This U.S. guide also covers Hulu, Apple TV+, Peacock, and Paramount+, and separates new premieres from returning seasons, continuing episodes, and films entering a subscription streaming window.
Because this is a retrospective calendar, a January 2025 debut should not be read as a guarantee that a title remains available today. Check the current service listing, region, plan, and access type before watching.
January 2025’s best streaming choices were spread across more than one service. Start with The Pitt on Max for a tense medical drama, Severance season 2 on Apple TV+ for prestige science fiction, The Wild Robot on Peacock for family viewing, Back in Action on Netflix for an accessible action-comedy, Goosebumps: The Vanishing on Disney+ for supernatural mystery, or Blink Twice on Prime Video for a darker movie night.
This is a U.S.-market retrospective guide to releases and streaming additions from January 2025. A January debut does not guarantee that a title is still available on the same service today. Catalog licensing, regional rights, subscription tiers, and rental windows can change, so check the individual service listing before subscribing or planning a watch party.

How to read the January 2025 streaming calendar
The list below separates three different kinds of additions:
- New originals or premieres: a new series, film, or documentary arriving on a service.
- Returning seasons or continuing episodes: an established show coming back or finishing a weekly run.
- Streaming-window or catalog additions: a film or older title becoming available through a subscription service. These are new to that service’s January lineup, not necessarily new releases overall.
That distinction matters. Severance season 2 and The Night Agent season 2 were returning shows, while The Pitt and On Call were new series premieres. Likewise, Blink Twice, A Different Man, and The Wild Robot were film streaming additions rather than brand-new theatrical productions.
Netflix: thrillers, documentaries, animation, and a big action-comedy
January 1: Missing You
Type: Netflix Original series, new premiere.
Missing You arrived on January 1 as a serialized mystery-thriller. It is the strongest Netflix choice in this group for viewers who want a continuing story, escalating questions, and a reason to watch more than one episode at a time.
January 1: Number 24
Type: Netflix Original film, new release.
Number 24 is a historical wartime drama rather than a conventional contemporary action title. Choose it if you are looking for a serious period story and want something more grounded than a typical blockbuster.
Recommended Free Tools
January 1: Don’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever
Type: documentary, new Netflix feature.
This is one of January’s clearest documentary picks. Its subject matter makes it a natural fit for viewers interested in extreme longevity, wellness culture, anti-aging claims, and controversial forms of self-optimization. It also gives documentary audiences a more topical alternative to the month’s scripted thrillers.
Early January: Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Selling the City
Types: animated film and unscripted docu-soap.
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is the family-friendly counterweight to Netflix’s darker January offerings. It is an easy choice when the audience includes children or when you want stop-motion comedy instead of a thriller.
Selling the City comes from the team behind Selling Sunset and follows the personalities and property deals of a New York real-estate group. It is best suited to viewers who prefer lifestyle television, workplace rivalries, and glossy reality drama.
January 17: Back in Action
Type: Netflix film, January streaming premiere.
Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz lead this broad action-comedy. It is the Netflix pick for a low-friction movie night: recognizable stars, spy-flavored action, and a lighter tone than the month’s psychological and historical dramas. It is also a useful recommendation when viewers want a movie rather than a new multi-episode commitment.

January: The Night Agent season 2
Type: returning thriller season.
The Night Agent season 2 was one of Netflix’s notable January returners. Do not present it as a brand-new series: viewers who have not seen season 1 should start there, while returning fans can use January’s release as their next serialized conspiracy and espionage watch.

- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Max: the month’s strongest new drama, plus films and international series
January 9: The Pitt
Type: Max Original series, new premiere.
The Pitt was one of January 2025’s clearest prestige-TV launches. Its medical-drama setting makes it a good recommendation for viewers who like high-pressure workplaces, ensemble storytelling, and stories built around difficult decisions rather than a single mystery box.
Because it was a new series, it belongs in a different category from Max’s returning shows. Check the service listing for the release pattern and current availability rather than assuming every episode arrived at once.
January 16: Harley Quinn season 5
Type: returning adult-animated series.
The fifth season of Harley Quinn returned in January. This is adult animation, not family animation, and its audience is closer to viewers seeking irreverent superhero comedy than to families choosing The Wild Robot or Wallace & Gromit.
January 17: A Different Man
Type: film streaming debut.
A Different Man became available on Max on January 17. It is the month’s Max film recommendation for awards-season followers and viewers who prefer character-driven drama over franchise spectacle. Treat it as a streaming-window addition, not a Max Original series or a new television premiere.
January: Sons of Ecstasy
Type: documentary.
Sons of Ecstasy broadens Max’s lineup beyond scripted drama. It is a natural choice for documentary viewers who want a true-story subject with a crime, culture, or social-history angle, and it pairs well with Netflix’s Don’t Die and Disney+’s UFOs: Investigating the Unknown in a nonfiction-focused watchlist.
January: Scars of Beauty and The Eastern Gate
Type: international additions.
These titles were part of Max’s January lineup and are useful reminders that the service’s schedule was not limited to U.S. originals. Exact availability and episode information can vary by market, so U.S. viewers should use the Max listing for the current title page rather than relying on a general international release calendar.
Prime Video: a psychological thriller and a police procedural
January 9: On Call
Type: new Prime Video series premiere.
On Call is a Dick Wolf police procedural. It is the straightforward Prime Video recommendation for viewers who want patrol work, episode-driven cases, and an ensemble format rather than an abstract mystery or a limited documentary.
January 21: Blink Twice
Type: film streaming addition.
Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut arrived for Prime Video subscribers on January 21. Its island setting and psychological-thriller premise make it a darker movie-night choice, especially for viewers who have already worked through January’s more conventional action and family options.
Prime Video availability needs an extra check. The service can show titles included with a Prime Video subscription alongside rentals, purchases, add-on channels, and other transactional options. Do not assume that a title appearing in the Prime Video app is included at no additional charge; confirm the individual listing and the wording of the access option before starting it.

Disney+: supernatural mystery, Marvel animation, and nonfiction
January 10: Goosebumps: The Vanishing
Type: new Disney+ season, all eight episodes released together.
Goosebumps: The Vanishing premiered on January 10 with all eight episodes. Disney’s synopsis centers on twins in Brooklyn and a mystery connected to teenagers who vanished in 1994. It is a strong choice for teens, families with older children, and viewers who want a contained supernatural mystery.
January 9: UFOs: Investigating the Unknown season 2
Type: returning documentary series.
The second season of UFOs: Investigating the Unknown gives documentary viewers a nonfiction alternative to Disney+’s scripted releases. It should be labeled as a returning documentary season, not a new Disney+ original series, and viewers should distinguish its investigative format from fictional science fiction such as Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
January 29: Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Type: new animated Marvel series.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man premiered on January 29, making it Disney+’s major animated Marvel arrival for the month. It is the obvious January pick for superhero and franchise viewers, although it serves a different audience from the adult animation of Harley Quinn.
January: continuing episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Type: returning or ongoing weekly release, not a new-season premiere.
January included the continuing run and season finale of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The finale arrived during the month, but the show itself began its release earlier, so it should not be described as a January premiere.

Type: returning nonfiction series and catalog additions.
A Real Bug’s Life season 2 and other National Geographic or library titles expanded Disney+’s family and nonfiction selection. Disney’s own listings warn that availability can vary by region and may change. That warning is particularly important for library titles: a title being listed in the U.S. January 2025 lineup is a historical availability note, not a promise of continued access.
Hulu: a separate U.S. comparison point
January: Paradise
Type: new Hulu series premiere.
Paradise was one of Hulu’s notable January releases. Include it when comparing the major U.S. services, especially if the viewer already uses a bundle-oriented setup, but keep Hulu separate from Disney+ in the article and in the subscription advice.

Disney+ and Hulu have overlapping corporate and bundle relationships in the United States, but that does not mean every Disney+ title automatically appears on Hulu or that every Hulu title is included in a Disney+ plan. Verify the specific service, plan, and listing at the time of viewing.

January 17: Severance season 2
Type: returning Apple TV+ series.
Severance season 2 was one of January’s biggest streaming returns, arriving after the long gap following season 1. It is the month’s headline choice for viewers who like workplace mysteries, speculative science fiction, careful visual design, and stories that reward close attention.
Start with season 1 if you are new to the show. Calling season 2 a new show would obscure the viewing order and undersell why its return mattered.
January 22: Prime Target
Type: new Apple TV+ series, eight-episode mathematical conspiracy thriller.
Prime Target premiered on January 22. Its mathematical-conspiracy premise makes it a natural companion to Severance for viewers who want high-concept suspense, but it is a new eight-episode series rather than a continuation of an existing season.

Peacock: family animation and reality competition
January 24: The Wild Robot
Type: animated film streaming addition.
The Wild Robot began streaming on Peacock on January 24. The story follows a robot stranded in the wilderness who becomes caretaker to a young gosling. It is one of the safest family recommendations in the entire January calendar, with a premise that works for children while still offering an emotional, character-led movie for adults watching with them.
January 9: The Traitors season 3
Type: returning reality-competition series.
Season 3 of The Traitors returned for viewers who prefer social strategy, alliances, deception, and ensemble conflict. It is a particularly good alternative when a household is not in the mood for scripted drama: the tension comes from the contestants’ decisions and relationships rather than a fictional plot.
Paramount+: franchise science fiction
January 24: Star Trek: Section 31
Type: Paramount+ film release.
Star Trek: Section 31 arrived in January as a film rather than a new episodic season. It is the natural Paramount+ recommendation for franchise science-fiction viewers and a useful choice for anyone comparing January’s major branded releases with Disney+’s Marvel and Star Wars offerings.
Paramount+ listings can also be affected by Showtime-linked packaging and regional or plan differences. The January guide should not imply that every Paramount+ or Showtime-related title has the same access rules.

Best January 2025 picks by mood
For a thriller night
- Missing You on Netflix: choose this for a serialized mystery that can carry several viewing sessions.
- Blink Twice on Prime Video: choose this for a darker, self-contained psychological thriller.
- Severance season 2 on Apple TV+: choose this for speculative workplace mystery, but begin with season 1 if necessary.
- Prime Target on Apple TV+: choose this for an eight-episode conspiracy built around mathematics.
For family viewing
- The Wild Robot on Peacock: the clearest family-film recommendation.
- Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl on Netflix: a good stop-motion comedy option.
- Goosebumps: The Vanishing on Disney+: better suited to teens and older children who enjoy spooky mysteries.
For prestige drama
- The Pitt on Max: a new medical drama and the month’s strongest new scripted launch.
- A Different Man on Max: a character-driven film choice for awards-season audiences.
- Severance season 2 on Apple TV+: the major return for viewers who prefer ambitious science fiction.

How to watch across eight streaming services
- Identify the service before choosing the title. Netflix, Max, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV+, Peacock, and Paramount+ each have separate catalogs and plan rules.
- Check whether the title is included. This is especially important on Prime Video, where the app may present subscription titles beside rentals, purchases, add-on channels, or other offers.
- Confirm the U.S. listing. Availability can differ by country, and Disney+ specifically notes that library titles can vary by region and change over time.
- Check the release pattern. Some entries above were complete film releases or full-season drops, while others were weekly episodes or returning seasons. A premiere date is not always the date when every episode became available.
- Use the service’s own search and title page. Search for the exact title, then check the season, episode, plan, and access label before pressing play.
- Separate hardware from subscriptions. A smart TV, streaming stick, or media player gives you a way to run supported apps; it does not include the paid services themselves.
If your television does not already have the apps you need, a Fire TV Stick 4K can provide a central way to access supported streaming applications. Check the current model’s app compatibility, television requirements, and regional support, and remember that subscriptions are separate from the device.
What January 2025 was really good at
The month’s schedule was unusually balanced. Netflix supplied the broadest mix of thriller, documentary, reality, animation, and action-comedy choices. Max had the clearest new prestige drama in The Pitt and a notable film addition in A Different Man. Apple TV+ owned the high-concept return with Severance season 2. Disney+ combined a complete supernatural season with Marvel animation, nonfiction, and continuing Star Wars episodes. Peacock covered both family animation and reality competition, while Prime Video and Paramount+ filled in psychological thriller, police procedural, and franchise science fiction.
For documentary-focused viewers, the most useful shortlist is Don’t Die, UFOs: Investigating the Unknown season 2, Sons of Ecstasy, and A Real Bug’s Life season 2. For a household choosing one title tonight, match the mood first, then verify the service and access tier. That avoids the most common January streaming mistake: confusing a title’s historical debut with guaranteed current availability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these movies and shows still streaming?
No. This article records the U.S. streaming premieres and lineup additions from January 2025. Licensing, regional availability, and subscription windows can change, so check the individual service listing before watching.

Not necessarily. Prime Video can display titles included with a subscription alongside rentals, purchases, add-on channels, and other access options. Open the title page and confirm the access label before starting it.
