At the New York City pop-up, visitors sat at café tables with phones, stands and headphones while software companions appeared through text or video. The setup made digital romance visible; the actual conversations exposed lag, glitches, generic affection and the fundamental absence of mutual human feeling.
A café date where the partner lived in a phone
Victoria Song’s The Verge report, published February 14, 2026, describes EVA AI Café as a two-day Valentine’s-season pop-up in New York City. EVA AI promoted it as the “world’s first” AI dating café, a claim that belongs to the company rather than an independently verified historical record (The Verge; EVA AI’s event page).
The room supplied the familiar signals of a date—tables, food, drinks and décor—but not embodied robots or human performers. Guests used smartphones in stands and, in some cases, headphones. Their companions remained software displayed on screens. As of August 18, 2026, the evidence supports describing the café as a completed February pop-up, not an operating permanent location.
What the reporter actually tried
Song went on four AI dates, each built around a different persona:

The report records freezing, poor audio, latency, visual errors and speech-recognition mistakes. A question about “space” was heard as “Neptune,” and one companion repeatedly returned to irrelevant “bucket” references. Compliments about Song’s smile and being called “babe” sometimes appeared to function as default affection rather than responses grounded in what she had said. These are observations from one crowded event, not a performance guarantee—or indictment—of every EVA AI session.
Why the experience felt uncanny
The visual valley
The video characters looked deliberately human, but not fully convincing. Song describes unnaturally smooth appearances and facial rendering problems, including a nose that seemed to change or display incorrectly. A more realistic avatar can make a small rendering error more distracting, not less.
The conversational valley
The deeper problem was not appearance alone. The companions often sounded attentive while failing to track the question in front of them. Misheard words, vague answers and repeated praise produced the impression of emotional warmth without reliable conversational grounding. A system can use intimate language while still not understanding the person it addresses.
The social and emotional valley
In an ordinary dating café, both people bring a body, private history, needs and the possibility of rejection. At EVA AI Café, one side was a phone. The arrangement made that asymmetry public: a visitor could receive immediate affirmation without facing another person’s independent desires, vulnerability or accountability.

Why some attendees still liked it
The reactions were not uniformly negative. Some attendees found the event playful and novel. One valued getting relationship-like benefits without navigating the usual stages of human dating. Another treated the café as a way to observe how relationships may be changing. A more cautious participant argued that AI could support people but should not become a complete substitute for human relationships.
That split captures the product’s central trade-off. An AI partner’s lack of reciprocal demands can mean no rejection, scheduling conflict or embarrassment. The same lack means no independent life, genuine vulnerability or mutual obligation. Whether that feels liberating or hollow depends on what the user wants the interaction to do.
A publicity event, not an adoption survey
Song observed relatively few apparent ordinary users compared with EVA representatives, influencers and journalists. That is a reporter’s description of this event, not a formal attendance audit and not evidence that EVA AI has no genuine users. It does mean the café’s atmosphere was shaped by promotion and content production as well as casual experimentation.
What EVA AI is selling after the novelty
EVA AI describes itself as a “relationships RPG” and a relationship-focused companion service rather than a conventional swipe-based dating app. Its materials emphasize an always-available virtual partner, conversation, moods and storytelling (EVA AI app page; EVA AI promotional page).

The commercial model matters more than the café’s décor:
- Basic and Premium: Basic access is limited; Premium is a paid subscription.
- Billing: Premium may be offered monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. Prices vary by region, term and purchase channel.
- Neurons: The in-app currency can pay for items such as romantic-message unlocks and virtual gifts.
- Renewal and refunds: Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled through the original marketplace or website. Apple and Google purchases generally follow those marketplaces’ refund rules.
No single universal dollar price is established here. Check the live Apple App Store or Google Play purchase screen for your region before subscribing, and calculate consumable Neurons separately from the headline subscription.
What users may be giving the service
EVA AI’s privacy policy says it may process names, email addresses, age-related information, profile details, facts about a user’s life and interests, text and voice messages, images, private video and voice recordings, usage data and—when a user gives in-app consent—session recordings (EVA AI privacy policy).
The policy also describes external providers handling functions such as hosting, analytics, object recognition, image manipulation, message processing and product improvement. With consent, session recordings may be disclosed to Microsoft, and third-party retention can continue under those providers’ policies.

Practical privacy rules
- Do not upload intimate photos, identity documents, financial information or workplace secrets.
- Do not disclose another person’s private information or likeness without consent.
- Treat voice and video conversations as sensitive records, not guaranteed ephemeral talk.
- Read the current policy before enabling video, recordings or image features.
- Account deletion may not erase copies held by third parties or cached material beyond EVA AI’s control.
Who owns a character you create?
According to EVA AI’s published iOS and Android terms, the company retains ownership of generated virtual characters and virtual friends, including their likeness, personality and associated data. The terms also grant EVA AI a broad license to use, copy, process, display and distribute submitted content for operating and improving the service (iOS terms; Android terms).
In practical terms, users should not assume that a carefully developed AI girlfriend, boyfriend or friend is portable property. The legal effect can depend on jurisdiction, the material uploaded and applicable consumer or intellectual-property law.
Age, consent and content boundaries
EVA AI’s terms prohibit sexually explicit or adult-themed content, sexualization of minors, illegal or hateful material and certain deceptive or rights-infringing uses. The iOS terms say users must have the necessary rights and consent before uploading another person’s likeness, voice, identity or image. The service may block accounts believed to belong to people under 18, with an age-verification process for restoration (iOS terms; child-safety policy).
Those rules are boundaries, not a guarantee that every interaction will be perfectly moderated. Users remain responsible for what they upload and request, and the service should not be described as safe for all ages.

Is an AI companion dating, entertainment or support?
The label depends on the user’s purpose. Role-play can be entertainment. Frequent conversation can provide emotional support. A romantic persona can simulate dating. None of those categories automatically creates a mutual human relationship.
The café’s strongest lesson is therefore not that synthetic intimacy is either fake and worthless or an inevitable replacement for people. It is that commercial software can deliver convincing attention without possessing an independent stake in the relationship. Technical improvements could reduce latency and visual glitches; they cannot, by themselves, create reciprocity.
What to check before paying
- Test whether the companion answers relevant questions and remembers meaningful details rather than mainly flattering you.
- Compare text and video: video adds presence but also adds visible rendering errors and greater privacy exposure.
- Read Premium limits, Neuron prices, renewal terms and cancellation instructions before purchase.
- Review how chats, photos, recordings and analytics are processed or shared.
- Ask whether the character can be exported or recreated if the company changes access, pricing or models.
- Use age, consent and content controls, especially when another person’s likeness is involved.
- Set a boundary so the service supplements rather than quietly replaces human contact.
The reality check
Song left the event finding the interactions too one-sided and returned home wanting physical affection from her human spouse. That ending does not invalidate attendees who enjoyed the low-pressure experiment. It identifies the unresolved question: can simulated attention add something useful without making the absence of mutual human connection easier to ignore?
