Stewart’s punchline was not that Trump had taken a regular restaurant job. It was the surreal image of a former president in an apron at a drive-through window, answering a question about the election.
What happened in the McDonald’s segment?
Trump appeared at a McDonald’s in Feasterville, Pennsylvania, during the 2024 campaign. TheWrap reported that a reporter asked him at the drive-through whether he would accept the election results “either way.” According to TheWrap’s account, Trump replied: “Yeah, sure, if it’s a fair election. Always. I would always accept it, it’s got to be a fair election.” TheWrap’s October 22, 2024 report reproduced the exchange and Stewart’s response.
The event is best described as a campaign appearance, not a regular McDonald’s job or a completed employee shift. Fox News quoted restaurant owner and operator Derek Giacomantonio describing the visit as an opportunity for Trump to observe the work experience. Giacomantonio also said, “As a small, independent business owner, it is a fundamental value of my organization that we proudly open our doors to everyone who visits the Feasterville community.” Fox News reported the owner’s framing; the coverage does not establish that Trump was hired or employed by McDonald’s.
Why did Stewart find the scene so absurd?
Stewart connected the drive-through setting to the gravity of the question. He first joked: “First of all, how dare this reporter brazenly violate the no walking through a drive thru rule?” Then he pointed to the incongruity of Trump standing at the window in a McDonald’s apron while discussing whether he would overturn the popular vote. The joke worked because a campaign photo opportunity that looked like fast-food role-play became the backdrop for an unresolved question about accepting election results.

Stewart also described the broader election atmosphere as a “fever dream,” asking: “Did we all die during COVID? And is this some strange, surreal purgatory?” These were comic lines about the disorienting spectacle of the campaign, not literal claims.
Stewart’s target was also the media’s focus
The McDonald’s image was an easy visual hook, but Stewart’s point was not simply to mock Trump’s appearance. TheWrap reported that Stewart questioned the media’s fixation on the stunt and set its bizarre optics against the more consequential election question asked at the window. Fox News likewise characterized Stewart’s remarks as criticism of media outrage over the appearance. That framing matters: the monologue made fun of the spectacle while also asking whether coverage was concentrating on the right part of the story.
