In Fire & Blood, Nettles escapes Rhaenyra’s order to have her killed with Daemon’s help, then disappears into the Vale’s Mountains of the Moon on Sheepstealer. Her death is never confirmed. In House of the Dragon, the show gives Sheepstealer’s claim to Rhaena Targaryen instead of introducing Nettles as a separate character.
Who is Nettles in Fire & Blood?
Nettles is a lowborn dragonseed who earns the wild dragon Sheepstealer’s trust through patience: she brings it a freshly killed sheep each morning until it accepts her. She fights for Rhaenyra during the Dance of the Dragons, including at the Battle of the Gullet, and later joins Daemon’s search for Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar. A Wiki of Ice and Fire’s account of Nettles summarizes her role in the book.
Why does Rhaenyra order Nettles killed?
After dragonseeds Hugh Hammer and Ulf betray Rhaenyra, suspicion at court turns toward other riders. Mysaria feeds Rhaenyra rumors about Nettles and Daemon. Rhaenyra orders Nettles’ head delivered, while instructing that Daemon himself not be harmed. Daemon learns of the order and warns Nettles, who escapes on Sheepstealer. The book does not establish that the rumors about their relationship were true.
Does Nettles die in Fire & Blood?
No death is confirmed. The later account places Nettles and Sheepstealer in the Vale in 134 AC. They are encountered in a cave, then fly farther into the Mountains of the Moon; no later sighting is recorded. The chronicles leave her ultimate fate unknown, rather than confirming that she died or reunited with Daemon.

The history’s account, attributed to Gyldayn, says: “High above the town, Nettles turned her dragon toward the Bay of Crabs, and vanished in the morning mists, never to be seen again at court or castle.” That means she disappears from the record—not that the book establishes what happened to her afterward. A Wiki of Ice and Fire reproduces the passage and summarizes the later report.
Was Daemon in love with Nettles?
Fire & Blood preserves conflicting accounts. Mushroom suggests Daemon and Nettles were lovers; Maester Norren instead describes Daemon doting on her “as a man might dote upon his daughter.” Because the book offers competing versions, their relationship is deliberately unresolved; neither romance nor a father-daughter bond is established as definitive.

The adaptation assigns Sheepstealer’s claim to Rhaena Targaryen rather than presenting Nettles as a separate character. Showrunner Ryan Condal said the choice suited a story told through a point of view and gave the series an opportunity to bring a Targaryen family member into the storyline. He also framed Rhaena’s achievement as a “monkey’s paw” moment: she gets the dragon she wants, but the result becomes a nightmare. ComicBook.com’s June 23, 2026 report attributes Condal’s explanation to an interview with IGN; GamesRadar+ also reports on the decision.
The book and television plotlines should not be conflated: Nettles’ flight from Rhaenyra and disappearance are events in Fire & Blood, not events that have happened to Rhaena on screen. The adaptation may continue to diverge as further episodes arrive.
