Spoilers for the ending. Macondo is destroyed by a hurricane as Aureliano Babilonia finishes deciphering Melquíades’ parchments. The final Buendía child is carried off by ants, and Aureliano discovers that the manuscript has recorded the family’s history—including its ending—in advance. The town is not left waiting for a new beginning: its destruction and the family’s extinction become final together.
What happens in the final pages?
After Amaranta Úrsula dies, Aureliano sees the newborn child being carried toward the ants’ holes. The baby has the pig’s tail that the family had feared for generations. Aureliano recognizes the parchment’s epigraph: “The first of the line is tied to a tree and the last is being eaten by the ants.”
He returns to Melquíades’ parchments and reads them. As he deciphers the text, Aureliano learns that it contains the Buendía family’s story, including his own parentage and the incestuous relationship that produced the child. Wind rises around him while he reads; it becomes a cyclone that turns Macondo into dust and rubble. Aureliano understands that the town will disappear when he reaches the end of the manuscript.
What do Melquíades’ parchments reveal?
The parchments are more than an ambiguous prophecy. The narration describes them as a detailed record of the family’s history, written a century in advance and encoded in Sanskrit and multiple ciphers. Their final revelation links Aureliano’s private discovery to Macondo’s fate: the family’s past, present, and ending are all contained in the manuscript.

The order of the parchment’s events also unsettles ordinary chronology. Aureliano reads one passage after another, but the story describes the events as coexisting in a single instant. The act of reading does not create a chance to alter what is written; it brings the already recorded history to its completion.
Why is Macondo destroyed?
Literally, the ending depicts a hurricane destroying the town as Aureliano finishes reading. The text makes the timing inseparable: Macondo is swept away at the moment its history is completely deciphered. It is not simply abandoned or left as ruins. Its fate is described as erasure and exile from human memory, with no second chance for the Buendía line.

The reason to distinguish plot from interpretation is that the physical destruction is explicit, while the hurricane’s broader symbolic meaning is open to critical reading. A scholarly discussion of the ending treats the wind as literal destruction while also considering metaphorical interpretations. It reads the closure as unusually complete: Aureliano’s life, the family, Macondo, and the century end together. Those are critical approaches, not a single settled explanation of authorial intent.

- History and prophecy: The parchments anticipate events, then prove to be a complete record of the family’s history.
- Reading and simultaneity: Aureliano deciphers the story in sequence, while its events are presented as existing together in one instant.
- Closure, not another cycle: The final child dies and Macondo is erased; the ending does not promise a renewed Buendía family or a rebuilt town.
- Literal event and symbolism: The hurricane destroys Macondo in the narrative. Readers and critics may also consider what the wind signifies beyond that event.
The ending’s force comes from those strands converging: the last child fulfills the epigraph, Aureliano discovers the history that explains his place in the line, and the town vanishes as he reaches its final words.
