The film does not simply hide a final-act fact; it changes the kind of story you thought you were watching. That gamble will reward viewers who enjoy slow-burn mysteries and unsettling genre pivots, but frustrate anyone expecting immediate scares, a conventional zombie movie, or a fully explained mythology.
New Life begins with a simple question: why is Jess running?
She is frightened, injured, and moving north through the Pacific Northwest toward the Canadian border. Behind her is a trail of violence and unanswered questions. Elsa Gray, a professional fixer with a talent for solving difficult problems, is hired to find her. At first, the setup suggests a stripped-down pursuit thriller: one woman escapes, another tracks her, and the audience gradually learns what happened.
That description is deliberately incomplete. John Rosman’s feature debut uses the pursuit story as a kind of disguise. As Elsa closes in and the evidence around Jess becomes more disturbing, New Life moves into outbreak horror, bodily transformation, and apocalyptic anxiety. The shift is sharp enough to change the meaning of the film’s opening scenes without making the first half irrelevant.

A spoiler-conscious explanation of the twist
The central surprise is not best understood as one isolated revelation. New Life delays the point at which the audience can confidently classify what it is watching.
For much of the opening movement, the film withholds the reason for Jess’s flight. Her panic, the blood, the secrecy, and the bodies can initially be interpreted through the language of a crime thriller or manhunt. Elsa’s investigation reinforces that reading: she approaches the case professionally, gathering information and following the practical trail left behind.
Then the movie recontextualizes that evidence through an emerging infection and a wider social threat. The chase is still important, but it is no longer the entire story. What appeared to be one woman’s desperate attempt to disappear becomes part of a crisis involving illness, physical change, and the possibility of catastrophe.
That is about as far as a spoiler-free review should go. The film’s marketing and early narrative intentionally obscure the nature of Jess’s flight, and much of the experience depends on discovering the new genre alongside the characters. Viewers who want every late-film event explained should know that this review is identifying the film’s turn, not recounting its final sequence.
Two women give the thriller its emotional center
The film would not work as well if Jess were merely a mystery to be solved or Elsa were only a detective-shaped plot device. Hayley Erin and Sonya Walger give the two women distinct emotional trajectories, even while the screenplay keeps their circumstances partially hidden.
Erin’s Jess is frightened, guarded, and increasingly desperate. Her silence creates suspicion, but it also communicates someone trying to preserve control while the world around her becomes impossible to explain. The performance avoids turning her into a conventional action heroine. Jess is resourceful, but she is also vulnerable and frequently looks as though survival requires more physical and emotional effort than she can afford.
Walger’s Elsa is more composed on the surface. As a professional fixer, she knows how to assess risk, question people, and keep moving. But she is also dealing with a recent diagnosis of ALS. That information is not decorative backstory. It shapes how she understands her body, her future, and the value of maintaining agency while she still can.

The parallel between the women is one of the film’s most effective ideas. Jess is confronting a threat that appears to be spreading through bodies and communities. Elsa is confronting a known degenerative illness that has already altered the horizon of her life. Their conditions are not treated as interchangeable, and the film is not arguing that ALS is equivalent to an outbreak. Instead, Elsa’s diagnosis gives the horror a personal counterpoint: both women are forced to think about physical decline, dependence, dignity, and what it means to remain oneself when the body becomes unreliable.
Rosman has discussed research involving a woman with ALS as an influence on the project. That background helps explain why Elsa’s illness has more thematic weight than the usual thriller detail designed simply to make a protagonist sympathetic. It informs the character’s choices and gives the film’s body horror an unusually intimate dimension.
The genre pivot is bold, but not universally convincing
The best thing about New Life is also the element most likely to divide viewers. The film takes a genuine risk by asking the audience to invest in one narrative before revealing that a much larger and stranger narrative is taking shape underneath it.
When the shift works, earlier details become newly ominous. Jess’s behavior, the scattered violence, and Elsa’s professional investigation acquire a different context. The film’s suspense comes not only from wondering whether Elsa will catch Jess, but from realizing that the rules governing the chase may be changing.
When the shift does not work, the movie can feel as if it has withheld information for too long. Some viewers will find the eventual explanation inventive and unsettling; others may find it confusing or less convincing than the setup promised. The film’s ambiguity is purposeful, but purposeful ambiguity is not automatically satisfying ambiguity.

What kind of horror movie is it?
New Life is better described as a tense, brooding thriller with horror elements than as a conventional scare machine. It contains outbreak horror, body horror, violent bursts, and apocalyptic implications, but it does not build its identity around constant jump scares or large-scale spectacle.

The opening is restrained. The film spends time establishing the two women, their separate pressures, and the uncertainty surrounding Jess. That patience allows the later horror to land with greater emotional force, because the danger is not happening to anonymous figures in a disposable survival scenario.
It also means the film can feel slow in the middle. The investigative material and character pauses are necessary to the eventual recontextualization, but the escalation is not perfectly even. The final coda, in particular, has not impressed every critic as much as the central genre turn.

The most effective scares are therefore conceptual and physical rather than purely mechanical. New Life draws unease from illness anxiety, bodily vulnerability, isolation, and the collapse of ordinary social rules. It is more interested in the fear of losing control than in displaying an elaborate monster or staging uninterrupted action.
The film’s themes: survival, transformation, and starting over
The title New Life carries several meanings. Jess is trying to reach a place where she can begin again. Elsa is confronting a future in which the life she knows and the abilities she relies on are changing. The outbreak story expands those private concerns into a larger question: what does starting over mean when survival requires surrendering the assumptions that made ordinary life recognizable?
This does not turn the movie into a tidy allegory. Its illness and outbreak elements operate differently, and the film’s emotional force comes partly from the tension between those different experiences. Still, the connection gives the horror more substance than a simple infection plot. The characters are not only trying to avoid death; they are trying to retain identity and choice under conditions that threaten both.
The movie also delays moral certainty. Because the audience initially knows little about Jess and sees Elsa through the practical logic of the pursuit, it is not immediately obvious whom to trust. That uncertainty is more interesting than a straightforward hero-versus-monster arrangement. The film’s central conflict keeps shifting between questions of guilt, protection, responsibility, and survival.

New Life is an independent film with a relatively modest production scale, and it does not attempt to compete with studio apocalypse movies on spectacle. Its strengths are atmosphere, performance, and escalation rather than expansive destruction or elaborate effects work.

That limitation is generally used productively. The film keeps attention close to Jess and Elsa, allowing silence, hesitation, and physical discomfort to do work that a larger production might replace with exposition or action. The narrow focus also makes the developing crisis feel less like a news report about the end of the world and more like a threat pressing into individual lives.
The performances are especially important during the quiet sections. Erin must preserve Jess’s mystery without making her unreadable, while Walger gives Elsa competence without allowing it to erase her fear. Their contrasting forms of vulnerability provide the film with an emotional structure that the plot alone could not supply.
Is New Life worth watching?
Watch it if you like slow-burn mysteries, character-driven horror, outbreak anxiety, body horror, morally complicated protagonists, or films that change genres midway through. The 84-minute running time also makes the experiment relatively compact; the movie asks for patience, but it does not demand an extended commitment.

Temper your expectations if you want immediate scares, relentless action, extensive world-building, or a conventional zombie film. This is not best approached as a creature-feature showcase. It is a pursuit thriller that gradually reveals a more disturbing set of rules.
The recommendation is simple: New Life is worth watching for its performances and audacious genre pivot, provided you are willing to wait through a deliberately restrained first half. Its explanation may not satisfy everyone, and the middle can meander, but the film earns credit for attempting a structural surprise instead of merely hiding a piece of information until the end.

Critical reception
Reception has been broadly favorable without being unanimous. At the time represented in the research for this review, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 94% Tomatometer score from 66 critics and a 74% audience score from more than 500 ratings. Metacritic listed a score of 68, categorized as generally favorable. These figures are snapshots rather than permanent facts and may change as additional reviews and ratings are added.
The positive response emphasizes the central performances, the unusual combination of genres, the emotional stakes, and the film’s willingness to take a structural risk. The reservations focus on the deliberately slow middle, the modest scale, the degree of ambiguity, and a conclusion that some viewers find weaker than the buildup.
