Rotten Tomatoes does not publish an official list called “Melissa McCarthy’s 10 Most Popular Comedies.” Its 2022 guide, All Melissa McCarthy Movies Ranked, orders her films by Tomatometer score—not popularity—and includes titles that are not straightforward comedies or may feature her in a smaller role. The guide’s first ten are therefore best described as its highest-ranked films, not ten most popular comedies.
For a clearer comedy-focused list, the table below uses Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed high-rated titles that it identifies as comedies and shows both critic and audience scores. It is not a popularity ranking: the figures do not establish which films have the largest audiences, and the profile list includes Love, Gilda, a documentary about Gilda Radner, in which McCarthy appears. Scores can change; the figures below are the values reported in Rotten Tomatoes’ profile and film pages accessed in 2026.

Why “popular” and “highest-rated” are not the same
Rotten Tomatoes uses two separate scores. The Tomatometer reflects the share of professional critics’ reviews that are positive; the Popcornmeter reflects audience ratings. Neither percentage alone is a count of viewers, box-office receipts, or a complete measure of popularity. Rotten Tomatoes’ profile presents both scores, while its editorial guide explicitly says it ranks films by Tomatometer. Rotten Tomatoes’ Melissa McCarthy profile and its ranked guide use different formats and should not be conflated.
The profile’s highest-rated results are not a complete audience ranking: the sources available do not establish a ten-film order by audience score with rating counts for every title. A defensible answer is to show the displayed scores, identify which films qualify as comedies, and avoid claiming that the results prove popularity.

Melissa McCarthy comedies among Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed high-rated titles
These are the profile’s displayed high-rated results screened for films identified as comedies. Scores are percentages, not rankings of audience size. Love, Gilda is included separately as a documentary appearance, rather than presented as one of McCarthy’s comedies.
| Film | Tomatometer | Popcornmeter | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can You Ever Forgive Me? | 98% | 81% | A comedy-drama and biographical film, not a straightforward comedy. |
| Spy | 94% | 78% | Comedy. |
| Bridesmaids | 89% | 76% | Comedy; an ensemble film with McCarthy in the cast. |
| St. Vincent | 78% | 78% | Comedy-drama. |
| Ghostbusters | 74% | 48% | Comedy. |
| The Heat | 66% | 71% | Comedy. |
| The Nines | 63% | 61% | Not a straightforward comedy. |
| This Is 40 | 52% | 50% | Comedy. |
| Love, Gilda | 89% | 81% | Documentary, not a McCarthy comedy. |
| The Little Mermaid | 67% | 93% | Comedy is not the basis for including this title in a McCarthy-comedy list. |
The profile’s displayed results do not supply rating counts for every film in this list, so a higher Popcornmeter percentage should not be read as meaning more people watched or rated a title. Rotten Tomatoes lists Bridesmaids as a comedy and includes McCarthy in its cast; its page showed an 89% Tomatometer from 294 reviews and a 76% Popcornmeter from more than 100,000 ratings in 2026. Those counts are a dated snapshot, not permanent totals. See Rotten Tomatoes’ Bridesmaids page.

What Rotten Tomatoes’ ranked guide actually puts in its top ten
The August 26, 2022 guide ranks all Melissa McCarthy movies by Tomatometer. Here are its first ten entries as published; this is a critic-score order from that guide, not a current popularity chart or a list limited to comedies in which she has a substantial role.
| Guide position | Film | Tomatometer in the 2022 guide | Fit for a strict McCarthy-comedy list |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Can You Ever Forgive Me? | 98% | Comedy-drama; its genre makes a strict comedy label incomplete. |
| 2 | Spy | 94% | Comedy. |
| 3 | Bridesmaids | 89% | Comedy and ensemble film. |
| 4 | Ghostbusters | 74% | Comedy. |
| 5 | The Heat | 66% | Comedy. |
| 6 | The Nines | 63% | Not a straightforward comedy. |
| 7 | This Is 40 | 52% | Comedy; McCarthy’s role is not the basis for calling it a McCarthy-led film. |
| 8 | Life of the Party | 38% | Comedy. |
| 9 | Pumpkin | 36% | Its inclusion in an all-films guide does not by itself establish a substantial comedy role. |
| 10 | The Third Wheel | 33% | Its inclusion in an all-films guide does not by itself establish a substantial comedy role. |
This list differs from the profile’s displayed high-rated results because the guide and profile are not the same kind of list, and the guide is dated 2022. In particular, it should not be relabeled “most popular” or treated as a current score table.

Where to start if you want a comedy
For a high critic score
Spy and Bridesmaids are among the profile’s strongest straightforward comedy choices by Tomatometer, at 94% and 89% respectively in the displayed results. Bridesmaids also offers a useful example of why critics’ and audience scores should both be checked: its critic score was higher than its audience score in the 2026 snapshot.
For a closer critic–audience match
The Heat shows a different balance: the profile lists 66% from critics and 71% from audiences. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus calls the film predictable but praises McCarthy’s comic reliability and Sandra Bullock as her foil. Read Rotten Tomatoes’ The Heat page.

For a comedy-drama rather than a broad comedy
Can You Ever Forgive Me? leads the guide’s 2022 Tomatometer ranking and appears first among the profile’s high-rated results, but it is a biographical comedy-drama. Its high rating makes it relevant to McCarthy’s best-reviewed work, not an uncomplicated pick for someone seeking a conventional comedy.

Rotten Tomatoes scores and rating totals can move as reviews and audience ratings change. Check the film’s current page when comparing titles, and treat any score or count as a snapshot rather than a fixed property of the movie. Streaming and digital availability also varies by country and date; Rotten Tomatoes’ score pages do not establish where a film is currently available to watch.
