It offers a satisfying continuation of Moana’s story, but one contemporary review found that its humor and music do not land as memorably as those of the 2016 original. That tension—not simply whether the sequel looks bigger—is the best way to judge whether this is a worthwhile return.
What is Moana 2 about?
Set three years after Moana (2016), the Walt Disney Animation Studios musical adventure begins when an unexpected call from Moana’s wayfinding ancestors sends her beyond the familiar waters of Oceania. She reunites with Maui and sails with a crew of seafarers on a dangerous journey into long-lost waters. The mission includes finding Motufetu, an island linked to her ancestors, and seeking evidence of Pacific Islanders beyond her home island, according to the Associated Press review.
The departure has a personal cost as well as a mythic one: Moana’s younger sister, Simea, raises the emotional stakes of leaving home. The sequel frames exploration as part of Moana’s growth as a leader and navigator, rather than merely repeating the first film’s call to adventure.
Disney credits David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller as directors, with Christina Chen and Yvett Merino as producers. The U.S. theatrical release was November 27, 2024. Disney’s film page and the Walt Disney Animation Studios listing provide the official premise and credits.

Is Moana 2 as good as the first Moana?
It is a continuation with recognizable strengths, not an uncontested improvement. In his Associated Press review published November 26, 2024, film critic Jake Coyle praised the animation as dazzling and a visual step up from the first film. He also judged the sequel’s humor and catchy songs less effective than the original’s, and argued that its many new characters can pull the story in too many directions. Those are Coyle’s critical assessments, not a measure of critical consensus.
That contrast helps explain the “more of the same” question. The sequel returns to ocean voyaging, musical storytelling and the Moana–Maui partnership, while widening the expedition’s scale and cast. A larger crew can make the world feel busier, but Coyle found that newcomers Moni, Loto and Kele are not developed enough to give the crowded story much extra force. His review singles out Matangi and her song, “Get Lost,” as a more engaging addition.

The result, on these terms, is a return that can satisfy viewers primarily looking for another adventure with Moana and Maui, while offering less assurance for anyone hoping the sequel’s songs, jokes or character chemistry will surpass the first film. The two films share a foundation; the critical reservation is that the sequel’s expansion does not always deepen it.
Are the songs in Moana 2 good?
The music has a substantial new set of contributors, but the number of songs alone does not settle whether they are as memorable as the first film’s. D23’s November 2024 interview reports that Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear wrote five new songs, while Opetaia Foa‘i and Mark Mancina returned and contributed three new songs. Disney credits all four with the film’s music.

Coyle’s view was that the new songs are less catchy than those in the original, while identifying “Get Lost” as a highlight. That is a useful point of comparison, rather than a universal verdict: listeners may respond differently to the sequel’s score and songs, but the available critical assessment suggests the music does not consistently reach the same immediate memorability.
In the D23 interview, Bear described a poster in the film’s story room that read, “You never stop discovering who you are.” She said the phrase still captured the songwriters’ goal. It is a statement about the music’s intended theme, not a line identified as dialogue from the film. D23’s interview with Barlow and Bear discusses the songwriting.

How long is Moana 2, and what is its rating?
The Associated Press review lists a 100-minute runtime and a PG rating for action and peril. Disney+ displays a runtime of 1 hour 43 minutes, a three-minute difference between the two listings. Use the service or local film classification listing for the version and territory you plan to watch. Disney+’s title page shows its current listing.
Is Moana 2 worth watching?
For a viewer who wants more of Moana’s world, a new ocean crossing and a visual spectacle, the sequel has a clear case. For someone measuring it against the first film’s humor and especially its musical staying power, Coyle’s review points to a less satisfying follow-up. Its expanded crew and ambitions do not automatically translate into richer character dynamics, but its central journey continues Moana’s wayfinding and leadership story.
Disney’s February 2025 announcement said the film had crossed $1 billion worldwide and described it as the No. 3 highest-grossing film of 2024. Those are Disney’s claims in its streaming announcement, not an independent assessment of the film’s quality. Disney+ Press gives the figures and streaming date.
