The BBC reversed its decision on Saturday, June 28, 2025, confirming that Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts’ Glastonbury headline performance would be broadcast live after all. The announcement came only hours before Young was due on the Pyramid Stage, one day after the broadcaster had said it would not show the set at the artist’s request.
The BBC changed its position hours before the performance
On Friday, June 27, the BBC said it would not broadcast Neil Young’s Glastonbury headline set. Its public explanation was limited: the decision had been made “at the artist’s request.”
The following day, Saturday, June 28, the broadcaster announced that it was “delighted to confirm” the performance would be broadcast live after all. The change was made only hours before Young and the Chrome Hearts were scheduled to take the Pyramid Stage.
The reversal was significant because Young had previously raised concerns about Glastonbury’s corporate and broadcast arrangements. Contemporary reporting connected an earlier withdrawal threat with his criticism of the BBC relationship. However, the public record does not establish the precise reason for the reversal, nor does it confirm the details of any private negotiations, contract terms, fee, or settlement. The clearest documented sequence is simply that the BBC first cited the artist’s request and later confirmed the live broadcast.

Where the Glastonbury performance was shown
The BBC’s revised plan placed Young’s set on the iPlayer Pyramid Stage stream from 10 p.m. UK time. It was also scheduled for simultaneous coverage on BBC Two and BBC Radio 2.
Those details describe the confirmed UK broadcast arrangements. They should not be treated as proof that the stream was officially available worldwide. The BBC also said its on-demand plans were still being finalized when the reversal was announced, so the live broadcast should be distinguished from any later replay or permanent availability on BBC iPlayer. A current iPlayer listing would be needed before claiming that the full performance remains available.

Why the broadcast dispute drew attention
The controversy was not only about whether viewers would be able to watch one festival set. Young’s concerns about the event’s commercial structure and its relationship with the BBC had already made the appearance politically and symbolically complicated.
That context helps explain why the broadcast decision attracted so much attention, but it does not justify filling in facts that were never publicly confirmed. There is no substantiated basis here for claiming that Young reversed his position because of a particular concession, payment, contract clause, or dispute settlement. The BBC’s two public statements are the reliable anchors: first, no broadcast at the artist’s request; then, a live broadcast confirmed the next day.

The set drew on several eras of Young’s career, from “Sugar Mountain,” “Old Man,” and “Harvest Moon” to “Cinnamon Girl,” “Like a Hurricane,” and “Rockin’ in the Free World.” For listeners discovering or revisiting the studio catalog, Neil Young’s Harvest on vinyl is a natural place to start. That release is a catalog-recording recommendation only; it should not be confused with an official release of the 2025 Glastonbury performance.
