A movie genre is a category suggested by recurring story conventions, character types, settings, style, and the kind of experience a film offers. Broad, familiar genres include action, adventure, comedy, crime, drama, documentary, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance, science fiction, thriller, war, and western. These are useful labels, not a single official or exhaustive taxonomy: films often blend genres, and the best label depends on what drives the story.
Movie genres list
This practical list focuses on broad, familiar story categories. A film can fit more than one; use the descriptions to identify the conventions that organize its story rather than treating each label as a rigid box.
- Action: Physical conflict, danger, pursuit, or stunts organize the story’s momentum.
- Adventure: A journey, exploration, quest, or consequential encounter drives the plot.
- Comedy: Comic situations, character behavior, or a comic perspective shape the experience.
- Crime: Lawbreaking, criminal activity, investigation, or the consequences of crime drive the story.
- Drama: Character relationships, choices, and conflicts receive sustained serious treatment.
- Documentary: Nonfiction treatment explores real people, events, places, or ideas. The Library of Congress Moving Image Genre List includes documentary as a genre term.
- Fantasy: Magical or otherwise impossible elements are accepted as part of the story world.
- Horror: The central promise is fear, dread, or unease.
- Mystery: The plot withholds information and centers on discovering an answer.
- Romance: The development of a relationship is central to the story.
- Science fiction: Speculative science or technology shapes the story world or its conflict.
- Thriller: Suspense, threat, and escalating uncertainty organize the experience.
- War: Armed conflict and its effects shape the story.
- Western: Frontier settings, conflicts, and character conventions organize the story.
How to identify a film’s primary genre
Start with the movie as a whole, not a memorable scene or a single detail. IMDb’s genre guidance emphasizes the narrative elements connected to the main driving force behind the story arc.
- Identify the central engine: What conflict or experience keeps the story moving?
- Look for recurring conventions: Consider the story, characters, and settings across its major turning points, not just one fight, location, or subplot.
- Ask what experience the conventions promise: Is the film chiefly building suspense, developing a relationship, provoking fear, or following a journey?
- Choose the primary label: Use the genre that best describes what organizes most of the film. Add a secondary label only when another genre materially shapes the story.
A police setting by itself does not make a film a crime movie, just as one fight does not make action its primary genre. A label should reflect the film’s overall story, not a prop, setting, or isolated moment.

Why films have hybrid genres
Genre conventions often overlap, so compound labels can be more useful than a single category. A romantic comedy draws on both romance and comedy; a crime thriller combines crime-story material with suspense and threat; science-fiction horror uses speculative elements alongside a central promise of fear. In each case, both traditions should do real organizing work. The British Film Institute discusses why genre remains useful while noting that its boundaries can be inconsistent and its lists have limitations (“Genres: where to draw the line?”).
How many movie genres are there?
There is no official universal count. The number depends on the purpose and granularity of a classification system: a short introductory list may use a dozen broad categories, while a database or archive may distinguish many more genres and related labels.

The Library of Congress’s Moving Image Genre-Form Guide, compiled in February 1998, says it covers about 150 moving-image genre-form terms. That figure describes the scope of that guide; it is not a declaration that exactly 150 genres exist. The Library’s list ranges beyond the familiar story genres above, including terms such as actuality, biographical, children’s, educational, ethnographic, and experimental.
Catalogues also use different working lists for different purposes. IMDb’s current contribution guidance, updated March 12, 2026, includes categories such as animation, biography, family, film noir, history, musical, and short alongside many of the broad genres above. Its guidance also cautions that definitions cannot cover every case. These lists should not be combined into a supposed universal total. For a recent practical explanation of classification, see Vancouver Film School’s Film Genres Explained (August 10, 2026).

Not every label attached to a film describes the same thing. Genre usually points to story conventions and the experience a film offers, but classification systems do not place every term in the same category. The Library of Congress guide distinguishes genre terms from forms and formats. IMDb, by contrast, includes labels such as animation, short, and documentary among title genres.
Depending on the catalogue, a term can describe story conventions, medium, running length, subject, or intended audience. “Biographical” and “historical,” for example, point toward subject matter; “short” describes length; “animation” describes a medium; and “family” can signal intended audience or a set of story expectations. Check how a particular catalogue defines its labels rather than assuming all film lists use one consistent system.
