When did the Netflix price increase take effect?
Netflix introduced the new prices for new members beginning March 26, 2026. Existing members were expected to receive an email roughly one month before the higher price applied to a subsequent billing cycle. That means two subscribers may see the increase on different dates, depending on their billing schedule and when Netflix sends their notice.
The increase was Netflix’s second U.S. price increase in about two years, according to CBS News’ report on the subscription fees. Netflix had also raised prices by similar amounts in January 2025 and October 2023.
What each Netflix plan includes
Standard with ads: $8.99 per month
Standard with ads is now the least expensive direct Netflix plan in the United States. It provides 1080p video, two simultaneous streams, and downloads on two supported devices. The trade-off is advertising during viewing.
Netflix says the plan is designed to show a few short ads per hour, generally around natural breaks in a program. Kids profiles do not show ads, according to Netflix’s advertising-plan information.

Licensing restrictions can make some titles unavailable; Netflix marks those titles with a lock icon. Some older devices and certain television types may also be incompatible with the ads plan, so check device support before switching.
Standard: $19.99 per month
Standard removes advertising while retaining 1080p video, two simultaneous devices, and downloads on two supported devices. It can also be eligible for one paid extra member—someone who does not live in the account holder’s household.

The price difference between Standard with ads and ad-free Standard is $11 per month before taxes. That is the key calculation for viewers deciding whether avoiding commercials is worth the additional cost.
Premium: $26.99 per month
Premium is the only listed U.S. plan with 4K Ultra HD and HDR. It supports four simultaneous devices, downloads on six supported devices, Netflix spatial audio, and up to two extra members.

Premium costs $7 more per month than Standard. The upgrade is most useful for households with a compatible 4K/HDR television or sound system, more than two people watching at once, several download devices, or a need for two extra-member slots. It is less compelling if everyone watches in 1080p and the household rarely streams on more than two devices at the same time.
How much do Netflix extra members cost?
Extra members are people who do not live in the primary account holder’s household. Each extra member gets a separate account and password, but the main subscriber pays the additional charge.
- Standard: one extra member, at $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 without ads.
- Premium: up to two extra members, at the same per-member rates.
Extra-member eligibility and pricing can vary for accounts billed through packages or third parties. The extra-member charge is separate from the plan’s base monthly price.
How much more will Netflix cost per year?
Ignoring taxes and assuming 12 months at the new rates, the annualized prices are:
- Standard with ads: $107.88 per year, up from $95.88—a $12 annual increase.
- Standard: $239.88 per year, up from $215.88—a $24 annual increase.
- Premium: $323.88 per year, up from $299.88—a $24 annual increase.
These calculations do not account for promotional pricing, taxes, package billing, or plan changes during the year.
Why is Netflix raising prices?
Netflix told TechCrunch that the increases reflect improvements to its entertainment offering and service quality. In its first-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, Netflix connected its monetization strategy with subscription plans and pricing, growth in advertising, and continued investment in content and product improvements.
Those are Netflix’s stated reasons, not an independent measurement of whether every subscriber will consider the improvements worth the higher bill. Netflix also reported that its $8.99 U.S. ad-supported plan accounted for more than 60% of sign-ups in countries where the ads plan was available during the quarter. The company said it expected approximately $3 billion in advertising revenue for 2026. Both figures come from Netflix and should be treated as company-reported results and projections.

| Want ad-free 1080p viewing | Standard | It supports two simultaneous devices and downloads on two supported devices. |
| Use a 4K/HDR setup | Premium | It is the only listed U.S. tier with 4K Ultra HD and HDR. |

Before downgrading, check whether anyone in the household uses 4K or HDR, watches simultaneously on more than two devices, downloads on several devices, uses spatial audio, or relies on extra-member slots. The balance is consumed at the rate of the plan selected on the account. A plan change, tax, or future price change can therefore affect how long the balance lasts; a gift card is a way to prepay, not a guarantee of a fixed number of months. Check the card’s terms and the account’s current price before buying.
What to do when your price-change email arrives
- Confirm the new amount. Compare the email with the plan shown in your Netflix account and remember that third-party billing may be different.
- Check your actual usage. Look at simultaneous streams, video quality, downloads, ads, and any extra members.
- Compare the downgrade savings. Standard with ads saves $11 monthly compared with Standard; Standard saves $7 monthly compared with Premium.
- Verify compatibility and titles. This is especially important before moving to the ads plan.
- Change or cancel through the correct biller. Direct Netflix subscribers should use their Netflix account; package and third-party subscribers may need to make the change with that provider.
Netflix has confirmed the current increase, but the available information does not promise that prices will remain unchanged in the future.
