Is The Breakthrough based on a true story?
Yes, but it is a fictional drama based on the Linköping double-murder case and the genealogical investigation associated with solving it. Netflix’s premise says the homicide remained unsolved for 16 years; that is the span given in Netflix’s description. The dramatized characters and story may differ from the real investigation.
The series draws on journalist Anna Bodin and genealogist Peter Sjölund’s nonfiction book, The Breakthrough: How the genealogist solved the double murder in Linköping. Netflix names Lisa Siwe as director, Oskar Söderlund as screenwriter and FLX as the production company. How many episodes does the series have?
The Breakthrough is a four-episode miniseries. Netflix’s episode descriptions are:
- “The Unthinkable” — After a double murder shocks a quiet Swedish town, detective John promises the grieving families he will find the killer.
- “Leave No Stone Unturned” — Years pass without answers; John’s home life deteriorates, and he seeks an unlikely ally.
