| Option | What it means | Services currently listed |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription streaming | The film may be included with a qualifying subscription or channel plan. Confirm the exact plan and any add-on requirement before starting playback. | Prime Video, Prime Video with ads, MGM+, MGM+ Amazon Channel, MGM+ Roku Premium Channel, fuboTV, Philo, and YouTube TV |
| Transactional video on demand | You pay separately to rent or purchase the digital title, whether or not you already subscribe to another service. | Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home |
If you already use Amazon’s ecosystem, check the Prime Video page first because it may present subscription, rental, and purchase choices in one place. If you do not have an eligible subscription, you may still see a separate rental or purchase option. Do not assume that a Prime Video listing means every Prime subscriber receives the film at no extra cost.
Digital rental and purchase options
If you would rather watch without adding another monthly service, you can rent or buy Nickel Boys digitally through the outlets currently listed for the U.S.:
- Amazon Video: Check the Prime Video/Amazon title page for the current rental and purchase prices and the account requirements.
- Apple TV Store: Apple’s official U.S. title page lists the film as a 2024 drama. The price is not permanent and should be checked in the Apple TV app or on the current store page. A listing in the Apple TV Store does not mean the film is included with an Apple TV+ subscription.
- Fandango at Home: The title is currently listed as a digital rental or purchase option. Confirm the current price, rental period, and playback details at checkout.
Amazon previously reported a $5.99 rental and $19.99 purchase price in entertainment coverage published on February 24, 2025. Those were prices reported at that time, not guaranteed prices for August 2026 or any later date. Digital stores can change prices and availability without notice.

What is Nickel Boys about?
Nickel Boys is a 2024 American drama directed by RaMell Ross and adapted by Ross and Joslyn Barnes from Colson Whitehead’s novel. It follows Elwood Curtis and Turner, two Black teenagers confined to a brutal reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida.

The film is notable for its unusual first-person visual perspective. Rather than presenting every scene through a conventional, detached camera, its visual approach places the audience close to the characters’ points of view. That choice makes the film formally demanding as well as emotionally intense: viewers should expect a serious historical drama centered on institutional racism, violence, abuse, friendship, memory, and moral endurance.
Apple lists the film at 2 hours and 20 minutes and rates it PG-13. The rating and runtime make it worth planning as a substantial, focused viewing rather than a short background watch.

Why was Nickel Boys nominated for an Oscar?
At the 97th Academy Awards in 2025, Nickel Boys was nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. The adapted screenplay nomination went to RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes.
The film’s Oscar recognition reflects both its literary adaptation and its distinctive filmmaking. It is not a documentary, but its fictional story is rooted in a real historical context and engages with documented abuses associated with Florida’s reform-school system.

The real history behind the story
The Nickel Academy is fictional. The story, however, draws on the history of Florida’s Dozier School for Boys, a real reform school associated with allegations and investigations involving severe abuse.
That distinction matters: Nickel Boys should not be treated as a literal nonfiction account of one institution or as a documentary reconstruction. It is a fictional film adapted from a novel, using the imagined Nickel Academy to explore experiences and historical patterns connected to real institutions and survivors’ accounts.
Should you read the book first?
The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead
Readers who want more context can start with The Nickel Boys, the source novel by Colson Whitehead. The paperback edition identified by Penguin Random House is 224 pages, was published June 30, 2020, and carries ISBN 9780345804341. Whitehead’s novel won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Reading first can help clarify the characters’ interior lives, the novel’s structure, and the relationship between the fictional Nickel Academy and the historical inspiration behind it. Watching the film first may be preferable for viewers who want to encounter RaMell Ross’s visual perspective without comparing it immediately with the book.
