If Netflix freezes, buffers, closes unexpectedly, or will not load on your TV, start by checking whether the problem is limited to Netflix. If the TV’s menus and other apps work, focus on Netflix, its stored data, updates, and the connection to Netflix. If the entire TV or streaming device freezes, restart the hardware and check its software or condition instead.
Try the fixes below in order, from a full restart to more disruptive steps. Menu names differ by TV brand, model, region, and software version. Avoid a factory reset unless the manufacturer recommends it: it can erase settings, apps, and Wi-Fi details.
First, identify what is failing

Test Netflix on a phone or computer connected to the same home network, then try another streaming service on the TV. You can also check Netflix’s official Help Center for service information. If Netflix fails across several devices, wait and retry before resetting the TV; one device’s failure alone does not establish a service outage.

8 fixes for Netflix on a TV
1. Fully restart the TV or streaming device
A remote’s power button may put a TV into standby rather than clear its temporary state. A complete power cycle is a better first test.
- Turn off the TV or streaming device.
- Unplug it from power. If the TV has a physical power button, press it once while unplugged.
- Leave it unplugged for at least 15 seconds. If the problem persists, Netflix also suggests longer refresh options, such as waiting one minute after pressing the power button or leaving the TV unplugged for three minutes.
- Reconnect power, turn the device on, and try Netflix.
For Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, and similar players, disconnect their power cable if they have one and leave them off for at least 15 seconds before restarting. If your TV has no physical power button, unplugging it is the practical full-power-cycle option. See Netflix’s TV and streaming-device troubleshooting.
If it still fails: Restart your modem and router next. If the entire TV remains frozen outside Netflix, see Fix 8.
2. Restart the modem and router
This can clear a temporary home-network problem. It will not fix a faulty Ethernet cable or a failing router port, but it is a low-risk check.
- Turn off the TV or streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
- Wait about one minute, or until the connection lights stabilize; some equipment takes longer.
- Turn on the TV or device and test Netflix.
Netflix includes a network restart in its troubleshooting guidance. If the TV uses Ethernet and the problem continues, inspect the cable and try another router port if available.

If it still fails: Compare Netflix on another device on the same network and check connection stability.
3. Check whether the connection is stable
Repeated buffering or pauses often point to a weak or inconsistent connection, not necessarily a broken Netflix app. Run Fast.com on a device using your home network. Netflix recommends it because it checks the connection to Netflix’s service. A good speed result is useful, but it does not rule out intermittent drops, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss, or DNS problems. See Netflix’s guidance on connection speed and buffering.
- Test Netflix on another device connected to the same network.
- Move the router closer to the TV when practical, and reduce obstacles or interference.
- If the TV has an Ethernet port, test a wired connection. Ethernet can help isolate Wi-Fi problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- If practical, test briefly with a phone hotspot. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a recommended permanent connection.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and game updates while testing.
Do not rely on one speed-test result or an unverified universal speed threshold: playback can still fail when a connection is unstable, even if its measured speed looks high.
If Netflix works on other devices but not the TV: Continue with the TV app and software fixes below. If several devices fail on the home network: contact your ISP if restarting the network does not help.
4. Sign out of Netflix, then sign back in
Signing out and back in can refresh account and app information stored on the device. Try this after the less disruptive restart and network checks; you will need your Netflix sign-in details.

On many TV versions of Netflix, open the app and press Back to show its menu. If the menu is at the top, move left to the profile icon. Choose Get Help, then Sign out and confirm. If an error screen appears, select More Details, then Sign out or Reset if offered. The exact options vary by device and app version.

If Get Help or Sign out is missing, Netflix documents this remote sequence on some devices: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. Then choose Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate, if shown. Use Netflix’s device troubleshooting steps if the menus differ.
If it still fails: Check for an app or system update. Do not change your plan or password merely because Netflix works on other devices but not this TV.
5. Update Netflix and the TV or streaming device
An app update and a device software update are different things. Check both if the platform allows it:
- Netflix app: Some TVs update apps automatically; others have an app store or an app-management screen where you can check for updates.
- TV or player software: Look under Settings, Support, System, or About for a software or firmware update. Labels vary by manufacturer.
- Router software: Consider it if other network functions are also unstable, following the router maker’s instructions.
For example, Netflix’s Sony Android TV instructions describe opening Home, selecting Apps, opening Play Store, scrolling to My Apps, and updating Netflix if an update is available. That path applies to the specified interface, not every Sony TV. Do not install unofficial firmware or sideload Netflix; unsupported methods can introduce security and compatibility problems.

If there is no update, or updating does not help: Try the app’s supported reset, clear-data, or reinstall option.
6. Reset, reinstall, or clear Netflix app data
The available option depends on the device. Resetting app data or reinstalling may sign you out and remove locally stored app information or downloads, so have your Netflix password and Wi-Fi credentials available first.
- Apple TV: Highlight Netflix on the Home screen, press and hold the center of the touch surface or clickpad ring until the icon wiggles, press Play/Pause, then choose Delete. Open the App Store, search for Netflix, and install it again.
- Roku: Remove the Netflix channel and add it again.
- Fire TV: Use the device’s app-management menu to reinstall Netflix if that option is available.
- Android or Google TV: Depending on the model, clear Netflix’s cache or data, or uninstall and reinstall the app.
- Other smart TVs: Check the app-management menu for a reset or reinstall option. Some models offer only a Netflix reset or sign-out.
Follow the relevant device instructions in Netflix’s troubleshooting guide. If the TV offers no app repair option, do not substitute a factory reset without considering what settings and apps you would lose.
If the app still fails: Check for VPN, proxy, or custom DNS settings, then confirm the device is supported.
7. Restore default network settings if you use a VPN, proxy, or custom DNS
Changed connection settings can interfere with a TV or player reaching Netflix. If you or someone in your household changed modem, VPN, proxy, or DNS settings, temporarily restore the device and router to their automatic or default settings, then test again. Netflix specifically flags these settings as possible connection complications on devices such as Fire TV.

Do not change DNS servers casually or copy values from an unknown source. A school, hotel, workplace, parental-control service, or managed network may intentionally restrict access; ask its administrator before changing settings. Netflix’s advanced troubleshooting identifies addresses such as secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com that may need to be reachable. If default settings do not help: Check the exact device model’s Netflix support and contact the appropriate provider if the network is managed or several devices are affected.
8. Check device support, heat, and hardware problems
Netflix may no longer be available on some TVs or TV-connected devices made before 2015, but age alone does not prove a particular model is unsupported. Check the exact model against Netflix’s supported TVs and streaming devices; availability can vary by model and region.

- Check whether the exact TV or player is supported and whether its manufacturer offers a current software update.
- See whether other apps and the TV menus work normally.
- Note overheating warnings, unusually sluggish menus, random reboots, or failures outside Netflix.
- Contact the manufacturer for model-specific firmware, app hub, factory-reset, or hardware troubleshooting.
Netflix directs users to the manufacturer when device-specific firmware, Smart Hub, reset, or hardware/software issues are involved. A factory reset can erase apps, settings, Wi-Fi credentials, and account information, so treat it as a last resort and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. - “Netflix is Currently Unavailable”: Netflix says this commonly indicates that the app needs an update or a network problem is preventing the device from reaching Netflix. See its error guidance.
- UI-800-3: Netflix associates this with stale information stored on the device or a network issue. Restart the device and home network, then try signing out and back in. Check Netflix’s UI-800-3 guidance.
- UI-113: Possible causes include device data, network connectivity, or an unsupported device. The model and software version matter. See Netflix’s UI-113 guidance.
- “Netflix has encountered an error”: If other apps also fail or the TV reports a network error, investigate the device’s internet connection. Netflix recommends manufacturer or ISP assistance for device-specific connection problems. See its error guidance.
Record the complete error code, including any numbers or text in parentheses. A short code alone may not identify the exact problem or the right device-specific remedy.
When an external streaming device makes sense
Consider an external streamer only after checking support and trying the relevant app and software fixes. It may be a practical workaround if the TV’s Netflix app is no longer supported, the TV cannot receive updates, its built-in app environment remains unusably slow, or Netflix keeps crashing after a restart, sign-in refresh, app repair, and firmware check. A device that connects through HDMI can give an older TV a newer app platform, provided the TV has a usable HDMI input.
A streamer will not fix a poor internet connection, an account-access problem, a Netflix-wide outage, network restrictions, or a faulty HDMI port, power supply, or display. If the whole TV freezes or other apps fail too, diagnose the TV or network before buying another device.

- Netflix works on other devices, but not this TV: Focus on that TV’s app, stored data, software, and support status.
- Other apps fail on the TV too: Check its connection and software; contact the manufacturer if the device itself is failing.
- Netflix fails on several devices on the home network: Check for service information, restart the network, and contact your ISP if the problem persists.
- The device is unsupported or cannot update: An external streamer may be a lower-disruption alternative to replacing the TV.
- The device freezes or reboots after updates and troubleshooting: Stop repeating Netflix fixes and contact the manufacturer about hardware or system software.
