Netflix accounts are for one Netflix Household: the people and devices associated with the main place the account is used. Netflix still supports temporary use away from home, including travel, hotel TVs and a second home. But a person who lives elsewhere needs a supported paid extra-member slot or their own account; having a profile or the password does not make them part of the household.
What Netflix means by a household
Netflix defines a Netflix Household around the main internet connection and viewing location where the account is used. Netflix says it associates devices using signals that include IP addresses, device IDs and account activity; it does not use GPS to determine a device’s precise physical location.

People who live together can use separate profiles on one account. Netflix allows up to five profiles, but profiles are for organizing viewing—not authorizing people who live in another household. Knowing the account password or having a profile labelled “Family” does not change that distinction.

Netflix’s documented responses can include verification prompts, temporary access codes, household updates or account/device management. The exact prompt can vary; do not assume every outside-household sign-in leads to the same penalty or automatic cancellation. Travel is still supported—but it is not a second permanent household
Household members can watch Netflix on phones, tablets and computers while away, and can sign in on a TV at a hotel or vacation rental. Netflix also describes use at a second home or a frequently visited location. These are supported forms of temporary or account-owner use, not a blanket exemption for someone who permanently lives elsewhere.
For a second home or frequent destination, Netflix says to connect to the main household’s internet, open Netflix on a mobile device or visit Netflix.com on a computer, and stream a title for a few seconds. Repeat this after arriving at the second location. Netflix recommends doing this once a month to help maintain uninterrupted access. For a student away at college or a household member who travels often, this monthly home connection is the first option to try. It may not prevent every verification request. A friend, adult child, roommate or partner who permanently lives elsewhere should use an extra member or a separate account instead.
What to do when Netflix says a device is not part of the household
At home: update the household from the main TV
Only update the household from the home internet connection you intend to be the account’s main location—not from a hotel, office, public hotspot or temporary rental. From the Netflix home screen on a TV:

- Press Back on the remote (or Menu on Apple TV).
- Open the profile icon or the side menu, depending on the interface, then select Get Help or Settings.
- Select Manage Netflix Household, then Update Netflix Household.
- Choose Send Email or, where available, Send Text.
- Open the message, select Yes, This Was Me, then Confirm Update.
Netflix says the update takes about eight minutes, and the email verification link expires after 15 minutes. If the household option is missing, Netflix says to try a different TV device. See the household update instructions.
At home: a phone or computer is blocked
Connect the phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi network as a TV or streaming device associated with the household. If the error remains, update the household from the TV, then restart the Netflix app or refresh the browser. Different home Wi-Fi networks, a guest network or a different internet provider can lead Netflix to request verification.

Away from home: use the temporary travel option
On the error screen at a hotel, vacation rental or other temporary location, choose I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily and request a code. Netflix’s temporary code is four digits and expires after 15 minutes. Enter it on the affected device; start the process from a non-Kids profile.

Choose the right option for someone who lives elsewhere

Extra member: Netflix generally offers this on eligible Standard or Premium plans in many countries. It is not available on ad-supported plans or some partner-billed and Netflix-included packages. The extra member must activate in the same country where the account owner created the account. The extra member has a separate login and one profile; this is different from adding a normal household profile. Availability and price vary, so check the account’s current plan and billing route rather than relying on a price quoted for another country or package. Start with Netflix’s extra-member details.
Separate account: This is the clearest fit when the person lives elsewhere permanently, needs independent account control, or cannot use an extra-member slot. Netflix’s Profile Transfer information says recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games and settings may be transferred to a new account.
Second homes, moves and unusual setups
- A second home occupied by the account owner: Follow Netflix’s monthly main-home connection guidance. Because Netflix does not publish a universal exemption for every vacation-home setup, do not assume it permits unrelated people to use the account there year-round.
- A hotel stay or sign-in at someone else’s home may have changed the apparent household: Review signed-in devices, sign out unfamiliar ones (or use Sign out of All Devices), then update the household again from the preferred home TV and internet. Change the password if you suspect unauthorized access. Netflix lists recent hotel use or another person’s home as possible causes of household trouble.
- Moved within the same country: You may need to update the Netflix Household from the new main home.
- Moved to a different country: Netflix says to cancel the existing membership and sign up again in the new country. Pricing, payment methods, billing currency and available titles or languages can differ. See Netflix’s moving guidance.
- Carrier-, cable- or other partner-billed account: Extra members may not be available through that package. Check with the billing provider or Netflix account page before changing plans.
- Phone works but TV does not: Netflix’s household flow can treat TVs and streaming devices differently. Try the home-network steps above rather than assuming the whole account is blocked.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm whether the person is temporarily away or permanently lives outside the household.
- If at home, connect to the intended main Wi-Fi and use the household update flow from the main TV.
- Check the account’s signed-in devices; sign out unfamiliar devices and reset the password if access is unauthorized.
- If traveling, choose the temporary access option and enter the code promptly. Avoid repeated failed attempts.
- If the user lives elsewhere, check whether the plan, country and billing method support an extra member; otherwise create a separate account.
If you cannot access the email address or phone number needed for verification, the published household-update flow cannot be completed through that channel. First confirm that the contact details are yours and accessible; use Netflix’s account recovery or support route for help rather than updating the household from an unintended location.
