for December 24 from 4 a.m. to midnight Mountain Standard Time; an interactive voice response service continued until 3 a.m. on December 25.
- Web calling and translation: The website offered a calling option, with virtual translation support for more than 200 languages.
- Other access: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X, Alexa, SiriusXM and OnStar were among the channels or partners listed for 2025.
These are dated 2025 details, not confirmed instructions for the 2026 season. Hours, app availability, supported languages and partner access can change; check NORAD’s official site and current seasonal announcement before relying on a number or schedule. Partner access can also depend on a country, device, vehicle, account or subscription. Alexa, OnStar and SiriusXM are access routes or contributors, not reasons to buy a device, vehicle or subscription just to follow Santa.
Why the tradition endures
The tracker makes an unusual bridge between institutional seriousness and childhood wonder. A military command’s language—warning systems, radar coverage, satellites and aircraft—becomes a reassuring Christmas story, while volunteers answer children directly. That mix helps explain its staying power: it is a family ritual, a public service performance and a reminder that technology can be presented through a human voice rather than only as machinery or threat.
Its appeal does not depend on believing that a public map exposes military surveillance. The tradition is strongest when its two layers remain clear: NORAD’s defense mission is real; the Santa mission borrows its imagery and capabilities to tell a story.
