Billy Joel’s “100th” Madison Square Garden concert was not his 100th show at the venue overall. That milestone arrived on July 18, 2018. The concert filmed for Billy Joel: The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden took place on March 28, 2024, and celebrated the 100th consecutive performance of Joel’s monthly Madison Square Garden residency.
The event brought together Joel’s long-running Garden tradition, surprise appearances by Sting and Jerry Seinfeld, and a career-spanning set of songs. It was broadcast by CBS as a two-hour television special, but that version is an edited presentation rather than the complete concert. Viewers who want all 25 documented performances need the separate complete-concert Blu-ray release.
What Billy Joel’s 100th Madison Square Garden concert actually marked
Joel first performed at Madison Square Garden on December 14, 1978. His relationship with the venue became a defining part of his career, and in December 2013 he was named Madison Square Garden’s first music franchise. The monthly residency began in January 2014.

Joel’s July 18, 2018 performance was his 100th lifetime appearance at Madison Square Garden and the 54th consecutive show in the residency then underway. Six years later, the March 28, 2024 concert marked a different achievement: the 100th consecutive performance of the residency.
That distinction matters because descriptions of the 2024 film sometimes shorten the achievement to “Billy Joel’s 100th Madison Square Garden concert.” The more precise description is “the 100th consecutive Madison Square Garden residency performance.”
Inside the March 28, 2024 performance

- “Big Man on Mulberry Street”
- “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”
The pairing gives the concert one of its most distinctive moments. “Big Man on Mulberry Street” connects directly to Joel’s New York-centered songwriting, while “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” brings Sting’s own catalog into the milestone performance.
Jerry Seinfeld and the milestone banner
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld also appeared during the event. Rather than joining Joel for a song, Seinfeld helped raise the banner commemorating the 100-performance residency achievement. His appearance reinforces the occasion’s New York identity: it is presented not only as a concert, but as a Madison Square Garden event.

The broadcast is not the complete concert
This is the most important viewing distinction. The CBS-style special is a curated edit of the March 28 performance. The official complete-concert release contains 25 tracks and adds 11 performances that were not included in the original broadcast:

Why the concert became a television event
Joel’s residency had already made Madison Square Garden part of the concert’s subject matter. The 2024 performance turned that ongoing relationship into a formal milestone, complete with a banner ceremony and guest appearances. The result is less like a randomly selected tour date and more like a documented chapter in the history of one artist and one venue.
The special was also significant as Joel’s first concert program to air on a broadcast network. Sony Music later reported more than 24 million viewers across the program’s three broadcasts. It received three Creative Arts Emmy Awards: Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork for a Special; Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special; and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Variety Series or Special.
