What Michael Keaton said about making the sequel
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight published March 8, 2024, Keaton reflected on the long path to making a follow-up to the 1988 film. “It took a while to get there,” he said. He added: “I didn’t really think we were gonna do it and didn’t want to do it, various times [in the] last few years, but it was more fun than the other one.”

“More fun” is Keaton’s personal comparison of the filmmaking experience, not a claim about reviews, audiences, or the finished films’ quality. His comments capture a change in attitude: he had reservations about revisiting the character, then enjoyed making the sequel more than the original.
Which Beetlejuice sequel was he discussing?
The film is officially titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Directed by Tim Burton, it continues the story of the 1988 Beetlejuice. Keaton returned as the mischievous spirit, alongside Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. Jenna Ortega joined the cast as Astrid, Lydia’s daughter.

Warner Bros.’ official movie site describes the story as bringing three generations of the Deetz family back to Winter River after an unexpected family tragedy. Astrid discovers the mysterious model town in the attic, and a portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened.
When Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was released
The film is no longer upcoming. Warner Bros. lists a September 6, 2024 release in US theaters and IMAX, with international release beginning September 4, 2024. The studio says Warner Bros. Pictures distributed it worldwide.

Keaton’s earlier comments about the production
Keaton also discussed the sequel’s approach in a separate interview reported by TheWrap on June 3, 2023. In remarks from an Empire interview, he said, “We’re doing it exactly like we did the first movie.” That earlier comment concerned the production approach; it was not part of his 2024 Entertainment Tonight interview about how much he enjoyed making the sequel.
At CinemaCon in April 2024, Burton called the cast’s reunion “like a weird family reunion,” according to the Associated Press. Keaton praised the film there too, saying, “It’s good. It’s really, really good. In fact, it’s great.” These were separate remarks made during the film’s promotion.
