Kalki 2898 AD brings a dystopian future into contact with Hindu myth, especially the Mahabharata, while director Nag Ashwin has openly acknowledged Star Wars as an influence on his imagination. The RRR comparison is best understood as a way to describe the film’s grand, action-driven scale—not as a confirmed creative influence. The result is a science-fiction story built around mythic characters and a world with its own rules.
What is Kalki 2898 AD about?
The story takes place in 2898 AD, in a post-apocalyptic world where nature has vanished and darkness prevails. Its premise joins a future incarnation of Vishnu, Kalki, to a struggle involving Bhairava, the pregnant SU-M80, the cursed warrior Ashwatthama and Supreme Yaskin. Amazon’s 2024 platform announcement describes Kalki as a modern-day avatar of Vishnu and identifies Prabhas as Bhairava, a bounty hunter. Amazon’s announcement also lists Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani among the cast.
The film’s settings include Kashi, the Complex and Shambala. These places give the story a route through distinct forms of life in its future: from the crowded, harsh world of Kashi to the elite Complex and the refuge of Shambala. In an Indian Express interview published July 26, 2024, Ashwin described Ashwatthama as a cursed warrior trying to protect SU-M80, who is carrying Kalki.
How much did Star Wars influence the film?
More than a visual resemblance noticed by viewers: Ashwin has directly said Star Wars influenced him growing up. “Star Wars definitely was a huge influence on me growing up,” he told India Today on July 6, 2024. He also described his attraction to fictional worlds that establish their own rules, a useful way to understand why Kalki 2898 AD builds a distinctive future rather than simply staging a contemporary story with futuristic props.
The comparison also has visible reference points. In the Indian Express interview, Ashwin responded to comparisons between the helmeted Soldiers of the Supreme and Star Wars stormtroopers, and between the vehicle Bujji and BB-8. He said, “We designed everything on our own with our concept team.” He also said he loves Star Wars and sees no problem in acknowledging that admiration. Those comments support calling Star Wars an influence and a point of comparison; they do not establish that the film copied those designs.
What does the film draw from Hindu mythology?
The mythological frame is not decorative background. Kalki is associated with Vishnu in the film’s premise, and the story brings Ashwatthama—known from the Mahabharata—into a speculative future. Ashwin has said that Mahabharata stories and earlier mythological films inspired him. The film therefore uses myth as part of its story engine: ancient figures, curses and expectations meet a future shaped by science-fiction conventions.
Ashwin also described the film as a way to spark conversation about the epic, including debates such as who was the greater warrior, Arjun or Karna. “More than finding answers, it is about discussing and learning about our mythology,” he told The Indian Express on July 26, 2024. That is a useful distinction: the point, in his account, is not to turn an old debate into a definitive verdict, but to give a new generation an entry point into the stories.
Where does the RRR comparison fit?
RRR is a tonal and scale comparison, not a verified influence on Kalki 2898 AD. The material available does not establish that Ashwin cited RRR as a creative source or that the films share a direct production connection. The more defensible comparison is that both invite audiences to expect heightened, large-scale Indian storytelling, while Kalki 2898 AD distinguishes itself through its science-fiction future and explicit mythological framework.

The strongest evidence for Kalki’s specific recipe comes from Ashwin’s own statements about Star Wars and mythology, rather than from a claim that the film follows RRR.
Why was a sequel planned?
In 2024, Ashwin said he initially hoped to tell the story in one film. He later concluded that the four major characters’ backstories and the action required more room, leaving important material for a second part. He also said the sequel would introduce new worlds and characters. These are his comments from July 2024, not confirmation of a present-day production schedule or release date.
Rank #4
The sequel plan follows from the film’s many intersecting threads: the future Kalki, Bhairava, SU-M80 and Ashwatthama each have a place in the larger story. Ashwin also acknowledged SU-M80’s importance and said he was trying to make the film accessible to children. The sequel was presented as a way to continue developing its characters and world, rather than as a release-date promise.
