A$AP Rocky and Colman Domingo were two of the event’s five co-chairs; Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour were the other three. LeBron James served as honorary chair. The exhibition explored Black style through the history and evolving practices of dandyism—not just the looks on the red carpet.
Who co-chaired the 2025 Met Gala?
The Costume Institute Benefit, commonly known as the Met Gala, was held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on May 5, 2025. Its co-chairs were Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour. LeBron James was honorary chair. The Met’s announcement of the Gala details identifies the chairs and the event’s purpose: to celebrate the opening of the Costume Institute exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.
The benefit is the Costume Institute’s primary source of funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations, and capital improvements, according to the Met. The museum does not state a fundraising total or attendance figure in the cited event information.
What was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style about?
The exhibition examined three hundred years of Black style through the lens of dandyism. It brought together garments and accessories with paintings, photographs, decorative arts, prints, ephemera, and film excerpts. Rather than treating clothing as decoration alone, the Met presented dress as a way people have negotiated identity and imagined social and political possibilities.

That argument holds style alongside the forces that shape it: race, gender, class, and sexuality. The exhibition’s account of Black dandyism also situates it within histories of enslavement, colonialism, and unequal power. Creativity and self-fashioning appear in that context as forms of agency, not as evidence that those histories have disappeared.
The show was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Miller served as guest curator with Andrew Bolton and the Costume Institute team. The Met’s exhibition announcement traces Black dandyism’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe in the eighteenth century and its later expressions in cities including London, New York, and Paris.

How did the exhibition organize its ideas?
The Met organized the exhibition into 12 sections, using characteristics such as Champion, Respectability, Heritage, Beauty, and Cosmopolitanism to explore different dimensions of dandyism. These were not presented as a definitive checklist or a single, fixed definition. They offered ways to consider an evolving sartorial mode and the meanings people make through self-presentation.
In the Met’s framing, self-presentation can create distinction and resist stereotypes. That makes the exhibition’s subject broader than a history of particular suits or a celebration of individual outfits: it asks how dress can shape the relationship between appearance, identity, and power.

What did “Tailored for You” mean?
“Tailored for You” was the 2025 Met Gala dress code. The Met said it nodded to suiting and menswear, including silhouettes, fabrics, and accessories, while offering guests guidance and room for creative interpretation. It was a prompt for the evening’s dress, not a substitute for the exhibition’s wider historical and cultural argument. The museum’s Gala announcement explains the dress code.
