How to watch Netflix on Zoom
1. Use the Zoom desktop app
Start with the installed Zoom desktop application on a computer. The desktop workflow provides the relevant controls for sharing an application or screen, transmitting computer audio, and optimizing video playback.

Zoom can support screen sharing through its web app in some desktop-browser situations, but mobile browsers are not a dependable way to start this setup. If possible, have the person presenting Netflix use the desktop app rather than a phone or tablet.
2. Start or join the meeting
Join the Zoom meeting and decide who will present the movie. If the host will not be the person sharing Netflix, the host must allow participants to share their screens.
The host can look for the screen-sharing permission in the meeting controls and change it from host-only sharing to allowing participants to share. The host can also control whether another participant is allowed to interrupt an existing share. The exact wording and location of these controls can vary with the Zoom version and account settings.
3. Open Netflix in a separate browser window
Open Netflix in a browser window, choose the movie or episode, and pause it at the point where everyone is ready to begin. Do not assume that one browser works universally: playback and screen sharing can vary by operating system, browser version, hardware acceleration, graphics drivers, and protected-content implementation.

4. Share the Netflix window
- In Zoom, click Share Screen.
- Select the browser window containing Netflix.
- Prefer sharing the specific browser window over sharing the entire desktop.
- Turn on Share sound.
- If the film will play full screen, enable Optimize for video sharing.
- Click Share or Start, depending on the Zoom interface.
Sharing a specific application reduces the risk of exposing notifications, private conversations, or other open material. Sharing the entire desktop is useful only when the browser window cannot be selected or when you deliberately need to switch between multiple applications.
5. Check picture and sound before starting
Start playback and ask one participant to confirm that they can see the picture and hear the movie. This quick check can reveal a missing audio setting or black-screen problem before the group settles in.
Keep the Zoom controls accessible. The presenter may need to pause the movie, stop sharing, select a different window, or change an audio setting during playback.

Why do viewers see a black screen?
A successful Netflix playback window for the presenter does not guarantee that the video will be relayed cleanly to Zoom participants. Some viewers may see a black or blank video area while the presenter can watch normally. This can result from the interaction between Netflix’s protected playback, the browser, the operating system, hardware acceleration, the graphics stack, and Zoom’s screen-sharing path.
There are two different problems, and they should be diagnosed separately.

Case 1: Netflix is black for the presenter too
If the movie is black or fails to play on the presenter’s own screen, this is primarily a Netflix playback problem rather than a Zoom-sharing problem. Work through Netflix’s normal playback and black-screen troubleshooting for the device, browser, display connection, and account.
Check the following:
- Can Netflix play normally when Zoom is not running?
- Does the problem affect only one title or every title?
- Is the browser, operating system, or display connection showing an error?
- Does the issue remain after restarting the browser and computer?
Case 2: Netflix plays for the presenter but viewers see black
This points more strongly to the screen-sharing path. Try these non-invasive checks:
- Stop sharing and select the actual Netflix browser window again.
- Confirm that Share sound is enabled.
- Try sharing the browser window rather than a cropped portion of the screen.
- Confirm that the presenter is using the current Zoom desktop application.
- Restart Zoom and the browser, then test with a short clip or title before the scheduled watch.
- Check whether the problem changes when the browser is not in full-screen mode.
- If the group still receives a black video area, switch to a synchronized watch-party method instead of repeatedly changing browser or DRM-related settings.
There is no responsible universal toggle that fixes every Netflix-on-Zoom black screen. Avoid capture utilities, DRM workarounds, or instructions intended to defeat content protection. They can create technical, security, and terms-of-use problems without reliably improving the group’s viewing experience.
What internet and audio equipment do you need?
Zoom meetings require an internet connection, speakers, and a microphone. The presenter needs a way to hear the movie and communicate with the group; built-in, USB, and Bluetooth audio devices can all be suitable. A webcam is optional for the movie itself. Use one only if participants want to keep their cameras on while discussing the film.
Video playback is more demanding than sharing a document. Full-frame-rate content can use substantially more bandwidth, and every participant’s experience may differ. A presenter may see smooth playback while one or more viewers experience buffering, dropped frames, or delayed sound.

- Prefer a stable broadband connection for the presenter.
- Close unrelated high-load applications and unnecessary browser tabs.
- Ask participants to turn off or reduce incoming participant video if the meeting becomes choppy.
- Use a wired connection when it is practical, especially if Wi-Fi is already congested.
- Do not expect a faster headset, webcam, HDMI cable, or adapter to solve a protected-content black screen.
Optional: USB headset with microphone
A USB headset with microphone can make conversation clearer and give the presenter convenient control over microphone pickup during a group watch. It is an optional meeting accessory—not a requirement for Netflix playback and not a fix for black-screen errors, buffering, or synchronization.

Zoom screen sharing versus Teleparty
If the purpose is simply to talk while one person presents a browser window, Zoom may be convenient. If the purpose is synchronized playback, a dedicated Netflix watch-party extension may be more appropriate.
Teleparty advertises synchronized Netflix playback and group chat. Its general workflow is to install the compatible extension or app, open a Netflix title, create a party, and send the party link to the group. Participants generally need their own access to the relevant streaming service and compatible Teleparty software. Supported devices and services can vary, so check compatibility before planning the event.

Using Zoom alongside a separate synchronization method is possible, but it adds complexity. The movie may need to be started independently, and the two services will not necessarily remain synchronized. A short test with the exact devices and accounts is worthwhile.

Before sharing, close private tabs, messaging applications, account pages, and payment screens. Disable desktop notifications if they could appear over the movie. Confirm that the selected share is the Netflix window—not an email inbox or a Netflix account-management page.

Use a private meeting invitation and the host’s preferred security controls. Zoom does not allow a host to monitor a participant’s screen unless that participant chooses to share it, so each person should share only what they intend to show.
Netflix accounts are intended for personal, non-commercial use. A private group watch is not the same as obtaining permission for a public or commercial screening. Do not record, redistribute, rebroadcast, or present the movie to an unauthorized public audience. For a public event, obtain the appropriate rights rather than treating Zoom screen sharing as permission.

Can I watch Netflix on Zoom from a phone?

Why can I hear Netflix but only see a black screen?
