If NBC will not open, play video, activate, or recognize your TV provider on Roku, first check whether other Roku apps work. If they do, focus on the NBC app, provider sign-in, or the specific program; if they do not, check the Roku’s network connection. Work through the fixes below in order before considering new hardware. This guide covers the NBC app on Roku in the United States—not NBC reception through an antenna or cable box.
Quick order: Test another Roku app, check the network, update and restart the app and Roku, relink your TV provider if needed, then remove and reinstall NBC. For activation, use only NBC’s official activation page. A reinstall cannot make an ineligible subscription or unavailable program accessible.
First, identify what is failing
- NBC will not open, freezes, or crashes: Start with app and Roku updates and a restart. If that fails, reinstall NBC.
- NBC opens, but video buffers, freezes, or stays black: Try another NBC title and another Roku app. If other apps play normally, the problem may be NBC-specific, tied to sign-in, or limited to that title.
- “Not authorized” or “not in your subscription package”: Check that your TV plan includes NBC and that NBC is signed in to the right provider account.
- Activation code fails: Generate a fresh code and enter it on a phone or computer at an official NBC activation address—not on an unrelated activation site.
- NBC says it is unavailable in your location: Try Wi-Fi instead of cellular internet, and check whether a VPN or unusual network location is affecting location verification. This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Only one episode or program is missing: The app may be working while that item is locked, expired, or otherwise unavailable.
- NBC and other Roku apps fail: Check the Roku’s network and device before troubleshooting NBC alone.
These instructions apply to the NBC app, not automatically to separate apps such as NBC Sports, CNBC, or Peacock. Confirm the app name on the Roku Home screen.

Open another service, such as YouTube or The Roku Channel, then try a different program in NBC. If several apps fail, investigate the Roku or home network. If other apps work but NBC does not, concentrate on NBC’s app data, provider authentication, account eligibility, or a service-side problem. If only one NBC title fails, it may be a content-availability issue rather than a broken app. Roku recommends comparing titles and apps before assuming the device is at fault (Roku playback troubleshooting).

2. Check the Roku’s internet connection
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Go to Settings > Network > About and confirm the device is connected.
- Choose Check connection, if that option appears.
If the connection test fails or streaming is unreliable, restart your router: unplug it from power, wait 10 seconds, reconnect it, and allow it to restart. You can also reduce simultaneous streaming or large downloads, move the Roku closer to the router, reconnect it to Wi-Fi, or try a wired connection if your Roku and network support one. A router restart is a sensible test; buying new Wi-Fi equipment is not the first step when only NBC has a problem.
3. Update NBC and Roku, then restart
Check for an NBC app update
- On the Roku Home screen, highlight NBC.
- Press the * button on the remote.
- Select Check for Updates, then reopen NBC when the check finishes.
Check Roku software
Go to Home > Settings > System > System update > Check Now. Depending on the device and software version, the menu may say Software update instead of System update.
Restart the Roku
Look under Settings > System > Power > System restart. Some Roku models do not show a Power submenu; use the available System restart option. If you cannot restart from the menu, unplug the Roku from power, wait at least 10 seconds, reconnect it, and try NBC again. Updating and restarting are low-disruption fixes to try before reinstalling the app. Roku’s app troubleshooting guidance also covers checking for updates and removing and reinstalling an app.

4. Fix provider sign-in and activation
Relink your provider if you changed TV companies, changed plans or account email, moved service addresses, see an authorization message, or NBC keeps signing into an old provider. In the NBC app, go to Home > More > My Profile > Unlink, then sign in again with the account for your current provider. Use the primary email associated with that provider account. NBC says signing out of another NBCUniversal app may also affect provider sign-in across related apps. Automatic sign-in behavior varies by provider.
For a Roku activation code, use either nbc.com/activate or, where applicable, NBCUniversal Family’s official activation page. Complete activation on a phone or computer, not by typing the address into the Roku. If the official page behaves incorrectly, try clearing the browser’s cache or site data and request a fresh code.
Do not assume that repeated activation or reinstalling will fix an account that is not eligible. NBC’s locked and live content generally requires a listed cable, satellite, or digital TV provider whose plan includes NBC; an internet-only plan is not the same as a qualifying TV subscription. Check NBC’s provider list and confirm your plan with the provider. Roku’s provider-authentication guidance also notes that package verification and provider sign-in affect access.

5. Remove and reinstall NBC if it still will not work
Reinstall only after trying updates, a restart, and provider relinking where relevant. You may need to activate and sign in again.

- Press *, choose Remove channel, and confirm.
- Restart the Roku.
- Add NBC again from the Roku Streaming Store.
- Open NBC and activate or sign in with the correct provider.
This can refresh app data, but it is not a guaranteed fix or a solution to missing subscription rights, location restrictions, or an unavailable episode. NBC’s Roku troubleshooting instructions include removing and re-adding the app, updating software, checking the connection, and re-authenticating the provider.
6. Understand authorization, location, and program availability
An app that opens successfully may still refuse particular live or locked content. Check that the selected provider and package include NBC, that the provider account is active, and that you have not changed credentials or service addresses without updating the NBC sign-in. Some providers do not support automatic single sign-on, so you may need to authenticate manually.

Location messages can be affected by the network being used. NBC recommends switching from cellular internet to Wi-Fi when a location warning appears. If you use a VPN, turning it off temporarily can help test whether the network location is interfering, but it may not resolve every location or rights restriction. Traveling outside the supported region or a provider’s home-service verification can also affect access.
Not every episode is free or available indefinitely. NBC explains that some episodes are locked behind a qualifying provider or other access method; some newly aired content may become available without a provider after a delay, and availability can expire. Check another title and NBC’s explanation of why episodes are locked before treating one missing program as an app failure.

NBC’s help page lists error examples such as noauthz, 0066, UPDA, z100, playback, failure, and retry. These labels do not all mean the same thing. Record the exact code shown and share it with support rather than guessing at its cause (NBC app loading and playback help).

Make sure this is the right NBC problem
If by “NBC channel” you mean an over-the-air broadcast on a TV antenna, the Roku app cannot repair antenna reception. Check the TV’s antenna input, coaxial cable, channel scan, and antenna placement. For cable or satellite reception, contact your TV provider. NBC separates traditional reception support from digital app support in its basic troubleshooting guidance.
When to contact NBC, your provider, or Roku
- Contact NBC for persistent problems opening the NBC app, activation, NBC playback errors, or questions about a specific title. Use the NBC support form.
- Contact your TV provider if your package, account status, credentials, or entitlement to NBC is in question.
- Contact Roku if the device, Roku software, network setup, or multiple apps are failing. Use official Roku Support.
- Contact the TV provider, local station, antenna retailer, or TV manufacturer for cable, satellite, or antenna reception issues rather than an NBC Roku app fault.
Before contacting support, gather the exact message or code; whether NBC opens, crashes, buffers, or shows a black screen; whether other apps and NBC titles work; Roku model and software version; NBC app version if visible; TV provider and package; connection type; whether NBC works on another device or NBC.com; when the issue began; and a photo or recording of the error. NBC’s support form requests platform, provider, show, issue details, errors, and attachments.
Do not buy another Roku just because NBC fails. Consider replacement only if several apps fail, the device repeatedly crashes or overheats, it cannot update, or it loses connectivity while other devices remain stable. A new device will not fix an unsupported provider, an expired episode, a location restriction, or an NBC authentication issue.
