Elon Musk’s June 5, 2025 post alleged that Donald Trump’s name in the Epstein files was “the real reason” they had not been made public. The post documents Musk’s accusation, not proof of its claim about Trump’s motive. The Justice Department later released records in stages, reporting a cumulative production of nearly 3.5 million pages by January 30, 2026. A separate review of reports that some responsive records were missing was still underway as of February 25, 2026.
What did Musk say about Trump and the Epstein files?
On June 5, 2025, Musk posted: “Time to drop the really big bomb. @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.” The House Judiciary Committee later reproduced the post in its report. The report establishes that Musk made the allegation; it does not establish that Trump’s name caused a delay, or that Trump directed a particular decision to withhold records. House Report 119-468
The report describes Musk as a former senior adviser to Trump and places the post amid their public falling-out. That context may help explain the political setting, but it cannot verify the accusation. A person’s name appearing in a file, contact list, or other record is not by itself evidence of criminal conduct.
Were the Epstein files released?
Yes, in phases. The Justice Department announced an initial release on February 27, 2025, and said it would review and redact remaining documents before releasing them. On January 30, 2026, DOJ said it had published over 3 million additional pages responsive to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, bringing the cumulative production to nearly 3.5 million pages. Those figures describe DOJ’s reported production, not a finding that every relevant record was included or that every person mentioned was implicated in a crime. DOJ said more than 500 attorneys and reviewers contributed to the review effort. It also cautioned that responsive material could include fake or falsely submitted images, documents, or videos because public submissions to the FBI were included in the production.
Why were some records redacted or not produced?
DOJ’s January 2026 announcement listed duplicate documents, privileged material, statutory exceptions, and items unrelated to the Act among categories not produced. The department said notable individuals and politicians were not redacted in that production. Separately, DOJ’s disclosure portal explains that some material is redacted to protect victims’ identities and private information, as well as to comply with laws, regulations, and court orders. DOJ’s February 2025 announcement said the initial phase largely consisted of material that had previously leaked but had not been formally released by the federal government. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said DOJ initially received approximately 200 pages, then learned that thousands more pages existed. What remains unresolved about missing records?
On February 25, 2026, the Associated Press reported that DOJ was reviewing claims that responsive records had been improperly withheld after news organizations reported that some FBI interview summaries were absent from the public release. DOJ said it would publish any responsive document found to have been wrongly withheld, consistent with the law. The allegation against Trump was described by AP as uncorroborated; Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing related to Epstein. The existence of an incomplete or redacted record does not, on its own, prove a cover-up or explain who made a decision and why. DOJ’s disclosure portal organizes available materials into datasets and court records, and is the department’s public access point for the released files.

How to read a name in the files
DOJ’s production may contain records of very different evidentiary value, including public submissions the department itself warned could be false. A careful reading distinguishes:

- A reference or contact entry: evidence that a name or contact detail appears in a record, not proof of a crime.
- An allegation: a claim attributed to its source, not an established finding.
- An investigative record: documentation of what investigators received or examined, which may not establish that its contents are true.
- A court finding or corroborated evidence: a different category from mere mention, and not something established simply by inclusion in the production.
The available public record therefore supports a precise conclusion: Musk made a public accusation about Trump and the timing of disclosure; DOJ released millions of pages in phases and described categories withheld or redacted; and, as of the AP report dated February 25, 2026, DOJ was reviewing claims of improperly withheld responsive records. The cited sources do not establish that Trump’s name was the reason for any delay.
