On February 11, 2011, CBS News correspondent Lara Logan was reporting from Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt, after President Hosni Mubarak stepped down. A crowd separated her from her colleagues and security personnel. Logan later said she was beaten and sexually assaulted for roughly 25 minutes and believed she was going to die. She was eventually rescued by Egyptian women and soldiers, hospitalized after returning to the United States, and publicly described the attack in a 2011 60 Minutes interview.
Logan revisited the assault in 2020 because she believed some media coverage had minimized what happened. The record requires care: contemporaneous CBS and ABC reports described a violent sexual assault, while Logan later used more specific terms, including rape and sodomy, when recounting her experience.
What happened to Lara Logan in Tahrir Square?
Lara Logan was CBS News’s chief foreign correspondent and a 60 Minutes reporter when she traveled to Tahrir Square to cover celebrations following Mubarak’s resignation on February 11, 2011. She was working with a producer, cameraman, interpreter, and security professional.

According to CBS’s account, Logan’s interpreter heard threatening comments in the crowd and warned the team. Before they could leave, several hundred men surrounded Logan and the group. The crowd separated her from her colleagues and security personnel.
Logan later told Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes that she believed she was dying. She described being beaten and sexually assaulted for approximately 25 minutes. CBS used the phrase “brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating” in its public description of the incident. ABC’s contemporaneous reporting quoted Logan as saying that the attackers raped her with their hands and that the assault lasted about half an hour.
These accounts describe a serious and violent attack without establishing the identity, motives, or affiliations of every person in the crowd. It would be inaccurate and unfair to turn the documented assault into a claim about Egyptians, Muslims, or any other broad national or religious group.
The rescue and medical aftermath
Logan said that Egyptian women intervened during the assault. About 20 Egyptian soldiers then helped rescue her, according to the CBS reporting, and returned her and the rest of the news team to their hotel.

A doctor examined Logan at the hotel. She flew back to the United States the following day and was hospitalized for four days. In the later 60 Minutes follow-up, she discussed her fear, recovery, and the supportive letters she received after speaking publicly.
The rescue is an important part of the account. The assault took place amid a rapidly changing political situation and a large public celebration, but the people who helped Logan were Egyptian civilians and soldiers. The facts do not support assigning collective responsibility to an entire population.
Why Logan spoke about the attack on 60 Minutes
CBS broadcast Logan’s first televised account on May 1, 2011. She said she chose to speak partly to support other survivors of sexual assault and female journalists who work in dangerous environments.
The interview also made the risks of reporting in mass gatherings more visible. Logan had not been covering a conventional battlefield. She was reporting on a historic political transition in a public square filled with celebrating people. Yet the crowd, its size, the threatening atmosphere, and the difficulty of extracting one person from it created a potentially deadly security situation.

A May 6, 2011, 60 Minutes Overtime follow-up focused on the rescue, Logan’s hospitalization and recovery, and the response from viewers. CBS said that other reporters had also been assaulted during the Egyptian uprising, although Logan’s case received exceptional attention because of her prominence and the severity of her account.
Why the language around the assault matters
There are two related but distinct issues: what Logan said happened to her, and how news organizations chose to describe it.
- In 2011, CBS described the event as a violent sexual assault and beating. ABC published a contemporaneous account that included Logan’s description of rape with hands.
- In 2020, Logan gave more detailed descriptions and said she had been raped repeatedly and sodomized. Those details should be attributed to Logan’s own account rather than presented as independently established findings by the sources reviewed.
- Terminology does not by itself settle the facts. The difference between “sexual assault” and “rape” reflects the speaker, the publication context, and the level of detail being reported. It should not be used to imply that a general description makes the underlying assault less serious.
Logan later argued that some coverage, including a New York Magazine article, reduced the event to “groping.” The publisher reportedly said the article had been vetted and stood by its reporting. Logan connected her criticism to a $25 million defamation lawsuit against New York Media. The available material establishes the filing and allegations, but not a reliable final outcome; it should not be described as won, lost, settled, or dismissed without additional verified court reporting.
What Logan’s account says about journalist safety
The case became a press-safety story because it demonstrated that danger can arise outside a declared war zone. Journalists may face serious risks in protests, celebrations, political transitions, sporting events, and other crowded environments where exits become blocked and teams can be separated.

Professional safety guidance from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Reporters Without Borders, and the Committee to Protect Journalists emphasizes preparation before deployment. The practical lessons include:
- Assess the assignment as an environment, not just a story. A peaceful-looking event can change rapidly. Consider crowd size, political tension, previous attacks on journalists, likely escape routes, transportation, and medical access.
- Make an extraction plan. The team should know who makes the decision to leave, where to regroup, which routes remain open, and what to do if one member becomes separated.
- Use reliable communications. Teams should establish check-in times, emergency contacts, backup communication methods, and a simple distress procedure before entering a crowd.
- Prepare for medical emergencies. Reporters and crews working in volatile settings may need first-aid knowledge, trauma supplies, access to medical advice, and a plan for evacuation.
- Provide hostile-environment training. Training can cover situational awareness, movement through crowds, detention, checkpoints, emergency medicine, digital security, and post-incident procedures. It cannot guarantee safety, and it should never be presented as a way to assign blame to a survivor for an attack.
- Plan for psychological support. Survivors may need confidential medical care, counseling, time away from work, legal advice, and control over when or whether they speak publicly.
For freelance reporters, documentary crews, newsroom managers, and journalism students, hostile-environment training for journalists is a practical resource to investigate alongside the OSCE, RSF, and CPJ safety guidance. The purpose is preparation—not the suggestion that equipment or training could have guaranteed Logan’s safety.

Reporting on sexual violence requires precision without turning the survivor’s trauma into spectacle. Logan’s account can be documented without repeating graphic details or speculating about the attackers’ identities. The essential facts are that she was separated from her team in Tahrir Square, described a prolonged beating and sexual assault, feared for her life, was rescued, returned to the United States, and later chose to speak publicly.
It is also important to distinguish documentation from interpretation. CBS and ABC’s 2011 reporting provides the contemporaneous public record. Logan’s later interview provides her own expanded description and her explanation of why she believed the event had been minimized. The publisher’s response to the disputed article represents a separate position. None of those distinctions diminishes the seriousness of the assault.
