The original G1 Decepticon leader, the Beast-era Predacon commander, and other versions belong to different continuities, with different stories and alternate forms. In the G1 movie storyline, Megatron is rebuilt as Galvatron; that change is not a franchise-wide rule.
Who is Megatron in Transformers?
Megatron is one of the central antagonists in the Transformers franchise. Hasbro says Transformers debuted worldwide in 1984 through toys, comics, and animation, and identifies Megatron among the characters introduced at launch. The franchise marked its 40th anniversary in 2024. Hasbro’s anniversary history
Across stories, the name is used for more than one character. The original G1 Megatron is a Decepticon leader; Beast-era Megatron is a Predacon commander. Hasbro’s character bios present G2 Decepticon Megatron and Predacon Megatron as separate entries, so their faction, backstory, and forms should not be merged into a single biography.
How do the main Megatron versions differ?
| Version | Continuity and faction | Story role | Alternate form |
|---|---|---|---|
| G1 Megatron | Original Transformers continuity; Decepticon | Leader and antagonist; in the G1 movie storyline, Unicron rebuilds him as Galvatron. | The cited G1 reference covers his historical portrayal, but the supplied sources do not establish one form as a franchise-wide answer. | G2 Megatron | Generation 2; Decepticon leader | Decepticon leader, with a Fusion Cannon. | Tank. Hasbro character bios |
| Beast-era Megatron | Beast Wars and Beast Machines; Predacon | Predacon commander and antagonist. | The reference lists tyrannosaurus rex, alligator, and dragon forms. Hasbro’s bio describes a later dragon-form story in which he fuses his spark with his namesake’s. TFWiki’s Beast-era reference Hasbro character bios |
The Beast-era reference is a community-edited source, useful here for identifying forms and story context. Hasbro’s official bios substantiate the separate Predacon and G2 entries.

What does Megatron transform into?
There is no single answer for the whole franchise: the form depends on the continuity and incarnation. Hasbro identifies G2 Megatron as a tank, while its Predacon bio describes a dragon form; the Beast-era reference also lists tyrannosaurus rex and alligator forms. Those animal forms belong to the Beast-era character, not G1 Megatron.
Is Megatron the same as Galvatron?
In the G1 movie storyline, Unicron rebuilds Megatron as Galvatron. That is a specific plot development in that continuity, not a general rule that every Megatron becomes Galvatron. The name Galvatron should therefore be understood in its story context rather than used as a label for all versions of Megatron.

Are Beast Wars Megatron and the original Megatron the same character?
No. Beast Wars Megatron is a Predacon commander, distinct from the original G1 Decepticon leader. The Beast-era story gives him animal forms and a separate role; Hasbro’s bio describes a later dragon-form storyline in which he fuses his spark with his namesake’s. The shared name connects the characters, but it does not make their biographies identical.

Dated franchise context
In an announcement dated September 17, 2026, Hasbro said The Transformers: The Movie would return to theaters in a restored 4K presentation and that Frank Welker performs Megatron and Soundwave in the animated short Optimus Prime: Awakening. The announcement is a dated snapshot of franchise activity, not confirmation that any screening or product is currently available. Hasbro’s announcement
Welker, the original voice of Megatron, reflected on the franchise’s longevity in Hasbro’s 2024 anniversary announcement: “When you have a franchise that goes 40 years in this business, it’s pretty remarkable,” he said, “to watch the franchise just build and build and build it is amazing to watch.” Hasbro’s anniversary history
