Netflix’s 2025 slate included the finales of Squid Game and The Sandman, new seasons of Wednesday, Black Mirror and The Witcher, and films such as Frankenstein, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and The Thursday Murder Club.
This is a retrospective guide to the Netflix-promoted 2025 slate, written with the benefit of the service’s January 30, 2025 showcase and its later Tudum year guides. It is not a complete audit of every licensed film or television title added to Netflix during the calendar year. Dates and availability can also vary by country.
The biggest Netflix 2025 releases at a glance
Netflix’s headline 2025 programming strategy combined established franchises, prestige dramas, comedies, literary adaptations, documentaries, reality competitions and celebrity-led unscripted projects. The most prominent titles included:
- Stranger Things, Season 5 — the final season of Netflix’s science-fiction phenomenon. The January announcement confirmed the season was part of the slate but did not provide a precise release date.
- Wednesday, Season 2 — released in two parts, on August 6 and September 3, 2025.
- Squid Game, Season 3 — the concluding season, listed for June 27, 2025.
- Frankenstein — Guillermo del Toro’s long-developed adaptation, announced for November 2025.
- Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery — the third Benoit Blanc mystery, announced for fall 2025.
- Happy Gilmore 2 — Adam Sandler’s return to the golf-comedy character.
- The Witcher, Season 4 — the first season with Liam Hemsworth playing Geralt.
- The Thursday Murder Club — Chris Columbus’s adaptation of Richard Osman’s bestselling mystery novel.
For documentary viewers, the year also brought prominent projects including American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden, Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, Katrina: Come Hell and High Water, Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey and America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys.

Returning Netflix series in 2025
The returning-series portion of the slate leaned heavily on finales, franchise expansions and seasons with major cast or story changes.
Squid Game, Season 3 — June 27
Netflix listed the third season of Squid Game for June 27, 2025, describing it as the conclusion of Hwang Dong-hyuk’s story. Gi-hun continued trying to end the games, while the Front Man prepared his next move. It was one of the year’s clearest endpoint releases: unlike a routine renewal, Season 3 was positioned as the final chapter of the main story.
Black Mirror, Season 7 — April 10
The seventh season of Black Mirror was scheduled for April 10, 2025. Netflix’s Tudum guide identified six new episodes, including a sequel to USS Callister. The season therefore combined the anthology’s usual standalone storytelling with at least one return to an already established science-fiction world.
The Sandman, Season 2 — July 3 and July 24
The final season of The Sandman was divided into two volumes. Volume 1 was scheduled for July 3, followed by Volume 2 on July 24, 2025. The split release made this a two-date event rather than a single season launch.
Wednesday, Season 2 — August 6 and September 3
Jenna Ortega returned as Wednesday Addams for a second season released in two parts: Part 1 on August 6 and Part 2 on September 3. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar returned as creators and showrunners, while Tim Burton continued as an executive producer and director. The new season was among Netflix’s most visible returning series and one of the clearest examples of the company using a staggered release for a major franchise.
The Witcher, Season 4 — October 30
The Witcher Season 4 was listed for October 30, 2025. Liam Hemsworth took over the role of Geralt, with the story continuing to follow Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri across a Continent shaped by war. The recasting made Season 4 a significant transition point for the series even though the central fantasy storyline continued.
Squid Game: The Challenge, Season 2 — November 4
The unscripted competition adaptation returned on November 4 with 456 new contestants competing for a $4.56 million prize. It uses the visual identity and basic competitive premise of Squid Game without turning the fictional drama’s lethal games into reality.
Emily in Paris, Season 5 — December 18
Season 5 of Emily in Paris was listed for December 18. Emily was set to lead Agence Grateau’s Rome office, creating a new professional setting alongside the show’s continuing romantic complications.

Stranger Things, Season 5
Netflix included the fifth and final season of Stranger Things among its major returning favorites in the January showcase. The announcement confirmed the season’s place in the 2025 strategy but did not provide a precise date in the source announcement. That distinction matters: an early showcase announcement should not be treated as proof of a January premiere or another exact date unless a later territory-specific Netflix listing confirms it.
New and newly prominent scripted series
Netflix’s new scripted lineup ranged from political thrillers and murder mysteries to regional dramas, comedies and limited series.
| Series | What it is | Netflix’s 2025 timing |
|---|---|---|
| Zero Day | A prestige political thriller starring Robert De Niro. | 2025 slate |
| The Residence | A Shondaland White House murder mystery starring Uzo Aduba and Randall Park. Netflix described it as a screwball whodunit. | 2025 |
| Ransom Canyon | A modern Western about three ranching families in Texas Hill Country. | 2025 slate |
| Untamed | A mystery thriller starring Eric Bana as a National Parks Service special agent investigating a brutal death in the wilderness. | July 17 |
| The Four Seasons | Tina Fey’s television adaptation of the 1981 film, with Fey, Steve Carell, Colman Domingo and Will Forte in the ensemble. | 2025 slate |
| The Beast in Me | A drama-thriller led by Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys. | 2025 slate |
| North of North | A Canadian comedy-drama about an Inuk woman starting over in a small Arctic town. | April 10 |
| Apple Cider Vinegar | A limited drama inspired by the wellness-influencer story of Belle Gibson. | 2025 slate |
Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer occupied the nonfiction side of the same year-round conversation. Netflix listed the documentary series for March 31, 2025, centering on the disappearances and the Gilgo Beach investigation.
Netflix’s 2025 movies by release period
The film slate mixed original productions, sequels, literary adaptations, franchise entries and holiday releases. Where Netflix supplied a firm date, it is included below; where the announcement used a season or month, the broader window is preserved.

Spring films
The Electric State — March 14
Directed by the Russo brothers, this science-fiction adventure starred Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. It adapted Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel, whose retro-futurist imagery provided the source for the film’s alternate technological landscape.
The Life List — March 28
Sofia Carson played Alex Rose, a woman who follows a childhood bucket list after her mother sends her on the quest. The film is based on Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel of the same name, making it one of the year’s most straightforward book-to-screen adaptations.
Source material: Readers who want to compare the adaptation can look for Lori Nelson Spielman’s The Life List. It is a contextual recommendation, not required preparation for the film.
Havoc — spring
This Tom Hardy action thriller was announced for spring 2025 and later included among Netflix’s principal films for the year. The available slate information identifies the broad release period rather than a firm date.

The sequel continued Netflix’s immortal-warrior action franchise and was one of the major returning film properties named in the January showcase.
Fear Street: Prom Queen — summer
This new entry in the Fear Street horror franchise was announced for summer 2025. The title extended one of Netflix’s most recognizable horror brands with another story set within its established universe.
Happy Gilmore 2 — summer
Adam Sandler returned to the golf-comedy world of Happy Gilmore in one of Netflix’s featured summer films. It was a legacy-comedy sequel rather than a new property.

Tyler Perry’s thriller was included in Netflix’s summer film slate. The early announcement supplied the seasonal window rather than a specific release date.
The Thursday Murder Club — August 28
Chris Columbus directed this adaptation of Richard Osman’s bestselling mystery novel. The ensemble cast included Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie. The story’s established literary identity gave the film a different kind of franchise appeal from sequels such as The Old Guard 2 or Happy Gilmore 2.
Source material: The film is based on the original Thursday Murder Club novel by Richard Osman. It is a natural choice for readers who want the mystery’s original version before watching, although the adaptation can also be approached on its own.
Fall and holiday films
Frankenstein — November
Guillermo del Toro’s long-developed adaptation of Frankenstein was announced for November 2025. It was among the year’s highest-profile literary and legacy-property projects, pairing a classic source text with a filmmaker strongly associated with fantastical and Gothic imagery.

Train Dreams — limited theatrical release from November 7
Train Dreams adapted Denis Johnson’s novella and starred Joel Edgerton. Clint Bentley directed and co-wrote the film. Tudum listed a limited theatrical release beginning November 7 before its Netflix launch, an example of how a Netflix film’s theatrical and streaming windows may not be identical.
Holiday releases
A Merry Little Ex-Mas, starring Alicia Silverstone, was listed for the fall and holiday period. Tudum’s fall roundup also featured Champagne Problems, Jingle Bell Heist and My Secret Santa. The early slate information did not supply one firm date for every holiday title.
Documentaries, reality and unscripted programming
Netflix’s unscripted strategy in 2025 extended well beyond dating shows. The company highlighted music competitions, social experiments, sports stories, historical investigations, celebrity documentaries and returning reality franchises.
New and returning unscripted titles
- Building the Band — one of the music-centered programs named in Netflix’s January showcase.
- Million Dollar Secret — a competition and social-experiment format also highlighted in the showcase.
- Let’s Marry Harry — included in Netflix’s later reality roundup.
- Simon Cowell: The Next Act — a celebrity and music-industry project listed among the year’s unscripted programming.
- Age of Attraction — included in the later reality lineup.
- Love Con Revenge — a relationship-focused reality and investigation title in the same roundup.
- Perfect Match, Season 3 — the returning dating competition.
- Squid Game: The Challenge, Season 2 — the large-scale competition with 456 contestants and a $4.56 million prize; it is also listed above with its November 4 date.
- She the People, Part 2 — included in Netflix’s 2025 unscripted and comedy-related programming roundup.
Documentary highlights
American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden examined one of the most consequential manhunts in recent history. Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer focused on the disappearances and the Gilgo Beach investigation, with Netflix listing March 31, 2025. Katrina: Come Hell and High Water turned to the aftermath and continuing significance of Hurricane Katrina.
On the sports and culture side, America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys explored the Dallas Cowboys’ wider story, while Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey offered a more intimate conservation narrative. The latter was also one of the year’s major documentary films and was listed for April 21.
These titles should be understood as notable Netflix-promoted documentary and unscripted releases, not proof that they represented every documentary added to the platform in 2025.

What Netflix’s 2025 slate says about adaptations and franchises
Adaptation was one of the clearest connecting ideas across the year. Netflix used several types of source material:
- Novels: The Life List came from Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel, while The Thursday Murder Club adapted Richard Osman’s mystery.
- Graphic novels: The Electric State was based on Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel.
- Novellas: Train Dreams adapted Denis Johnson’s novella.
- Classic and legacy properties: Frankenstein, Fear Street: Prom Queen, The Old Guard 2, Wake Up Dead Man, Happy Gilmore 2 and Stranger Things all carried recognizable source, franchise or legacy hooks.
Read the source material before watching
The most natural book-related companion titles are Lori Nelson Spielman’s The Life List, the original Thursday Murder Club novel, The Electric State graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag and Denis Johnson’s Train Dreams. A single reading list or audiobook shelf covering the books behind Netflix’s 2025 movies is more useful than treating every Netflix release as a book adaptation. Availability, formats and editions vary by market.
None of these books should be described as an official Netflix tie-in simply because a film was adapted from the source material.

Stranger Things merchandise and franchise products
The anticipation around Stranger Things Season 5 also created a legitimate merchandise angle. Netflix’s 2025 product coverage identified official physical products and licensed partnerships involving apparel, toys, accessories, collectibles and scripts, with examples including Jazwares, Target, Primark, Netflix Shop, Hot Topic, Nike and Converse.
Fans looking for official Stranger Things merchandise can compare products through the documented licensed ecosystem rather than assuming that every marketplace listing is official. The Netflix Shop Stranger Things collection is the clearest branded starting point, but inventory, licensing and geographic availability should be checked at publication because they can change.
Dates, countries and what this guide does not claim
There are three important limitations to any list titled all the shows and movies coming to Netflix in 2025.
- This is a promoted slate, not a complete catalog. Netflix’s January showcase and Tudum guides emphasized Netflix originals, major returning properties, documentaries, unscripted programs and selected films. They did not constitute a title-by-title audit of every licensed movie or series added in every country during 2025.
- A Netflix date may be territory-specific. Tudum’s guides are Netflix editorial resources, but they should not automatically be treated as a universal global release calendar. A date confirmed for the U.S. listing may not describe availability in every market.
- Announcement windows are not the same as firm dates. Early Netflix announcements often used spring, summer, fall or November. Later Tudum pages supplied exact dates for many titles, including Squid Game Season 3, Black Mirror Season 7, Wednesday and The Witcher. For titles that retained only a broad window in the available research, this guide keeps that wording rather than inventing a day.
Netflix’s January 30 presentation covered a broader entertainment strategy that also included live events and games. This article concentrates on shows, films, documentaries and unscripted programming, which are the parts most directly relevant to a viewing guide.
