Netflix did propose buying HBO Max and argued that combining the services could give customers a cheaper bundle. But Warner Bros. Discovery ended the Netflix agreement on February 27, 2026, and Netflix said it would not raise its bid. There is no Netflix–HBO Max bundle to sign up for as a result of that proposal.
As of August 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery’s proposed sale to Paramount Skydance is the relevant deal instead. It had shareholder approval, but a court challenge had delayed the closing. Any future changes to HBO Max’s ownership, packaging or price were therefore still uncertain.
What Netflix actually wanted to buy
Netflix’s December 2025 proposal covered Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming and studios businesses: HBO Max, HBO, and Warner Bros.’ film and television studios. It was not a proposal to acquire every WBD asset. WBD planned to separate its Global Linear Networks business, called Discovery Global, from the businesses Netflix sought to buy.

Those figures describe Netflix’s proposal, not Paramount Skydance’s later transaction. Netflix’s announcement outlined the assets and deal value at Netflix’s official announcement; the SEC filing describes the agreement’s covered assets at Netflix’s filing.

Why Netflix said a combined offer could cost less
Netflix’s argument was that it could sell Netflix and HBO Max together for less than the price of two separate subscriptions. A bundle discount can lower the combined price for a household that wants both services, and packaging two services may be more convenient than managing separate subscriptions. Netflix presented that possibility as a consumer benefit in the deal discussions, as reported by Android Headlines.
That was a business argument, not a price promise. The companies did not announce a final bundle name, monthly price, launch date, billing arrangement, or guarantee that existing subscribers would pay less. Nor did the proposal settle whether the services would stay in separate apps, share an app, or offer both options.

Why a bundle would not guarantee lower bills
A lower bundle price only saves a particular household money if it replaces subscriptions that household would otherwise keep paying for. If someone subscribes to HBO Max for only a few months each year, a recurring bundle could cost more than subscribing selectively. A bundle may also include a plan tier or features that do not match the customer’s current plan.
- Compare like with like: Ad-supported and ad-free plans can differ in price and features. Check the current plan terms directly with each service.
- Check how you use the services: Consider how often you watch each catalog, and whether you need features such as downloads, 4K, or multiple simultaneous streams.
- Read the billing terms: A bundle could involve a different billing provider, changed account terms, or promotional pricing that expires.
- Consider the longer-term trade-off: A merger might create convenience or a short-term discount, while reducing competition between independent services. That could weaken pressure to keep prices low over time; it does not establish what any company will charge.
Possible outcomes of a future combination could include discounted separate subscriptions, a single higher-priced service, or no bundle at all. Content could also be reorganized, and existing plan features might not carry over. None of those outcomes was finalized in the Netflix proposal.

What happened to the Netflix bid
- December 4–5, 2025: Netflix and WBD announced a proposed transaction involving Warner Bros., HBO, and HBO Max.
- January 19, 2026: The agreement was amended and restated.
- February 2026: Paramount Skydance made a superior offer.
- February 27, 2026: WBD terminated its Netflix agreement and entered into the Paramount transaction. Netflix said it would not increase its bid. The termination is documented in WBD’s SEC filing.
What the Paramount transaction means for HBO Max
WBD shareholders approved Paramount Skydance’s proposed takeover on April 23, 2026. On June 12, the U.S. Department of Justice said it had closed its antitrust investigation, concluding that the transaction was not likely to harm competition or consumers. That action did not establish a consumer price or require a particular arrangement between HBO Max and Paramount+; see the DOJ statement.
The transaction still had not closed as of the latest reported status in July 2026. A court challenge by 12 states led the companies to delay closing into 2027, according to the Associated Press. Shareholder approval and the DOJ’s decision did not remove that litigation delay. If the deal closes, HBO Max would be controlled by Paramount Skydance rather than Netflix. Whether HBO Max and Paramount+ remain separate, become a bundle, or merge into one product has not been established.

What subscribers should do now
- Do not cancel either service solely because of the old Netflix acquisition headline; the proposed deal did not combine accounts.
- Review your current subscriptions and billing separately, including any annual or promotional terms.
- Cancel services you are not using rather than waiting for a hypothetical merger discount.
- Check official service pages for current plans and availability: Netflix, HBO Max/Max, and Paramount+. Names, plans, content, and regional availability can change.
- Do not assume a future Paramount+ and HBO Max package will preserve current prices, features, or catalog access until the companies announce specific terms.
