Marvel Studios screened exclusive footage from Thunderbolts* during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024. The “MCU Suicide Squad” label came from contemporary media comparisons—not Marvel—and describes only the broad idea of a team made up of misfits.
What Thunderbolts* footage was shown at SDCC?
Cast members and director Jake Schreier debuted the first footage at Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel, according to GameSpot’s contemporaneous report. D23’s July 28 recap of Marvel’s Hall H presentation also lists Thunderbolts* among the featured projects.
The screening was exclusive to the event; it was not a public trailer. Reports described the preview, but the available accounts do not establish a complete official transcript or a shot-by-shot record. The footage therefore should be understood through those attributed descriptions, rather than as a clip viewers can watch publicly.
Why was Thunderbolts* compared with Suicide Squad?
GameSpot framed the preview as suggesting that the team “may play like Marvel’s Suicide Squad,” and ComicBook.com also made the comparison while covering fan theories. It was a media shorthand, not an official Marvel genre label.

#1 Best Overall
- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
The limited overlap supported by that framing is a team-up involving misfits. It does not establish that the films share a story, characters, or production approach. Disney’s own event recap promoted Thunderbolts* as an “irreverent team-up” featuring Yelena Belova alongside MCU misfits; that is the studio’s description, not an independent assessment.
What does the asterisk in Thunderbolts* mean?
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the film would clarify the asterisk by the end, but did not explain it before release. ComicBook.com reported him saying: “That is the official title of Thunderbolts* and we won’t talk more about that until after the movie comes out.” The comment confirms the asterisk was intentional; it is not itself a plot reveal.

Where can you watch Thunderbolts* now?
The SDCC-exclusive preview is distinct from the finished film. Disney’s official Thunderbolts* page lists the film as available to own on Blu-ray. Availability and editions can vary by territory, so check the current local retailer listing.
