NCIS reached its 1,000-episode franchise milestone on April 15, 2024, with the flagship series’ “A Thousand Yards.” The count combined episodes from five NCIS shows; it was not the 1,000th episode of the original series alone. An Entertainment Weekly interview listing dated that day identifies Brian Dietzen as discussing the milestone, but the available listing does not include his remarks, so no specific reaction or quotation can be reliably attributed to him here.
What the 1,000-episode milestone counted
The milestone was a combined total of aired episodes across five series: NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai’i and NCIS: Sydney. CBS described it as the franchise’s 1,000th original episode. The milestone installment itself belonged to the flagship NCIS: season 21, episode 7, which aired April 15, 2024.
What happened in “A Thousand Yards”
The episode’s title refers to the series’ milestone, while its story turns toward the show’s past. A mysterious enemy attacks NCIS, and Director Leon Vance attempts to repair his relationship with his estranged son. The episode also brought in Daniela Ruah and Vanessa Lachey, linking the celebration to other corners of the franchise.
How the episode honored the franchise
Executive producers David North and Steven D. Binder framed the installment as a tribute to the flagship series and the shows it inspired. North called it “a tribute to not just this NCIS, the OG NCIS, but all the series that have been launched.” Binder said the episode included visual and auditory Easter eggs for longtime viewers, adding, “We really wanted to capture the history from episode one on up.”
