Nine Inch Nails scored Disney’s TRON: Ares, the third film in the TRON franchise. The 24-track soundtrack was released on September 19, 2025; the film opened in U.S. theaters on October 10, 2025, and began streaming on Disney+ on January 7, 2026.
Who scored TRON: Ares?
Nine Inch Nails is credited with the score for TRON: Ares. It is the first film score released under the band’s name. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had previously composed film scores under their own names. Disney’s 2025 release counted 20 such scores and cited two Oscars, three Golden Globes, one Grammy, and one Emmy; those figures are the studio’s account.
Directed by Joachim Rønning, the film follows Ares, a sophisticated program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission. Disney describes the story as humanity’s first encounter with AI beings. Its announced cast includes Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges. Disney’s announcement introduced the band’s involvement.
Why did Nine Inch Nails fit the film?
Disney’s production notes present the choice as both a creative match and a nod to the band’s identity as digital pioneers. Director Joachim Rønning said he wanted “a grittier feel for this instalment” and that Nine Inch Nails “completed that vision.”

Producer Sean Bailey also situated the choice in the franchise’s musical history: “We felt an enormous obligation after Wendy Carlos’s 1982 and Daft Punk’s 2010 scores. I have huge reverence and admiration for both, and working with Daft Punk for the 2010 score was one of the most rewarding experiences in my career. So, when we thought about this film, not only who fits it creatively but who exemplifies being a digital pioneer, we thought about Nine Inch Nails. The fact that they are doing the score, I pinch myself.” These comments appear in Disney’s production notes.
Is the TRON: Ares soundtrack out?
Yes. TRON: Ares (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) was released on September 19, 2025. Disney identifies it as a 24-track album featuring original music by Nine Inch Nails. The first single, “As Alive As You Need Me To Be,” arrived on July 17, 2025.

Disney’s production notes characterize the album’s sound as built around pulsating synths, distorted textures, and haunting melodies, and describe it as containing no orchestral music. That is the studio’s description of the score. Examples from the track list include “INIT,” “FORKED REALITY,” “AS ALIVE AS YOU NEED ME TO BE,” “ECHOES,” “THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING,” “IN THE IMAGE OF,” “I KNOW YOU CAN FEEL IT,” “PERMANENCE,” and “WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER?” The notes identify some tracks as featuring vocals. See the official production notes for the complete track list.
How does the score relate to earlier TRON music?
The franchise’s previous musical touchstones are Wendy Carlos’s score for the 1982 TRON and Daft Punk’s score for 2010’s TRON: Legacy. Disney’s notes frame Nine Inch Nails as a new creative direction: a grittier, synth-driven approach with distorted textures, rather than an orchestral album. This describes the studio’s stated intent and characterization, not an independent track-by-track comparison.

What did the filmmakers say about the film?
At the July 2025 Comic-Con panel, director Joachim Rønning said, “It’s fun to see it on the big screen for the first time.” Creator Steven Lisberger said, “My feeling about ‘Tron’ is that the most important thing is we kick this technology around artistically before it kicks us around.” The Associated Press reported both remarks in its coverage of the panel: AP’s report.
