Murder in Mahim is most compelling when it looks beyond the question of who killed a man and asks what kinds of intimacy people are forced to hide. This eight-episode Hindi adaptation of Jerry Pinto’s novel brings that social and emotional dimension to a Mumbai murder investigation, though its momentum can flag when the story branches into side plots.
What is Murder in Mahim about?
The investigation begins with a body found at Mahim railway station. Police inspector Shivajirao Jende and Peter Fernandes, a former journalist, become central to the case as it reaches into the lives of queer people, sex workers and families. The series adapts Jerry Pinto’s novel of the same name, but changes and adds material rather than simply reproducing the book.
As Nandini Ramnath noted in her May 10, 2024 review for Scroll.in, the story is set before the Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling on same-sex relations. That timing gives the investigation a particular context: private lives unfold under legal and social pressure, rather than in a world where that pressure has already disappeared.
Where the series finds its force
The murder mystery gives the series a procedural spine, but its strongest material concerns the people caught up in the case. It pays attention to working-class lives and to the risks faced by men seeking intimacy in hostile conditions. That focus makes the title’s sense of injustice broader than the crime itself: the series connects a death investigation to the constraints that shape how people can live and love.
#1 Best Overall
Shubhra Gupta, writing in The Indian Express on May 10, 2024, identified this as the drama’s most impactful element: “The most impactful part of the series, written by Mustafa Neemuchwala and Udai Singh Pawar, and directed by Rajesh Acharya, is the portrayal of men who like other men, and who have to resort to drastic measures to manage crucial intimacy.” Deepa Gahlot’s May 15, 2024 review also read the story as an examination of prejudice, including the treatment of queer sex workers, family responses and public hostility. These are critical interpretations of the series, not claims that one drama can stand in for every queer experience.
How well does the murder investigation hold together?
The show’s two central strengths pull in different directions. Its character and social material gives the case weight, but detours and stretched passages can blunt the procedural suspense. Gupta criticized the pacing and found the antagonism between Jende and Peter contrived. Nirali Kanabar’s May 10, 2024 review for OTTplay likewise praised the engaging opening and the leads’ teamwork, while finding the later episodes tiring and distracted by character-side stories.
The result is a crime drama better suited to viewers who value social and character depth alongside the question of what happened. If your priority is a tightly escalating investigation, the later stretch may test your patience. The two reviewers’ ratings reflect their individual judgments, not a combined or audience-wide score:
| Reviewer | Publication date | Rating | Emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shubhra Gupta, The Indian Express | May 10, 2024 | 2.5/5 | Strong portrayal of queer intimacy; stretched sections and contrived lead conflict |
| Nirali Kanabar, OTTplay | May 10, 2024 | 3/5 | Engaging opening and lead teamwork; tiring later episodes and side stories |
