Max is not waiting for a single nationwide switch-on date. Its U.S. policy already limits an account to the owner and people who live in the same household. Enforcement is rolling, so some subscribers may see warnings or verification requests before others. If someone lives elsewhere, the legitimate choices are a $7.99-per-month Extra Member Add-On, a separate Max subscription, or ending that access.
What Max’s household rule actually says
Max says an account is for the owner and people who live with the owner. A family relationship does not change that test: residence does. Spouses and children at the primary home are generally within the household; adult children, parents, siblings or friends at another address are outside it. Max’s policy also explicitly treats a student living in a college dorm as outside the household. Read the Max account-sharing policy.
A vacation home and frequent travel are less clear. Max has not published a fixed IP-address, GPS-radius or number-of-days formula. Travel is not automatically the same as permanent out-of-household sharing, but a traveling device may still encounter an account or household verification request.
When enforcement affects an account
Max has described a gradual rollout rather than one confirmed U.S. date that applies to every subscriber. Depending on the account, device and billing arrangement, an affected user may see:

- a sign-in or playback warning;
- a request to verify the account or household;
- loss of access until the user returns to the household;
- a prompt to start an individual subscription; or
- an invitation to become an Extra Member.
Some people may continue watching for a time. That does not establish a permanent exemption. Max has not publicly documented every detection method or promised one identical warning-to-blocking sequence.
Extra Member: the paid option for one person elsewhere
Max launched its U.S. Extra Member Add-On on April 22, 2025. It costs $7.99 per month plus applicable taxes and currently covers one person outside the household. The announcement is documented in Warner Bros. Discovery’s launch release.
| Requirement or feature | What Max says |
|---|---|
| Number of extra members | One |
| Age | At least 18 |
| Country | The owner and Extra Member must be in the country where the subscription was created |
| Login | Separate email/login, password and profile |
| Streaming | Anywhere Max is available, on one device at a time |
| Profiles | One profile for the Extra Member |
The Extra Member remains attached to the owner’s subscription; it is not simply continued use of the owner’s password. Max says the member receives the applicable features of the owner’s underlying plan. Details and restrictions are in the Extra Member help page.

Transferring an existing profile
The owner can invite the person with a new profile or transfer an existing adult profile. A transferred adult profile can retain watch history and My List. Kids profiles cannot be transferred. Ordinary Max accounts can have up to five profiles, but an Extra Member account is limited to one; see Max’s profile guidance.

- Choose Invite Extra Member.
- Enter the person’s first name and email address.
- Select New Profile or an existing adult profile.
- Select Send Invite.
- Have the recipient accept the email invitation.
An invitation expires after seven days; Max may send a reminder after several days. Only an adult profile can manage subscription settings. Check the account’s Subscription screen first using Max’s plans and subscription help.
Who cannot buy Extra Member?
Having Max does not guarantee access to the add-on. Max limits it to eligible subscribers billed directly through WarnerMedia/Max. The help page excludes subscribers billed through app stores, internet, mobile or television providers, and the Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle.

The bundle currently lists $16.99 per month with ads or $29.99 without ads, and does not offer Premium or Extra Member. See the bundle details. For any provider-billed account, identify who collects payment before trying to change the plan. Max explains this in its subscription-management guide.
Extra Member versus a separate Max subscription
| Option | Current U.S. price | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra Member | $7.99/month plus tax | One adult outside the household who wants access under the owner’s plan | One member; many billing arrangements are excluded |
| Basic with Ads | $9.99/month | Independent account at the lowest listed standalone price | Ads and fewer features than higher tiers |
| Standard | $16.99/month | Independent account with more plan features | Costs more |
| Premium | $20.99/month | Independent account seeking the highest listed tier | Highest monthly price |
Max lists annual prices of $99.99, $169.99 and $209.99 for Basic with Ads, Standard and Premium, respectively, describing annual billing as 16% less than monthly billing. See current U.S. prices and features.
At those listed rates, adding Extra Member produces arithmetic totals of $17.98 for Basic with Ads, $24.98 for Standard and $28.98 for Premium, before tax. A separate Basic account is only $2 more than Extra Member, so independence may be worth the difference. Extra Member can still be preferable when the owner’s plan-level benefits matter, particularly compared with a standalone Basic plan.

What account owners should do now
- Check the billing provider. In Max, open the profile or Settings area and select Subscription. Confirm who bills the account; provider records or the bank statement can help. Max’s instructions are at this support page.
- Map the users. Confirm who actually lives at the owner’s residence and who uses another home, dorm or long-term address.
- Choose a lawful arrangement. For one eligible adult elsewhere, compare Extra Member with a separate plan. For several households, one add-on is not enough.
- Preserve history if needed. Transfer an eligible adult profile before access changes.
- Review devices and credentials. Remove devices that should no longer connect and avoid distributing the primary password unnecessarily.
- Use a unique password. Do this as an account-security measure, not as a guaranteed fix for a household-location check.
Troubleshooting common problems
A household member is flagged
- Confirm the person is signing into the correct Max account.
- Check whether the owner recently changed the password or created a duplicate account.
- Review subscription and payment status.
- Follow the normal verification flow shown on screen.
- Contact Max support if people at the same address repeatedly lose access.
Changing the password signs the account out on all devices, so it can create extra disruption and does not necessarily resolve a household-verification issue. Max describes that consequence in its account-security help.
There is no “Invite Extra Member” option
First check the billing provider and plan. App-store, mobile, internet, television and bundle billing can make the add-on unavailable. Manage the subscription through the provider where required rather than repeatedly trying inside Max.
The invitation expired
Extra Member invitations expire after seven days. The owner should send a new invitation and have the recipient accept it from the email account entered during setup.

The owner wants to stop sharing
Changing the password signs out every device; the owner can then give the new password only to household members. Removing an Extra Member cuts off that person’s access immediately, and Max says it emails the removed user.
What this means for students, travelers and larger families
- College students: A dorm resident is outside the household under Max’s stated policy.
- Travelers: Max publishes no fixed travel allowance or device-location threshold, so do not assume a trip will produce the same result as permanent sharing.
- Several relatives: One Extra Member does not authorize access for multiple separate homes.
- Bundle customers: The bundle’s value may change if switching to a qualifying direct Max plan becomes necessary.
Bottom line
Max’s password-sharing crackdown is already active in policy and product terms, but enforcement is rolling rather than tied to one confirmed nationwide date. If an out-of-household user is important, check billing eligibility now: an Extra Member costs $7.99 monthly for one adult, while a separate Basic with Ads account is listed at $9.99. Otherwise, access may eventually end when Max’s checks reach the account.
