Menendez Brothers Speak Out in Netflix’s The Menendez Brothers: “So Much Hasn’t Been Told”

Netflix’s The Menendez Brothers lets Erik and Lyle Menendez speak for themselves through newly recorded prison interviews, then places their account beside prosecutors, lawyers, relatives, journalists, jurors, and archival case material. The film revisits the 1989 killings of José and Kitty Menendez and the trials that followed—but it does not prove the brothers’ innocence or resolve the disputed abuse and motive claims.

What The Menendez Brothers adds to the story

The Menendez Brothers is built around newly recorded audio interviews with Erik and Lyle Menendez, conducted while the brothers were incarcerated. Their voices are placed alongside archival case material and interviews with prosecutors, defense lawyers, journalists, jurors, relatives, and other people connected to the killings and trials.

That structure is the documentary’s answer to the claim that “so much hasn’t been told.” The murders and courtroom proceedings received enormous attention, but director Alejandro Hartmann’s film argues that the brothers’ own account of their family history, their experience of the media coverage, and the continuing debate over the case deserve to be heard directly. It does not, however, turn disputed allegations into established fact or replace the court record.

The basic facts of the case

On August 20, 1989, José and Kitty Menendez were killed in their Beverly Hills home. The investigation eventually focused on their sons, Lyle and Erik, and the brothers were prosecuted in trials that became a major national media story.

The central disagreement has always concerned motive and credibility:

Interpretation What it says
Prosecution theory Prosecutors argued that the brothers killed their parents for financial gain.
Defense theory The defense argued that the killings followed years of alleged sexual, psychological, and physical abuse, particularly involving their father.
The documentary’s approach The film presents both the prosecution’s interpretation and the brothers’ account through interviews, archival material, and case-related perspectives.

The abuse allegations are among the most sensitive and contested parts of the story. The appropriate description is that Erik and Lyle alleged abuse and that the defense relied on those allegations. The documentary gives the claims substantial context, but viewers should not treat the film itself as a judicial finding that every disputed allegation was proved.

How Erik and Lyle Menendez speak in the film

The brothers’ participation is the documentary’s most significant point of difference from earlier coverage. Instead of hearing only actors, commentators, or excerpts from historical reporting, viewers hear Erik and Lyle describe their own understanding of the family, the killings, and the trials from prison.

The interviews are presented as part of a larger investigation rather than as a stand-alone statement of innocence. Hartmann told Netflix’s editorial outlet Tudum that he worked through decades of material and sought perspectives from people on different sides of the case. That broader approach is reflected in the people interviewed for the film, including prosecutor Pamela Bozanich and cousin Diane Vander Molen, as well as journalists, relatives, jurors, lawyers, and other informed observers.

This matters because the brothers’ account is not the only voice in the documentary. Their recollections are placed in tension with the prosecution’s position, public reporting, trial history, and the memories of people who knew the family or followed the proceedings. The result is intended to be a fuller record of the debate, not a simple reversal of the original prosecution narrative.

What “so much hasn’t been told” means

The phrase comes from the film’s promotional framing rather than from the documentary’s official title. In the trailer, Erik suggests that important parts of the family’s private history and the brothers’ perspective were not heard directly when the case first became a national spectacle.

The film also examines how the case was shaped by media coverage. The Menendez murders were discussed through television reporting, courtroom narratives, and changing public assumptions about family violence, abuse, and credibility. Decades later, social media created a new movement of people supporting the brothers and revisiting the evidence and arguments from the trials.

That renewed interest is part of the documentary’s modern context. It does not mean that online support constitutes legal evidence, nor does it settle the competing accounts. It shows instead how the public interpretation of a famous case can change as new audiences encounter old testimony, new interviews, and different ideas about how abuse claims should be understood.

A documentary, not a second trial

The Menendez Brothers is a selected documentary narrative. It uses interviews and archival material chosen and arranged by Hartmann and his production team. Even when a documentary includes participants who were present at important events, their recollections remain perspectives that must be considered alongside other evidence.

For that reason, the film should not be read as:

  • a complete transcript of the trials;
  • a finding that the brothers were innocent;
  • independent proof of every abuse allegation or motive claim; or
  • a substitute for the underlying court records.

Its value is different. It lets viewers hear the brothers after roughly three decades, while also preserving room for prosecutors, attorneys, relatives, journalists, jurors, and other participants to challenge, explain, or complicate their account.

The Menendez Brothers and Monsters: how they differ

Netflix released the documentary shortly after Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s scripted limited series. The timing led many viewers from the drama to the documentary in search of more information about the real case.

Title Format What viewers should expect
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story Scripted dramatization A fictionalized, acted interpretation of the brothers, their family, and the criminal case.
The Menendez Brothers Documentary film Interviews, archival material, and case-related testimony, including newly recorded interviews with Erik and Lyle.

The documentary is therefore a factual companion in format, not an official explanation that automatically confirms or corrects every scene in Monsters. It still has an editorial point of view: Hartmann selected the participants, evidence, and sequence through which the story is told.

Release, availability, and audience response

Netflix released The Menendez Brothers on October 7, 2024. Netflix classifies it as a documentary film about crime and courtroom proceedings. The listing identifies Erik and Lyle as the brothers convicted in the killings and describes the film as an examination of the crime and the ensuing trials.

The film remains identified as a 2024 Netflix documentary. Its listing includes English original audio and additional audio and subtitle options, although the exact language selection and availability can vary by country or territory. Viewers should check the Netflix listing available in their location rather than assume that every language option is offered everywhere.

Netflix reported that the documentary opened at number one on its English-language film list for the week of October 7, 2024, with 22.7 million views. The company linked that performance to the renewed interest generated by the documentary and the scripted Monsters series. That figure is Netflix’s own reported audience measurement, not an independently audited comparison of all true-crime films.

What happened after the documentary was released?

The 2024 film reflects the brothers’ earlier status as prisoners serving life without parole. That is not the end of the legal timeline, but later developments must be kept separate from what the documentary itself depicts.

On May 13, 2025, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic resentenced both brothers to 50 years to life, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The new sentences made them eligible for parole consideration.

Eligibility is not the same as release, and resentencing did not overturn the convictions. The District Attorney’s Office also reported that a later habeas-corpus petition was denied in September 2025. Those developments changed the brothers’ sentencing position after the film’s release; they did not make the documentary a record of the 2025 proceedings.

The careful current description is therefore: Erik and Lyle Menendez were resentenced to 50 years to life in 2025 and became eligible for parole consideration, but the documentary does not prove their innocence and parole eligibility does not mean they were freed.

Is there more to read after watching?

Because a feature documentary cannot include every filing, interview, and piece of historical reporting, some viewers may want a longer account. Robert Rand’s updated Menendez Murders book is a related, independent option. Rand is a journalist who followed the case from its beginning, and the 2024 updated edition adds material about later developments and newly discussed evidence.

The book is not an official Netflix companion, and it should not be assumed to reach exactly the same conclusions as Hartmann’s film. It is best understood as a separate, book-length account for readers who want more chronology and reporting after watching the documentary. The original 2018 trade paperback exists as well, but the updated 2024 edition is the more relevant choice for readers starting now.

Who should watch it?

  • Viewers who watched Monsters: The documentary provides direct interviews and real participants rather than a dramatized retelling.
  • True-crime viewers: It offers competing accounts of motive, family history, media coverage, and the trials.
  • Viewers interested in documentary method: The film shows how a director can build a narrative from conflicting testimony and decades of archival material.
  • Anyone seeking a definitive verdict: The documentary may be less satisfying if the goal is a final answer to every disputed question. Its purpose is to reopen and contextualize the debate, not to issue a new legal judgment.

Final assessment

The Menendez Brothers earns its “so much hasn’t been told” framing by giving Erik and Lyle Menendez an unusually prominent direct voice after decades of public discussion. Its stronger contribution, however, is the decision to place that voice beside prosecutors, relatives, lawyers, journalists, jurors, and archival evidence.

The most responsible way to watch it is as a detailed, contested documentary account: important for understanding how the brothers describe their family and their case, but not conclusive proof of innocence, abuse, motive, or any other disputed issue. The 2025 resentencing adds an important update for present-day viewers, while remaining separate from the 2024 film itself.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Netflix’s The Menendez Brothers gives Erik and Lyle Menendez a direct platform through prison interviews, but it does not settle the case. It presents their abuse allegations alongside the prosecution’s financial-motive theory and other participants’ accounts. Since its release, the brothers were resentenced to 50 years to life and became eligible for parole consideration—an important legal change, but not an exoneration or release.
