Netflix has redesigned its TV app with a top navigation bar, a new My Netflix hub and recommendations intended to respond more quickly to what viewers do while browsing. But “AI-powered TV interface” is too broad: Netflix’s public description of the TV redesign focuses on navigation and personalized recommendations, while its separately announced generative-AI search beta was for iOS.
What Netflix changed on TV
Netflix announced its major TV experience redesign on May 7, 2025. The company said it wanted to make it easier to find something to watch, and its Help Center now says the new experience is available on most TVs and TV streaming devices, subject to device requirements and rollout.
The main change is structural, not just visual: shortcuts moved to the top of the screen, and destinations that had separate menu entries are now reached in different ways.

Netflix says the homepage recommendations can also respond to actions during browsing, including watching trailers or giving a title a thumbs-up. The stated aim is to make discovery more responsive to a viewer’s current interests.

What “AI-powered recommendations” actually means
Netflix describes recommendations as personalized predictions based on signals such as what a profile starts or finishes, ratings, viewing behavior and interactions with titles and trailers. That is not the same as a conversational assistant generating a new list from a request.
- Personalized recommendations use a profile’s viewing and interaction signals, along with information about titles, to suggest what that viewer might like.
- More responsive recommendations means the TV homepage is intended to react more quickly to current browsing behavior, such as watching a trailer or rating a title.
- Generative-AI discovery interprets natural-language requests. Netflix’s May 2025 announcement described a small, opt-in search beta on iOS; it did not establish that conversational generative-AI search is generally available in the redesigned TV app.
Netflix’s announcement discussed the TV redesign and the iOS experiment in the same product presentation, but described them as distinct features. The official TV documentation supports a redesigned layout and more responsive recommendations, not a universal AI chatbot on television. Where familiar controls went
Browse by genre
The Categories shortcut was removed from the menu. Select Search at the top of the homepage to browse categories or genres.

Find new and trending titles
The New & Popular menu shortcut was removed. Look for rows such as New on Netflix and Top 10 on the homepage and on the shows and movies pages. These rows are the suggested route to those titles, rather than a direct replacement menu item.

Return to the top navigation
Press the remote’s Back button to return to the menu at the top of the homepage.
Resume or revisit titles
Open My Netflix for saved items and Continue Watching, along with other viewing-related items Netflix gathers for the profile.

Switch profiles
Use the Profiles shortcut to change profiles. Recommendations are profile-specific, so using the right profile matters in a shared household; Netflix’s getting-started guidance explains profiles and setup.
Who gets the redesigned layout?
As of August 18, 2026, Netflix says the new experience is available on most TVs and TV streaming devices, but not necessarily every device. Rollout and technical requirements can leave some viewers on the older layout. If the main shortcuts appear along the top of the screen, the device is using the new experience.
Netflix supports its app across smart TVs, Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, Apple TV, Chromecast, game consoles, cable boxes and other streaming players. Some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer support Netflix; the date is a warning about possible compatibility, not a guarantee that every older device has stopped working. Do you need a new TV, device or plan?
The redesign is a TV-app update, not a feature Netflix presents as requiring a particular subscription tier. If your current device supports Netflix and receives the new experience, you do not need to buy a TV or upgrade your plan just to get the redesigned layout.
Device and plan compatibility are separate questions. Netflix says a small percentage of devices cannot use its ad-supported experience because their app or operating system cannot be updated sufficiently. To check, open Netflix, press Back, select the profile icon, then choose Get Help → Plan Compatibility. If that option does not appear, Netflix says the device cannot be used with the ad-supported experience. See its ad-supported plan compatibility guidance.
Check your device before buying anything
- Open Netflix and press the remote’s Back button. Check whether the main shortcuts appear at the top.
- If the older layout remains, install available software updates for the TV or streaming device.
- Check the device’s app store for a Netflix app update, or follow Netflix’s app download instructions.
- Confirm that the hardware remains supported. Netflix’s TV viewing guide covers ways to watch on a television.
- If you are checking the ad-supported experience, use Get Help → Plan Compatibility as described above.
- Consider a supported external streaming player only if the television’s built-in system is unsupported, cannot be updated, or no longer meets your needs.
Netflix also documents QR-code, browser-activation and remote sign-in methods for TV users in its TV sign-in instructions.

Why the redesign may feel better—or worse
The top menu makes Search, profiles and My Netflix easier to spot, and bringing saved and in-progress titles together can help viewers get back to something quickly. More visible title context may help with a decision before a viewer opens a show or film.
The trade-off is that a cleaner menu removes direct shortcuts some viewers relied on. Genre browsing now starts in Search; new and trending titles are surfaced in homepage rows rather than a dedicated New & Popular destination. Larger, more prominent choices can also mean fewer titles visible at once than in a denser grid.
Personalization can save time, but it can also keep surfacing familiar kinds of titles. A recommendation that responds quickly is not necessarily a broader recommendation. Ratings, viewing behavior and interactions influence what appears, and shared or inconsistently used profiles can blur those signals.
Netflix’s public layout guidance does not identify a general setting to restore the old interface. The rollout is controlled by Netflix and varies with device compatibility. There is no supported rollback switch established in the cited guidance.

How Netflix’s approach differs from TV-platform alternatives
Netflix’s redesign changes discovery inside the Netflix app. Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV and Google TV can shape the home screen or discovery experience across a broader device platform, so they are not direct substitutes for a Netflix app update.

These comparisons describe platform-level discovery, not features guaranteed to appear inside the Netflix app on every device. A new streaming player makes sense when existing hardware is unsupported or unsatisfactory, or when a viewer wants the new device’s broader interface—not simply because Netflix has redesigned its app.
