Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2: the latest update
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 is in production, but Prime Video has not announced a release date. Mark Eydelshteyn is the officially announced star, Talia Ryder has reportedly replaced Sophie Thatcher, and Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are reported to be returning from Season 1. Anna Ouyang Moench is taking over as showrunner, writer, and executive producer alongside Glover.
The production was delayed indefinitely in 2025, but filming restarted in Los Angeles in spring 2026. That makes old predictions about a 2025 or early-2026 premiere unreliable. Until Prime Video publishes a date or release window, the most accurate description is simply that Season 2 is in production and remains undated.
Has Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 been renewed?
Yes. Amazon has officially announced Season 2 and confirmed that the series is in production. The company’s April 13, 2026 update named Mark Eydelshteyn as the season’s star and announced Anna Ouyang Moench as the new showrunner, writer, and executive producer alongside Donald Glover.

Amazon also identified Maya Erskine as an executive producer. Returning executive producers named in the announcement include Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas, and Fam Udeorji.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 release date
There is no confirmed release date or premiere window. The season is in production, and reports place filming in Los Angeles in mid-April 2026, but Prime Video has not announced the day, month, or year when new episodes will be released.
It would therefore be premature to say that Season 2 will premiere in 2026. A production restart does not mean the finished episodes are ready for release: filming must be completed, followed by post-production, editing, music, visual effects, localization, and Prime Video’s release planning. Any specific 2026 date currently circulating should be treated as an estimate or rumor unless it comes from Prime Video or Amazon.
Why was Season 2 delayed?
Variety reported in September 2025 that Season 2 had been delayed indefinitely. At that point, Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher were attached to lead the season, and production was expected to move to Los Angeles after receiving a reported $22.4 million tax credit. Amazon did not comment to Variety at the time.

The production later changed course. Trade reporting in April 2026 said that Talia Ryder had replaced Thatcher and that production had begun after the delay. Marie Claire subsequently reported that filming started in Los Angeles in mid-April.
The available reporting supports this timeline:
- September 2025: an indefinite delay was reported, with Thatcher attached alongside Eydelshteyn.
- Spring 2026: Ryder was reported to have replaced Thatcher, with scheduling conflicts linked to the delay cited in coverage.
- April 2026: production restarted, with filming reported in Los Angeles.
- August 2026 status: Season 2 is in production, but its release date and full story details remain unconfirmed.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 cast
| Actor | Season 2 status |
|---|---|
| Mark Eydelshteyn | Officially announced by Amazon as the Season 2 star. |
| Talia Ryder | Reportedly replacing Sophie Thatcher and starring opposite Eydelshteyn. |
| Donald Glover | Reportedly returning; his Season 1 return and exact role in the new season should be described cautiously until Amazon provides a complete cast announcement. |
| Maya Erskine | Reportedly returning and officially identified by Amazon as an executive producer for Season 2. |
| Francesca Scorsese | Reported by Cinema Express to have joined the cast, possibly as part of another Smith couple. This remains a lower-confidence report. |
Mark Eydelshteyn
Eydelshteyn is the clearest Season 2 casting confirmation because Amazon’s official production announcement names him as the star. The announcement does not provide a detailed character description or explain how his character connects to the Smiths from Season 1.
Talia Ryder replaces Sophie Thatcher
Ryder is reported to have taken over the role previously associated with Sophie Thatcher. Trade coverage linked the change to scheduling conflicts connected with the project’s production delay.
Thatcher was part of the earlier Season 2 casting plan, but she should not be listed as a current lead without explaining that she was subsequently reported to have been replaced. Ryder is the more current name in the available production reporting.

The careful wording is “Glover and Erskine are reported to return.” Amazon’s official announcement confirms Eydelshteyn and the revised creative team but does not provide a complete role-by-role cast list. Their reported return is important because Season 1 ended with John and Jane’s future unresolved, but the precise extent of their involvement has not been fully detailed.
Francesca Scorsese’s reported role
Cinema Express reported in May 2026 that Francesca Scorsese joined the Season 2 cast and may appear as part of another Smith couple. This is a lower-confidence secondary report, not an official Amazon confirmation. The idea of multiple Smith couples has appeared in coverage, but the structure and relationships among those characters have not been formally explained.
Who is making Season 2?
Season 2 has a revised creative leadership structure. Anna Ouyang Moench is the new showrunner, writer, and executive producer alongside Donald Glover. Erskine is also an executive producer.
The change does not by itself establish what the season will be like or whether its tone and format will differ from Season 1. It does show that the second season is proceeding under a different showrunner arrangement rather than exactly repeating the first season’s creative setup.
What could Season 2 be about?
There is no official Season 2 synopsis in the available announcements and reporting. Any detailed plot summary should therefore be treated as speculation.
Season 1 reimagined the 2005 film as an eight-episode Prime Video drama. It followed two lonely strangers who accepted jobs with a mysterious spy agency, adopted new identities, entered an arranged marriage, and carried out dangerous missions while their relationship gradually became real.
The first season ended with John and Jane’s fate unresolved after their marriage and spy partnership deteriorated. That cliffhanger is the main reason discussion of Season 2 has focused on whether Glover and Erskine will return. It does not, however, confirm what the next story will be. The reported presence of Eydelshteyn and Ryder, and the possible introduction of another Smith couple, suggests that Season 2 may expand the show’s premise, but the show’s actual narrative plans remain unannounced.
How Season 2 connects to Season 1
The television series is a reimagining of the 2005 film rather than a continuation of that film’s physical storyline. Season 1 starred Glover and Erskine as a new John and Jane Smith and used the spy-marriage premise as the foundation for an eight-episode series.
Prime Video lists Season 1 as a 2024 series. Its regional catalog display identifies February 1, 2024, for the episodes, although displayed dates and availability can vary by territory.
The 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is a separate franchise version. It is useful context when comparing the film and television adaptations, but it is not Season 1 and does not contain Season 2.
If you want the earlier adaptation in a physical format, you can look for the original Mr. & Mrs. Smith film on DVD. Check the retailer listing carefully: format, stock, price, and regional availability can change, and the DVD is the 2005 film rather than the Prime Video series.
