Museums Victoria’s collection record says at least 267 of the 313 bones known for a Triceratops skeleton are present, or 85%. That makes Horridus exceptionally complete, though the mounted display also uses replicas to fill missing parts.
What is Horridus?
Horridus is the nickname for Museums Victoria specimen P 256878. The collection record identifies it as Triceratops horridus, a species named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1889. The familiar mounted skeleton is presented in Melbourne Museum’s exhibition Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs.
The phrase “world’s most complete” is a characterization used by the museum, not a separate species designation. The clearest measure of completeness is the collection record’s bone count.
How complete is Horridus?
Museums Victoria’s collection record reports that at least 267 of the 313 bones known for a Triceratops skeleton are present—85%. The museum also says nearly all of Horridus’s preserved bones are intact. Some fragments have not yet been identified and could belong to bones currently considered missing.

A 2021–22 Museums Victoria annual report describes Horridus as comprising 266 bones. That report and the collection record give different counts, and the available museum information does not explain the difference. The annual report also says the fossil weighs more than 1,000 kg; that figure is attributed to the 2021–22 report.
Which parts of the display are real fossil?
The mounted skeleton combines preserved fossil bones with replicas. Museums Victoria says replica pieces are grey so visitors can distinguish them from original fossil. Where possible, a missing bone is reconstructed as a mirror image of a preserved bone from the opposite side of Horridus. Where no matching Horridus bone is available, the replica is based on a bone from another Triceratops or a related ceratopsid.

That distinction matters when looking at a mounted skeleton: its completeness as a display does not mean every visible part came from this individual. The replica system lets visitors see the animal’s overall form while making reconstructions identifiable.
Where was Horridus found?
Melbourne Museum says Horridus was discovered in Montana, USA, in 2014. Part of its pelvis was protruding from sandstone, and the fossil lay beneath 3.5 metres of sandstone.
