If the app you miss is Netflix, it stopped working on PlayStation 3 on March 2, 2026. Sony says Netflix is no longer supported or available on the console. The PS3 is not entirely offline, though: Google still lists YouTube as a supported device, while reports that Amazon Prime Video works are not backed by current first-party confirmation. For Netflix and a dependable range of current streaming apps, an external streaming device is the practical fix.
What still works on PS3?

Netflix ended on PS3 on March 2, 2026
Sony’s PlayStation service notice says Netflix is no longer supported or available on PS3. This is a service-specific shutdown, not a switch that turned off every PS3 network feature.

Sony’s notice gives this removal path: highlight Netflix, press Triangle, then select Delete. Do not delete it as a troubleshooting experiment if you are hoping to reinstall it later: Sony says the app is no longer available to download on PS3. Keeping the icon will not restore access, either.
YouTube is the clearest supported alternative
Google’s supported-device list currently includes PlayStation 3. That is the strongest verified direct streaming option for the console, but it is not a guarantee that every PS3 model, region, account, or app installation will work indefinitely. YouTube is also not a Netflix-equivalent catalog: it is useful for free creator videos, music, trailers, some live streams, and eligible rentals or purchases.

To watch a YouTube movie or show you already purchased:
- Buy or rent it on a computer or supported mobile device; Google says purchases cannot be made directly on game consoles.
- Sign in to the same Google account in the PS3 YouTube app.
- Open Library → Your Movies & Shows → Purchased.
Google documents PS3 playback for purchased content in its YouTube purchase instructions. Actual picture quality depends on the title, connection, account, and app; Google’s quality guidance lists PS3 among devices capable of HD playback.

If YouTube is already installed
On the PS3 XMB, look under TV/Video Services or Video—the layout can differ. Open YouTube, complete its sign-in process if needed, and try a free video first. If you are checking a purchase, use the Library path above.

What about Prime Video and other old PS3 apps?
Some PS3 owners report that Amazon Prime Video still works for them. The evidence available here does not establish current Amazon support across regions or models, so treat it as a possibility to test—not a dependable Netflix replacement. Do not buy a PS3 on the assumption that Prime Video will be available.
Several once-familiar apps are no longer sound recommendations. Sony lists Spotify as unavailable since July 7, 2023, and says Pluto TV and Twitch are no longer available on PS3. Plex announced the end of PS3 support effective March 24, 2023 in its support notice. Hulu and Crunchyroll are also commonly described as discontinued on PS3, but there is no basis here to give either a precise shutdown date. Old app lists online often mix historical availability with what works now.

Why the PS3 browser is not a Netflix workaround
A web browser is not a reliable substitute for a discontinued television app. Modern streaming depends on current browser capabilities, digital-rights systems, codecs, certificates, and the service provider’s approval. The PS3 browser does not make Netflix support return, and there is no dependable promise that a service’s website will stream correctly on it. Unofficial apps or modified-console methods are unsupported and can bring security, stability, licensing, and account risks; they are not a practical consumer fix.
Choose a replacement that fits your television
If you want Netflix and other current services, a basic streaming stick or player is usually a simpler and cheaper streaming solution than replacing the television or buying a game console just for video. Roku and Fire TV devices are common general-purpose options; Apple TV 4K is a premium choice, particularly for households invested in Apple devices. Check the exact model, country-specific app availability, and current price before buying. A PS4 or PS5 makes more sense if you also want a PlayStation gaming system, not just a streaming box.

- Check the inputs: Most current sticks and boxes require HDMI. A PS3’s ability to connect to a CRT or older television with legacy cables does not mean an HDMI streaming device will connect directly.
- For a CRT or non-HDMI TV: You may need a compatible powered HDMI-to-component or HDMI-to-composite converter. Check the television’s inputs, supported resolution, audio path, and HDCP compatibility first; converters vary and can cause scaling, sound, or protected-video problems.
- Check the setup: Confirm an available HDMI port, power outlet, usable Wi-Fi at the TV, remote-control needs, and whether you actually need 4K or HDR.
- Budget for subscriptions separately: A streaming device provides access to apps; it does not include a Netflix or other paid-service membership.

The PS3 still has uses beyond streaming
Losing Netflix does not make the console useless. It can still serve as a game system, Blu-ray and DVD player, and a way to play compatible local media. YouTube is currently the strongest verified streaming survivor, but provider decisions—not the PS3 itself—determine whether any app keeps working.
The wider direction is toward less legacy support. Sony’s Store update schedules closures in selected countries during 2026 and in other countries for July 2027. That concerns new Store purchases; Sony says previously purchased content should remain downloadable for the foreseeable future, which is not a permanent guarantee. It is another reason not to build a long-term streaming setup around PS3 apps.
