An animated Firefly continuation was announced in March 2026, with Nathan Fillion’s Collision33 and 20th Television Animation reported as development partners. It is a real development project, but the available reports do not establish that a buyer has ordered the series or that production has begun. No platform or release date has been announced in the reporting reviewed here.
What was announced about the Firefly revival?
March 15–17, 2026 coverage described an animated continuation of Firefly, announced by Fillion and several cast members at a reunion event. The reports said the project was in development with Fillion’s Collision33 and 20th Television Animation. They also described a script and early concept art, with plans to take the project to prospective buyers.
Those details indicate active development, not a completed series order. The reports do not establish a production start, buyer, distribution platform, or release date. “Official revival” is therefore best understood as an announced project being developed, not a guarantee that episodes will be made or released.
Is Nathan Fillion returning as Mal Reynolds?
Fillion is reported as attached to the project, and the expected returning performers include him. The coverage summarized here does not independently confirm a final cast list or specify the extent of each performer’s involvement. It is reasonable to describe Fillion as expected to return, but not to treat the cast as locked.

Who is developing the animated series?
Coverage identifies Collision33, Fillion’s company, and 20th Television Animation as development partners. Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are reported as showrunners. Where does the story fit in the Firefly timeline?

That placement would let the animated project revisit the crew before the events of the film. No detailed plot synopsis or episode count has been established in the coverage summarized here.
What does “in the works for years” mean?
A March 16, 2026 Collider headline says the revival has been in the works for years. The indexed excerpt confirms the reunion announcement and notes the franchise’s history, but the full Collider exclusive could not be reviewed here. Its headline does not provide a verifiable start date, so a more precise development timeline cannot be stated on that basis.
