Captain America is a mantle, not a name held only by Steve Rogers. In Marvel comics, Isaiah Bradley’s wartime story is set before Rogers’ intended turn in the uniform; later, Bucky Barnes, John Walker and Sam Wilson also take up the role. This is an in-universe comics chronology, with alternate-universe and possible-future versions kept separate. It is not a verified roster of every character across comics, games, animation and film, and the available official histories do not establish an exhaustive, issue-by-issue order for every comics holder.
What “chronological order” means here
The order below refers to when a character held the mantle in Marvel’s fictional history, not when readers first encountered that character. The distinction matters most for Isaiah Bradley: his wartime history was introduced later in the comic series Truth: Red, White & Black (2003), but Marvel’s 2021 account places his role before Steve Rogers’ intended turn as Captain America.
Marvel’s guide to Captain Americas spans Earth-616 and other realities. A single list would therefore mix people who succeed one another in the main continuity with counterparts from alternate worlds or possible futures. The sections below keep those categories distinct.
Main-continuity Captain Americas
| Character | Place in the chronology | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Isaiah Bradley | Wartime history before Steve Rogers’ intended turn | Marvel’s account says Rogers was supposed to wear the uniform, making Isaiah the first Captain America in that story. His history was revealed later in Truth: Red, White & Black (2003). |
| Steve Rogers | The central Captain America whose departures lead to later holders | Rogers is the figure whose apparent death precedes Bucky Barnes’ assumption of the role and whose replacement is described in Marvel’s account of John Walker. |
| Bucky Barnes | After Rogers’ apparent death | Rogers’ former partner assumes the Captain America role following that apparent death. |
| John Walker | A government-selected replacement for Rogers | Walker is appointed as a replacement Captain America and is later associated with the U.S.Agent identity. The official histories cited here do not establish his exact placement relative to Bucky’s tenure. |
| Sam Wilson | A later holder of the shield and title | Marvel’s histories identify Wilson as a later Captain America. They do not provide a single definitive all-holder timeline that fixes every transition. |
Why Isaiah’s position is unusual
Isaiah is a chronological case where story history and publication history diverge. Robyn Belt’s Marvel article, published March 31, 2021, describes Isaiah’s wartime role as preceding Rogers’ intended turn in the star-spangled suit and points readers to Truth: Red, White & Black. That makes Isaiah earlier in the fictional chronology, though the character was introduced decades after the original Captain America stories.

Later successors are not one uninterrupted handoff
Bucky’s and Walker’s claims to the mantle arise from different circumstances: Bucky takes it after Rogers’ apparent death, while Walker is selected as a replacement for Rogers. Both belong in a list of characters who have been Captain America, but the official histories summarized here do not supply a complete sequence of every intervening return, departure or temporary tenure. Sam Wilson is another later holder; this does not make the roster above an exhaustive account of every person who ever carried the shield.
Other characters associated with Captain America
Broader identity records also associate Jeff Mace, William Burnside and Roscoe Simons with the Captain America identity. These names belong in a fuller account of the mantle, but the evidence available here does not establish a reliable issue-by-issue chronological placement for them. They are therefore identified separately rather than inserted into an order that would imply more certainty than the sources support.

Alternate-universe and future versions
Peggy Carter
Marvel’s multiverse guide includes a version of Peggy Carter as Captain America. She is an alternate-world counterpart, not a successor in the Earth-616 sequence above.
Danielle Cage
Danielle Cage becomes Captain America in one possible future. Marvel also notes that she visits the modern Marvel Universe in U.S.Avengers (2017) #2–3. Her future role and that visit do not make her part of the same straightforward succession as Rogers, Bucky, Walker and Wilson.

How to read the chronology without mistaking it for a total
- For fictional chronology: Isaiah’s wartime story comes before Rogers’ intended turn; Bucky follows Rogers’ apparent death; Walker is described as a government-selected replacement; Wilson is a later holder.
- For publication history: Isaiah’s story appeared in Truth: Red, White & Black (2003), long after the wartime period it depicts. Do not confuse that publication date with the character’s place in the story’s chronology.
- For the multiverse: Keep Peggy Carter and Danielle Cage in a separate category from main-continuity mantle holders.
- For a complete count: No definitive total follows from these histories. The official multiverse guide is a selection spanning realities, not an exhaustive all-media census.
Readers looking specifically for Isaiah Bradley’s origin story can start with Truth: Red, White & Black. Marvel’s 2021 article directs readers to Marvel Unlimited for the story; exact print editions and current availability are not established here.
