Her earlier statements, in October 2023 and January 2024, described a slow recovery after a life-threatening hospitalization. Those dated accounts do not establish her medical condition today.
What Retton said about her recovery
October 2023: slow recovery with family
On October 30, 2023, Retton said she was with family, recovering slowly and trying to stay positive. She also asked for privacy while she recovered. The Los Angeles Times reported her statement: “I’m with family continuing to slowly recover and staying very positive as I know this recovery is a long and slow process.”
January 2024: a serious hospitalization
In an interview with Hoda Kotb on NBC’s Today, which aired January 8, 2024, Retton described the severity of her illness and her stay in intensive care. She said doctors had considered life support. “I am blessed to be here,” she told Kotb, according to the Associated Press. “Because there was a time when they were about to put me on life support.”
Retton was shown using oxygen during the interview and said at the time, “I’m not great yet. I know it’s going to be a really long road.” The interview documented how she was doing then; it was not a forecast of a specific recovery timeline.

May 2024: breathing and speaking remained difficult
Seven months after leaving the hospital, Retton told Entertainment Tonight that she continued to have difficulty breathing and getting enough breath to speak. Good Morning America reported her May 2024 account, including her words: “I still have a hard time breathing and getting breath to speak.” She also said she was using supplemental oxygen and that her breathing difficulties affected her ability to resume speaking work. These details describe her condition as she reported it in May 2024, not a current medical update.
What is—and isn’t—known about her current condition
The latest substantive first-person recovery account identified in the reporting cited here is from May 23, 2024. It does not establish whether Retton still uses oxygen, how her breathing has changed since then, or her medical status as of October 4, 2026. No current prognosis or more specific clinical diagnosis is established by these reports, so it would be inaccurate to present the May 2024 account as her condition today.

Retton is a five-time Olympic medalist who won the all-around gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, becoming the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around title. That achievement is why her health updates drew broad attention, but her recovery remains a personal medical matter.
