1989: How Michelle and Barack Obama met
Michelle Robinson was a lawyer at Sidley & Austin in Chicago when Barack Obama joined the firm as a summer associate. The Obama Foundation says Robinson was assigned to advise him and show him around. In a later White House Q&A, Michelle Obama recalled that she had finished law school and was working at a law firm while Obama was still in law school.
The Obama Foundation dates their first date to July 1, 1989. It recounts Barack Obama’s own description of how he persuaded Robinson to go out with him: “I asked her out. She refused. I kept asking. She kept refusing. Finally, I offered to quit my job, and at last she relented.” The quotation is his recollection, as presented by the Foundation.
October 3, 1992: They marry in Chicago
Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama married on October 3, 1992. The Barack Obama Presidential Library identifies Trinity United Church of Christ as the site of their wedding, while the Obama Foundation names the South Shore Cultural Center in connection with the wedding day. Together, these accounts place the ceremony and celebration in Chicago.

1998 and 2001: Their daughters are born
Their first daughter, Malia Ann Obama, was born on July 4, 1998. Their second daughter, Natasha, known as Sasha, was born on June 10, 2001.
January 2009: The family moves to Washington
On January 5, 2009, shortly before Barack Obama’s inauguration, the family moved to Washington, D.C. The Miller Center notes that the Obamas sought to protect their daughters’ privacy during their years in the capital.
